' You left me. After all the things you said and everything we did. You made it look so damn easy to leave'
*laughs*
'You almost convinced me I mattered'
**Point of View of Evelyn**
"Hey, Evelyn, can you please go and attend that table? Thank you," Oliver said.
I smiled and walked to the table. Oliver is the owner of this diner and he is a really sweet and friendly guy. So is Lily, his wife. They are in their 40s and don't have any children. So they helped my orphanage a lot and when they heard that I was looking for a job they instantly took me in.
I am working at a diner right now. If I put it short, I am an orphan and tomorrow is my 18th birthday. Because of this, I need to move out of the orphanage, so I started working here a month ago, certainly for money. The owner is nice and I like this place very much, making it so much easier to work here.
I don't need to worry about a place to live since I will be in my dorm. I applied for a scholarship at a university and a big one might I add. The university only gives five scholarships per year and it's really hard to get in. The university is only for people who are born with a diamond spoon in their mouths. They are going to pay for all the things that I need like stationary, dorm fees, and my food, and they even gave me a Mackbook and phone.
To be frank, I didn't really need to stay in the orphanage, but I did it because I wanted to, or more like I had to. Three years ago, I was roaming the streets with a fogged mind, thinking about different things, wearing thin clothes under the heavy pour like the sky was crying her heart out, but I didn't really mind. I just wanted some quiet and alone time to think and cool my mind and that's when I first met Rose.
Rose Ballard, the owner of the orphanage I am in right now. She is a really beautiful woman with red hair touching her hips and brown, almost red, eyes. She has a round face with chubby cheeks and is shorter than me and I am 5'4. Can you believe it? It just makes everyone want to protect her, but that is not the reason that I stayed with them, but because of the way she treated me pleased my heart to the point that I personally stayed in the orphanage to take care of her and the children.
After seeing me walking aimlessly around the street with such thin clothes and in a chilly winter at that, she instantly ran to me without thinking much about it, she was even barefoot with just a big umbrella in the hope of sheltering me from rain. At that time, I was actually confused for the first time in a while, looking at her worried face which didn't make sense at all.
I wanted to know what she was thinking so I followed her back to her mansion, which I later found out to be an orphanage. She gave me a change of clothes and sat me near the fireplace where all the other children surrounded me. I was wrapped in layers of blanket and soon had a bowl of warm soup in my hand, just like the rest of the children. The soup was hardly enough to fill one's stomach, let alone a growing child.
I spoke for the first time and asked Rose why they were eating so little and she answered that she was short of funds. At that time, I thought that they were such fools to take me in even though they were short of food and all. I took a sip of the soup and it was warmer and tastier than any I had eaten. Looking at my expression, other children asked me if it was good and if Rose makes the best food.
I thought that they were really a fool to be this happy to share their food with another person even though they were hungry, but the soup was so warm that even my heart felt the warmth. They are really idiots but also very pure and kindhearted. I believed that they wouldn't be able to survive long like this, so I decided to pay back for the soup.
I asked Rose for her phone and messaged someone I know to donate money to the orphanage and just when I was about to finish my meal, Rose got the message about the donation, but because it was such a large sum of money, she didn't at first believe it and even thought that it was some sort of trap causing her instantly returning the money.
Because the amount was returned, the person sent the money again through different accounts and in small amounts, but it was still strange for Rose. She didn't want to endanger herself and the children, so she once again returned the money. After that, she came with the homemade cake she baked and distributed it equally to everyone and that was the first time I had eaten such a delicious cake, instantly making me fall in love with sweet things.
After eating the cake, Rose asked about my parents, family, or guardian but I didn't answer her as I didn't have any. At that time, she offered me to stay with them and she smiled gently at me as the children became so excited. At that time, I started feeling something after a long time, the feeling of desire, the feeling of wanting to protect them, so that is what I did. I decided to stay with them and protect them.
I also don't have to work to earn money, I have more than enough money, which keeps growing, but the thing is, it would be strange if an orphan who doesn't have any guardians for the past three years and has been living in an orphanage suddenly had so much money, right? And I am one of those who prefer to avoid creating any trouble instead of dealing with them later. To tell the truth, I have taken a liking to the lifestyle I am currently living in.
