Chapter 30His eyes snapping open, Thoth jerked into a sitting position. I thought I heard something. Looking around him, Thoth saw only the mechanical from Montreal’s spacecraft. Its head was moving in a slow one hundred and eighty degrees. “Hello,” Thoth called, but it wasn’t a human voice that replied. “They returned to the city. I am Custos. Your guardian. Juniper left this for you.” The automaton didn’t leave its post, but held up a slip of paper. “I see. Thank you, Custos.” Thoth rose slowly and took the note. Reading it, he felt the love with which Juniper had infused it. “Come back safe, my beloved.” Thoth whispered the words into the forest. As soon as he’s back, we need to plan our return to the city so I can get into Tesseract. I don’t know how long he’ll take to fully charge
