Chapter 1 My Mate my Nightmare
Elena's POV
Before that night, my life was almost perfect. I grew up feeling safe and loved by my family.
I was set to be the team’s athletic trainer. Everyone knew it. I had the skills and the passion for it. I dreamed of helping our hockey team and building a life with my destined mate.
On my eighteenth birthday, I felt my wolf for the first time. I was in the training room, cleaning the treatment table when my step-sister Tessa burst in.
“Happy birthday, Elena!” she squealed. “Drop everything. You’re coming with us tonight.”
I blinked at her. “Going where?”
She grinned, her eyes sparkling. “A party! The Moonshine Wolves are celebrating the pre-season, and we’re celebrating your birthday.”
I laughed softly. “Tessa, you know I don’t like parties.”
“It’s your eighteenth birthday. You should have some fun!” she said, grabbing my hand.
Before I could say no, two more friends, Nolan and Cole, appeared, both smiling. “Happy birthday, Elena!” they said together.
“What are you planning?” I asked, looking at them.
Cole linked his arm with mine. “Celebrating you, of course.”
Tessa leaned in, practically buzzing with excitement. “You might meet your mate tonight.”
My heart skipped a beat. Finding your mate is every werewolf's dream, and I had just turned eighteen. My heart raced, and I felt my wolf stir at the mention of a mate.
“There’ll be a lot of people. Tonight is when young wolves from the team find their mates.”
I swallowed hard.
I had tried not to think about my mate. The idea of being connected to someone I might not even know was both exciting and scary.
“What if I don’t meet him?” I asked quietly.
Nolan shrugged. “Then you still get cake, music, and fun with us.”
They all looked at me expectantly, and I finally agreed. I went back to my room and changed into a soft blue dress Tessa had picked out for me.
I joined them, looking my best, and they were right. The party was a blast, and I got lost in the fun.
All around me, young wolves were finding their mates while I stood with my friends, wondering what it would be like to meet mine.
The music thumped in the rink-side lounge. Lanterns swayed from the hockey banners, casting flickering shadows on the dancing crowd.
Tessa pulled me out to the dance floor, while Nolan and Cole danced nearby, laughing and holding cups of fruit punch. I took a sip from my cup, scanning the crowd.
Then I felt it.
A sudden pressure in the air. It felt like a pull from deep inside me. At first, it was subtle, then it became clear. My wolf stirred restlessly. I froze.
“Elena…”
The voice was low and familiar, making my stomach tighten. I turned around.
Damon Steele, the star defenseman and my stepbrother, stood just a few feet away, his eyes locked on me. He stepped closer, and I felt the pull again, stronger this time, like an invisible thread pulling me toward him. My heart raced as I realized something.
He stopped right in front of me and tilted his head slightly, sniffing the air around me.
“You’re my mate,” he murmured.
My wolf screamed inside me with recognition, and a rush of heat flooded through me.
Mate.
The word hit me like fire, and my hands shook. My chest felt like it might burst. He was my mate, my stepbrother. I looked around for my friends and only saw Tessa.
Tessa.
When she saw me looking at her, her smile faltered for a moment, but I noticed. I saw a dark flash in her eyes when she looked at Damon and me with curiosity.
She knew.
Damon’s gaze was locked on mine, and the pull between us felt electric. My knees went weak, and heat rushed through my body.
“You…” I whispered, barely able to speak. “You’re… my mate.”
Warmth surged through me, and my wolf leapt with excitement.
I couldn’t look away from him. Damon’s hand hovered near mine, and my wolf howled softly, urging me closer.
Suddenly, Tessa stepped between us and laughed softly. “Sorry to interrupt, but come join the others.” She pulled me toward the dance floor.
I spent the rest of the evening having fun with my friends and lost track of time. I didn’t even know when I fell asleep.
The next morning, I woke up to a nightmare. My eyes opened to a horrifying scene.
Before I realized what was wrong, I smelled something off. A strong metallic scent filled the air, and I thought something had spilled.
Then I realized I wasn’t in my room. Panic shot up my spine as I sat up. The bed was unfamiliar, larger than mine, and the sheets were twisted. Then I saw the body beside me. My heart raced, each beat louder than the last.
He lay there, unmoving, his skin pale, his chest still. For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
I stared, frozen, at the lifeless body next to me. My heart raced as I looked at the blood staining the sheets, dark red and soaking into the bed, showing that he had been like this for a while.
I looked down at my clothes. They were stained too. My breath hitched as I moved back slowly, a broken sound escaping my throat.
“No,” I whispered. “No, no, no…”
I scrambled backward, nearly falling off the bed, my hands shaking so much I could barely hold myself up. My wolf stirred beneath my skin, confused and scared, mirroring my panic.
As I moved back, I tried to figure out who he was. I didn’t know him, but he felt oddly familiar. Even in death, he had a powerful presence. He was pale, with sharp features, dark hair, and a strong gaze.
I needed to figure out what was happening. How could I explain that I didn’t know what happened? My heart pounded, and suddenly his face triggered a memory.
“No… how? How is this possible?” My jaw dropped, and I covered my mouth in shock.
This was Captain Kade Moonshine.
The realization hit me like a punch. My stomach twisted, and I felt sick.
He was powerful, a billionaire hockey legend, and now he was dead beside me.
Nothing made sense, so I searched my mind, trying to remember the hours before I fell asleep. I had been so tired from my birthday celebration, and I didn’t remember running into this man dead in my bed.
“I didn’t do this,” I said aloud, my voice shaking. I needed to convince myself I had no part in this. “I didn’t… I don’t even know how I got here.”
I had to get out. I looked at the blood on my hands and tried to wipe it off while searching for my shoes. If anyone found out I was involved in Captain Kade’s death, nothing I said would matter.
I staggered to my feet, ignoring the sticky feeling on my hands, and took a step toward the door.
As I touched the handle, I heard footsteps outside, and suddenly the door burst open.
“What’s going on here? Who are you?” the person who kicked the door open demanded, followed by others rushing into the room.