As for the university, I could have easily gotten in without even taking any exams, but it was a piece of cake for me to clear the exam and avoid any suspicion so I just did that, as for why I chose that university................... I have my own reasons.
I looked at the table and saw a family of three sitting where I needed to take orders. Women, men, and a small girl who is crying her eyes out. Why is she crying like that? I walked to them with my notepad in my hand as I saw her parents trying to calm her and coax her. After reaching in front of the table, I just stood there watching them as they tried to stop her tears. I thought of something and fished through my pocket to pull out a lollipop that I always keep with me. I extend my hand toward the small girl as she looks at the lollipop with her big and watery eyes.
"Do you want it?" I ask in a soft voice and she nods eagerly. I smiled and passed the lollipop to her, crouching down to her eyes
level.
"Now tell me why were you crying?" I asked her.
"I fell but my prince didn't come to save me and mom told me that I also have a prince who will come to save me when I get hurt. I fell and I got hurt but..." she started crying again. Oh boy, I feel like she can fill up a whole tub with her tears.
"Well, do you know why he didn't come?" I said in a soft voice and she shook her head, negatively.
"It's because of you. No one will help you if you can't help yourself even a little, my dear. Others only help those who put effort in and don't depend on others for everything. Now be a brave princess that everyone likes and stop crying. OKAY?" I said, smiling gently, and she nodded, giggling.
"Okay," She giggled.
"That's my girl. Now, what would you all like to have?" I asked her parents.
They gave me their order and thanked me. I smiled and walked back to get their orders. I gave them their food and waved to the little girl who was giggling with her father. I look at them with craving, desire, jealousy, and affection in my eyes. They look so happy. It's like they don't care what's happening to the world. They are living in their own small world full of love and nothing else. I wonder what it is like in that world.
"EVELYN" someone shouts my name.
"Ahhhh yes, yes I am here," I said, putting my hand on my chest as I jumped in surprise.
"Are you alright? I have been calling you for a while and your face doesn't look good", Oliver asked, all worried as he left whatever he was doing and walked to me.
"OH, No, Oliver, I am perfectly fine," I said, assuring him that I am fine.
"But you...." I cut him off mid-sentence.
"I am fine Oliver. I am gonna go and attend another table", I said to him and, began walking to a new table before Oliver could say anything.
Four people are sitting there. All are dressed in black and white but they are all giving different vibes, but, I didn't bother to scan them, minding my own business. I can only see three of them as the fourth one's back is facing me. He has jet-black hair, those silky threads look really tempting to touch, they are short but long enough for you to hold them, broad shoulders, and he seems big and tall, that's for sure.
"Welcome. My name is Evelyn and I will be your waitress for today. What can I get for you all?" I asked, gaining all of their attention. I was smiling at first but I stopped breathing after the fourth person turned towards me, making my eyes wide.
"Noah.....?" I said in shock. Everyone at the table turned to Noah as he looked at me in puzzlement.
Even if he is sitting right now, he still looks tall and big with his build. He is wearing a black leather jacket with a white shirt paired with washed blue jeans. His raven hair is messy but suits him just like that time. He has grown so much but his sharp monolid silver eyes have not changed a bit. His Greek shaped nose paired with his jawline makes anyone's head turn instead of the little round, chubby and childlike face that I remember.
"Do you know me?" Noah questions.
"No, No, of course, you know me. Are you one of my fans?" He questions and I shake my head negatively, rejecting it.
"Don't tell me she is one of your one-night stands. Have you slept with her before?" One of his friends asked.
I knew the fact that he is a playboy, but hearing it from his friends only makes it hurt more. Noah told me, he vowed that he would only love me, but he is doing all of this, sleeping around, changing partners like clothes. Why? But yet again, I should never have believed his words, it was my fault to be fooled by words like that again, and I never learned my lesson before that, but now I know, know it so well that I will never forget it. It has been carved into my bones.
"What's your name?" He inquired.
"Evelyn," I said, hoping for a surprised expression, but all he did is smirk.
"OK, so Evelyn. I know for sure that I have never met you before because if I had, I wouldn't have forgotten this beautiful face of yours. It's our first meeting, but believe me, I will make sure that it will not be our last. You are......"
"You don't remember?" I asked in a small voice, but enough for them to hear. They all look at Noah with confused looks, as Noah looks at me the same way.
