Chapter one First day bigger secret
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
Maya’s friend, Tasha, asked, her eyes wide.
Maya looked at her reflection in the mirror one more time, then nodded.
“I’m sure,” Maya said. “I need this job.”
Tasha sighed. “But the company is huge. And the CEO is… scary.”
Maya smiled. “I know. But I can’t keep waiting for a miracle. I have to start somewhere.”
Tasha shook her head. “Just don’t let them scare you.”
Maya picked up her bag and walked out the door.
The morning air was cool and calm. But Maya’s heart was loud.
She had waited for this day for months. She had sent her CV to so many places and gotten no replies. When she finally got an interview at Blackstone Enterprises, she didn’t believe it was real.
Now she was standing in front of the building—one of the tallest in the city.
It looked like a glass mountain.
Maya swallowed and stepped inside.
---
Inside, the lobby was quiet and expensive.
A huge chandelier hung from the ceiling, shining like stars.
A man in a suit stood behind the reception desk, staring at her.
He looked like he didn’t care about anything.
Maya walked up and cleared her throat.
“Good morning. I’m here for the HR interview,” she said.
The man didn’t smile. He checked his computer, then nodded.
“Take a seat,” he said. “They will call you.”
Maya sat down. Her hands were shaking.
She tried to calm herself by thinking of her mother’s voice.
“Just do your best.”
After a few minutes, a woman in a smart skirt walked out.
“Maya Okafor?” she asked.
Maya stood quickly. “Yes, ma’am.”
“I’m Ms. Adesuwa. HR. Follow me.”
Maya followed her through long hallways. The walls were decorated with awards and photos of big events.
Everything felt so expensive.
They entered a room with a large table.
Ms. Adesuwa sat down, opened a file, and looked at Maya.
“You’re early,” she said.
Maya nodded. “I’m sorry. I just… I didn’t want to be late.”
Ms. Adesuwa’s eyes softened for a second.
“Good,” she said. “We like punctual people.”
Maya smiled.
Ms. Adesuwa cleared her throat. “Maya, we have a vacancy for a personal assistant. It is a demanding role. You will work directly under the CEO.”
Maya’s heart stopped.
“Under the CEO?” she repeated.
Ms. Adesuwa nodded.
Maya tried to hide her excitement and fear.
She had heard stories about the CEO.
People said he was strict, cold, and never smiled. Some said he fired people for small mistakes.
Maya swallowed.
“I can do it,” she said quietly.
Ms. Adesuwa leaned forward.
“Listen carefully,” she said. “This job is not just about taking notes and answering calls. You will see things you should not see. You will hear things you should not hear. You must be loyal. And you must be silent.”
Maya’s mouth went dry.
“Yes, ma’am,” she said.
Ms. Adesuwa looked at her for a long moment.
“Do you understand?” she asked.
Maya nodded.
Ms. Adesuwa stood up. “Good. We will start your training tomorrow. Today, you will meet the CEO.”
Maya’s eyes widened.
“Today?” she whispered.
Ms. Adesuwa smiled for the first time.
“Yes,” she said. “He is expecting you.”
---
Maya left the room and walked toward the elevator.
Her mind was racing.
Meet the CEO today?
Why would he meet me?
She tried to calm herself.
Maybe it was just a quick introduction.
Maybe he would not even speak to her.
Maybe…
But when the elevator doors opened on the top floor, Maya’s heart jumped.
The hallway was darker than the others.
It felt like she was entering a different world.
She followed the signs that said CEO OFFICE.
When she reached the door, her hands were sweating.
She stood in front of it for a moment, then knocked.
A voice from inside said, “Come in.”
Maya opened the door.
The office was huge. The windows showed the city like a small toy.
A man sat behind a desk.
He was tall, wearing a black suit. His hair was neatly cut. His face looked calm but sharp—like a knife.
He looked up.
His eyes were dark and deep.
He did not smile.
Maya’s body froze.
This was the CEO.
Adrian Black.
She had seen his picture online, but seeing him in real life was different. He looked even colder.
He spoke without emotion.
“You must be Maya Okafor,” he said.
“Yes, sir,” Maya replied.
He leaned back in his chair.
“Sit,” he said.
Maya sat slowly.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then he asked, “Why do you want this job?”
Maya took a breath.
“I want to build my future,” she said. “I want to work hard and prove myself. I want to help the company grow.”
Adrian studied her.
“Do you know what this job means?” he asked.
Maya nodded.
“It means long hours. It means stress. It means you will always be available.”
Adrian’s voice was calm but cold.
Maya swallowed.
“Yes, sir,” she said.
He stared at her for a moment.
Then he asked, “Do you have any family responsibilities? Anything that will distract you?”
Maya’s heart pounded.
She thought about her mother, who was sick and needed money for treatment.
She thought about her little brother who depended on her.
She thought about her dreams.
She did not want to cry.
“No, sir,” she said. “I can handle it.”
Adrian’s eyes moved quickly across her face.
Then he stood up.
He walked around his desk slowly.
Maya’s stomach tightened.
He stopped in front of her.
“You will start tomorrow,” he said.
Maya tried to smile.
“Thank you, sir,” she said.
Adrian looked at her for a second longer.
Then he said, “One more thing.”
Maya’s heart dropped.
“What is it?” she asked.
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“You will not talk about this job with anyone,” he said.
Maya nodded quickly.
Adrian continued, “You will not tell anyone what you see here. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir,” Maya said.
He turned away and sat back down.
“Good,” he said. “You may leave.”
Maya stood up and walked out.
She felt like she had just escaped a storm.
---
Back in the hallway, Maya breathed deeply.
She felt proud.
She also felt scared.
She knew she had stepped into something bigger than herself.
When she reached the elevator, she pressed the button and waited.
The doors opened.
A woman stepped in.
She smiled at Maya.
“Congratulations,” she said. “You got the job.”
Maya smiled back.
“Thank you,” she said.
The woman’s eyes were sharp.
“Be careful,” she said. “He is not like other bosses.”
Maya’s smile faded.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
The woman shrugged.
“Just… be careful,” she said.
The elevator doors closed.
Maya stood there, thinking.
She knew one thing:
This job would change her life.
And not in a small way.
---
That night, Maya sat on her bed and stared at her phone.
She remembered Adrian’s eyes.
He looked like he didn’t trust anyone.
But why did he care enough to meet her personally?
She didn’t know.
But she was sure of one thing:
Her life was about to become dangerous… and exciting.
She whispered to herself, “Tomorrow, I start a new chapter.”
And she felt a strange excitement inside her.
Like a secret waiting to be discovered.
