Chapter 1 The Girl Who Ran The dress weighed more than Leah thought a dress should. Layers of ivory satin spilled around her feet as two women fussed over the hem, tugging here, smoothing there, pinning lace into place with practiced hands. They spoke in hushed voices, complimenting the craftsmanship, discussing alterations, never once asking the bride whether she wanted to wear it. Because they already knew the answer. Leah stared at herself in the full-length mirror. She looked beautiful. She looked trapped. A diamond necklace rested against her collarbone, heavy enough to remind her that nothing she wore today truly belonged to her—not the dress, not the jewels, not even her future. Behind her, the bedroom door opened. Her father entered without knocking. Richard Bennett was the kind of man whose presence silenced every room he walked into. Tailored suit. Silver cufflinks. Perfect posture. Even at fifty-eight, there wasn't a strand of hair out of place. The seamstresses lowered their heads and quietly excused themselves. The door clicked shut. Neither of them spoke. Richard studied his daughter through the mirror. "You'll make a beautiful Moretti bride." Leah's jaw tightened. "I'd rather die." The words hung in the air. Her father didn't flinch. "You don't mean that." "I do." He sighed as though she were being unreasonable. "You've always been emotional." "And you've always mistaken control for love." For the first time, something flickered across his face. Annoyance. It disappeared almost instantly. "The coracts are ready to be signed." "I never signed anything." "You won't have to." Leah turned to face him. "I've never even met Luca Moretti." "You don't need to." "I'm supposed to marry a stranger." "You're supposed to save this family." She laughed. It wasn't amused. It was the kind of laugh people made right before they cried. "No," she whispered. "I'm supposed to save your company." Richard's silence confirmed everything. Months ago, Bennett Holdings had begun collapsing under impossible debt. Investors pulled out. Banks refused extensions. Competitors circled like vultures. Then came the offer. The Moretti family would erase every debt. A merger. Mr. Bennett didn't like the idea at first but it was better than letting a company he worked for crumble. In return... Leah. Becoming inlaws would made the merger more solid as Richard could still have total control over his company. She felt sick. "I am your daughter." "And because you're my daughter, you have a responsibility." "No." Her voice cracked. "Your responsibility was protecting me." His expression hardened. "This conversation is over." "It hasn't even started." He walked toward the door. "If you leave this house before the wedding..." He paused. "...don't come back." The door closed behind him. Leah stood motionless. Then she ripped the necklace from her throat. The diamonds scattered across the polished floor. --- By midnight, the mansion slept. Security lights glowed across the sprawling estate. Leah stood in her bedroom wearing jeans, a gray hoodie, and sneakers. The wedding dress was gone. Folded neatly across the bed. She picked up a single photograph from her bedside table. Her mother. Smiling. Gone for six years now. Leah traced the edge of the frame. "I'm sorry." She wasn't sure whether she was apologizing for leaving... Or for staying as long as she had. She slipped the photograph into her backpack. Then she climbed out the window. --- The climb wasn't graceful. Her foot slipped once. She scraped her palm against the stone wall. For one terrifying second, she thought she'd fall. Instead, she landed hard in the flowerbed below. Mud stained her jeans. She didn't care. She looked back only once. The Bennett estate stretched behind her like a palace. Beautiful. Cold. A prison disguised as luxury. She adjusted her backpack and started running. --- The bus station smelled of diesel fuel and cheap coffee. Perfect. No one here cared who she was. She pulled the hood over her head and joined the short queue at the ticket counter. "Destination?" Leah hesitated. She hadn't planned this far. The clerk frowned impatiently. "Miss?" She glanced at a faded travel poster taped behind him. Golden sand. Blue water. A tiny beach town she'd never heard of. "Seabrook." The clerk printed the ticket. "One way?" She swallowed. "Yes." --- The journey lasted eight hours. For the first time in years, Leah watched the sunrise without tinted limousine windows between her and the world. Mountains gave way to forests. Forests opened into endless coastline. The sea glittered beneath the morning light. Something inside her loosened. Maybe... Just maybe... She'd made it. --- Seabrook was nothing like the city. People smiled at strangers. Children rode bicycles without bodyguards following them. The air smelled of salt instead of expensive perfume. Leah stepped off the bus carrying everything she owned in one backpack. She had no plan. No job. No home. Just freedom. It was enough. For now. She wandered through the sleepy streets until she reached the beach. The waves rolled lazily toward the shore. A group of surfers laughed as they carried their boards toward the water. One of them caught her attention. Tall. Sun-kissed skin. Dark hair tousled by the ocean breeze. He balanced a surfboard under one arm while helping a little girl zip up her life jacket. "You're scared?" he asked gently. The girl nodded. He smiled. "So was I." "You were?" "Terrified." She giggled. "But you're really good." "I only got good because I fell a hundred times." The little girl looked uncertain. "What if I fall?" He shrugged. "I'll be there." Something about the way he said it made Leah smile before she even realized she was smiling. The little girl finally nodded. He ruffled her hair. "That's my brave girl." As he turned, his eyes met Leah's. Just for a second. He offered an easy smile. Not flirtatious. Not curious. Simply kind. Then he looked away, calling to the rest of the group as they headed toward the waves. Leah watched him disappear into the water. For the first time in months... She felt like she'd finally reached a place where no one knew her name. She didn't notice the black SUV parked across the street. Or the man inside speaking quietly into his phone. "We've located Miss Bennett." A pause. "Yes, sir." The man glanced toward the beach, where Leah stood watching the ocean with a smile she'd almost forgotten how to wear. "We'll keep watching." He ended the call. Far away, in a city Leah believed she'd left behind forever... A phone vibrated on Richard Bennett's desk. He looked at the message. **Target located.**