"Remember what?" He said with confusion clearly written on his face.
He doesn't remember me. I want to shout, scream, yell, ask him......... question him, and most of all.......... laugh, laugh at me for believing in his words, but then again I was too small and naive at that time to even understand.
"Bro, are you sure that you have never met her? It seems like you have and I guess you have also tricked her into your bed because her expression tells me that you have. She seems pretty heartbroken. Don't tell me you took advantage of an innocent girl. Boy, we never do that, you know, and......." the rest was cut off as Noah hit his head.
"I know, blockhead, but I have never met her before". Noah confirmed to them that he had never seen me and to me that even my name wasn't worth any space in his memory.
So, he really doesn't remember, he doesn't remember. He doesn't remember me? This time I laughed, but a humorless laugh. I am such a fool. I thought that maybe he would at least remember me, but no, he always f*****g proves me wrong.
But then again, what was I expecting after all these years? I should have known, I should have known, I should have known, but I thought maybe, just maybe, there was always a small hope in my heart that maybe, just maybe a little, but now it's crushed. I'm so f*****g stupid, but then again, I am only stupid for him.
"What?" Noah asked.
"Nothing," I said, smiling.
"No, what..." he was cut off by the ringing of his cell.
He pulls out his phone from his pocket to look at the screen and raised his hand showing a finger towards me, asking for a minute. I want to walk away but I haven't taken their order yet. Should I just walk away? I don't want to front him anymore. I won't be the one to bring their food, I will just ask Lily to give them their order. Noah's facial expression changed into a serious one as he listened to the other side of the call. After a while, he puts the phone back into his pocket.
"We need to go," he tells the others in a firm voice and they nod.
They all stand up and leave, except Noah. He stands from his chair and walks closer to me, making me freeze in my place. I want to walk away, I really do, but the way he is looking at me tells me to stay. He stops really close to me, like right in front of me. First, he looks at my eyes, and then his eyes slowly slide down to my lips.
He is in my personal space and I don't like it, but I also don't hate it either. It doesn't make sense, but it's just like that. He leans toward me, making me bend my upper body backward. He is really tall, I mean look at him. He is at least 6'4 or something. I feel like I am a child in front of him just like before.
He wraps his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him, and leans more so now his lips are brushing against my ear. I really want to step back but my legs wouldn't move. My body has always been like this. It never disobeys him no matter what. Now and then, too.
"You are my bunny, remember that. I will come back for you" he says before nipping my ear lightly.
I gasped and stepped back this time as my body finally broke out of his spell. But my cheeks are getting hotter and I think my face is all red now. I shake my head in the hopes of getting my face to stop blushing. No, don't, don't....don't blush damn it. Noah smirked at my reaction as he straightened his body.
Without saying anything else, he turns and walks to the door. I looked at his back, watching him walk away again, leaving me again, but what am I thinking? He never meant all those things. Before stepping out of the diner, Noah turned back and looked at me for one last time.
'Mine' he mouthed, which gave goosebumps to my whole body. He smirks again and leaves the diner as I stand there for a while looking at the blank space just like my mind. Someone taps my shoulder, making me look back, only to see Lily with a worried expression.
"Are you alright Eve?" She asks in a soft voice like she is scared.
I didn't reply and made a run to the staff's room. I burst open the door and slammed the door shut as soon as I stepped in. I leaned my back against the door and ran my fingers through my long curly black hair.
I started laughing like crazy at myself. My hand turned into a fist as I pulled my hair. He doesn't remember all those things we did together. He doesn't remember all that time when he made me laugh like no other. He doesn't remember his promises, but most of all
He doesn't remember me.
I slid down the door and I didn't even realize that I was crying even before Lily came to me. I started crying when he left again and the tears never stopped, they are still dripping down my cheeks.
If he was just going to leave and not even remember me, then he shouldn't have approached me before, he shouldn't have reached out to help me, he shouldn't have made me feel that way, he should have just left me there crying, he should have let me get eaten by those monsters.
He shouldn't have given me hope if he was going to forget all that and me.
Why is he the one to forget? It would have been me........it should have been me. It hurts.......... it hurt. Why does he get to forget when I have to remember everything? Why do I have to be like this? Why does it hurt so much even after so many years?
Why do I still love him?
