"Why now?" I asked myself, looking at my mother holding a jersey. I knew surely that a lot of weird ideas must have been running through her head. Tell me, who forces a young adult? She must be up to no good, I thought. What did she mean by, "Go and have some fun on the field"? I was already having a hard time. Why the field?
"Kiddo, look," She paused and looked at my frowned face, "You have to meet new friends." My mum said with her humble glare that was as calming as sunset. She held her broom firmly in her left hand while she tried to pass the jersey to me.
"Mum, you do not have to trouble yourself with this," I scratched my head to ease the trouble of saying what was on my mind. "I can find myself there if I want, but not today," I looked straight into her face. I wanted to be sure if I had said the right words. Some words might hit the nail on the head, you know?
"Sweetheart, please," Her eyes brightened optimistically, "Just for me." her plea persisted.
"But..." I was short of words. She gave me the jersey, even though I hesitated. She smiled at me and it melted my heart. I could feel something like her hope rested on me. I dared not let her down.
I went to my room to put on the jersey. The jersey shorts clung to me as I used to use it during puberty. The shorts were short and rested on my lap. My butt tried to free itself from the hold. I didn't bother, but came outside. I kinda love the cloth like that.
"You can stay and go another day," she said after studying me for minutes. "I will buy you a new and fitting one," she added and continued cleaning the room.
"I'm off, Mum," I smiled and dashed to the door, with a bottle of water and a towel resting on my neck.
"Where are you going to?"
"To the field, of course!" I paused and turned to her. "It is your idea after all."
"But the..."
"It is very fitting!" I went to her and kissedđ her forehead. I couldn't spare another minute. I dashed off and slammed the door closed behind me. I knew that she meant well for me.
As I was about to get to the field, I could not withhold the butterflies in my belly. Somehow, my heart sank. I sat down and watched the passersby. The moment was worth it, but I didn't think I was strong enough to go to the field. My fear increased!
I looked at the sun and smiled. That very same sun had so much power to light the whole world, but it couldn't save me that day. I remembered that it had always been there. "The sun has done its part by giving us strength. Ours is to strengthen ourselves," I recited. I looked closely at the field and stood upright. I could face it.
I ran to the empty field. I always thought that I would find a crowd, but I didn't see anybody. I looked around and thought: âWhy did I come here?â Not a single soul!
"Someone came after all." A voice pulled me out of my loneliness. It had perfected the job of sending fear into me.
I turned around to see a towering guy. His face was calm and he seemed to be my age. "You came to the field?" I asked blatantly because I didn't know what to say.
"You kinda look silly-cute in these clothes." He said, rubbing the back of his neck and grinning. Then I noticed something: he had a strong, muscular physique. Apart from that, he had long, curly, brown hair and his face was feminine-pretty. In fact, rather prettier! His tanned skin shone like a bronze medal in the sun, making his green eyes look like two jade gems stuck on it.
"I do?" I said blatantly. âWhat a silly reply again?â I lamented to myself rhetorically. "You too, you look unnatural. Are those surgical?" I looked at his pretty handsome face. His white teeth looked like silver glued to ruby. His face was just a perfected one.
"I took after my mum," He smiled at me after replying.
I couldn't believe it, I was holding a conversation. Everything felt normal. It made me remember the former me.
"You too, you look like a plastic doll," He continued by complimenting me back.
"Actually, I took after my dad," I frowned. I just wanted to forget about him, when he divorced my mum. That stupid man!
"O...kay?!" He said as he read my expression. "Okay." He said again. Maybe he was trying to kill his curiosity. "Want to grab the ball?" He asked.
"Yes, I do." I picked up the ball. I felt a melody within my soul. Did I just pick up a ball? I couldn't believe it.
"Pass it to me." He said.
"Yeah." I passed the ball to him. He took the ball and threw it into the net. "Wow!" My mouth fell open. What a talent?! "You could play?" I asked the obvious.
"Yes, he was a f*****g international player." A voice told me from behind. He was walking towards us and he had this cold and cool face.
