Chapter 29Using the same tunnels they’d walked through to leave the city, Montreal kept his gaze on the growing light up ahead. Once we reach that exit, I have to walk unaided. The pain’s there, but manageable. I only hope we don’t have to divert too much back to our quarters.
“Are you ready to walk unaided, Montreal?” Aaron’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“I was already thinking about it. Don’t worry about me.” Montreal looked at Aaron and smiled. “I know you will, but I’ll be fine.”
“Yes. To both.”
That Aaron voiced their growing affection in little ways warmed Montreal and made him even more determined to get back to Jeroboam without giving away he’d been hurt. As they hesitated at the edge of the tunnel, waiting for Juniper to let them know it was safe, Montreal gently removed
