Alex knew he should wait until Zack got there to move her, but what if she bled to death before
he got to them? Reaching out to her he gently rolled her over taking care of any injuries she
might have. Her eyes were closed and she was bleeding from a cut above her right eye. Taking
his shirt off he gently pressed it against her wound, she quietly moaned in pain, and her eyes
starting to flutter open. She had beautiful hazel eyes speckles of green and brown throughout.
Her chestnut curls splayed out upon the rocks. Alex couldn’t stop himself as he reached out with
his free hand to twist a curl around his finger. He had never felt anything so soft before like silk
or satin.
"Hi" she groggily whispered. Shi howled 'her voice. Oh please make her talk some more! What's
her name?' the excitement in Shi's voice, under any other circumstances would have made Alex
happy. But Alex didn't want this. He didn't want to feel anything for her. But at the same time he
wasn't a monster and didn't wish her harm
Frowning he looked down into her eyes. "What's your name?" It came out much ruder than he
intended. The idea of making her hate him crossed Alex’s mind, but the thought only brought
terrifying growls from Shi.
“Apryl" she replied then just as quickly passed back out. Seconds later Zack reached them and
knelt beside Alex without being told what to do, he got to work checking her for injuries. "Who is
she?" He asked while checking her.
"Apryl" Alex said through gritted teeth. He hated that Zack was touching her even if necessary
"her name is Apryl." The possessiveness he felt over her only agitated him more. He didn’t want
to feel these things, and for a second he regretted even letting Shi take over during their run.
"Do you know what happened to her? Or how she ended up here? She doesn’t look like a local
to me."
"All I know is her name is Apryl. I've never met her before now to know what she is doing here"
Zack didn't need to know she was his mate. No one did.
"We should take her to the hospital in town."
"NO!" Alex watched as Zack jumped at his tone. He noticed how Zach’s face changed from
shock to puzzlement . "The pack hospital is closer. Wouldn't it be safer to go there first?" luckily
Alex had always been quick on his feet, and he was confident the good doc wouldn’t question
him anyways. Still, he didn’t want him to just assume anything either.
"Yes alpha of course" if Zack had any questions he didn’t let it show. No one in his pack
questioned him. His word was law and he certainly did not need to answer to anyone.
Alex saw him lean in to pick her up. Shi started to go mad yelling obscenities and was ready to
kill Zach for even thinking about touching her more then he already had. If Zack carried her,
Alex knew he wouldn’t be able to control Shi. And there was a good possibility Zach wouldn’t
make it out of the woods alive. Zach merely nodded as Alex gently picked her up. As she lay
unconscious in his arms he couldn’t help but notice how small she really was. She was tall, but
felt as though she was nothing but skin and bones.
He was taking slow calculated steps in order to ensure her comfort, and made sure her head never jarred against his chest. Every moment he walked with her in his arms he had to remind himself he didn't want this. He didn't need or want a mate. He was happy with the way things were. Doing what and whom he pleased when he pleased. He didn't want to be tied to one person for the rest of his days.
Something was also eating at him about her build. Was she sick? Why did she feel so skinny? This internal battle with himself both angry and curious about her continued as they walked in silence back towards
the pack house. The constant warmth and sparks he felt while he carried her made the internal battle even worse.
It took twice as long to reach the pack hospital than normal because they had to go on two legs
instead of four. Alex would often catch himself staring down at her. The moon light against her
pale skin made her look like a porcelain doll, he wondered how fragile she really was. She had
dark purple circles under eyes like when a person is overly stressed or hasn’t slept.
It made Alex angry, he was an alpha, what was he supposed to do with a weak human for a mate? When you found your mate you were supposed to become stronger not weaker. She would never be able
to defend herself. Shi kept telling Alex that he was wrong that she was everything they were not.
She would make up for where they were lacking.
Finally after walking down a long hallway Zack stopped at a room and motioned for Alex to
place her on the bed. He laid her down as softly as he could. He should go, he had work to do.
His mind told his feet to move, but they felt glued to the floor. So instead he noisily pulled a chair
closer to her bedside and sat down pulling out his phone. Zach was a smart man, so he didn't
dare comment on this.
Alex watched as Zack cleaned and dressed her wounds and checked
her vitals again. Shi was flipping out the entire time. He got on Alex’s nerves so badly Alex
screamed at him to shut up and let Zack do his job. Shi continued to grumble but at least he
could now hear himself think.
"Everything seems to be okay. She doesn't need stitches though she should have a cat scan to
rule out a head concussion. I'll have Darla take her down for one. But I think she will be right as
rain after some rest."
Alex nodded not knowing what to say. He couldn’t deny the shutter of relief
that flowed through him. Zack left the room and Alex was left alone with her. If he wasn't so
dead set against it she would be exactly the type of girl he would go for. She was breathtaking,
but she looked too skinny and had dark circles under her eyes. He wondered what had caused
this.
don't start thinking like that! He had to remind himself again that he didn't want a mate. Shi
was pacing in his mind too busy worrying for her safety to argue with Alex.
The hour was late. Apryl's cat scan was fine and Zack was confident she was going to be okay,
maybe a killer headache. Alex really should go home and go to bed, he had a very busy day
and it was after 3a.m..
He just couldn't bring himself to be more than 2ft away from her. He tried
leaving an hour or so ago but Shi freaked and wouldn’t relent until Alex walked back into the
room. He just needed to see her through this to make sure she was really okay to give his wolf
some piece of mind. Letting out a deep sigh he got as comfortable as his 6ft 6in frame could get
in the chair. It was going to be a long night.
