His wolf was antsy. The constant pacing, whimpering and howling was getting on his nerves. Dude. Just give me an hour to finish and we can go for a run! Alex begged his wolf, Shi. Alex had no idea what had gotten into him but he needed to get this report finished and emailed. The pack didn't run itself.
Shi growled at him but settled long enough to let Alex finish. But as soon as that last T was crossed Shi was back on his feet and howling. Okay okay we are going! Where to boss? Shi's response, one word Sanctuary, Alex should have guessed it was their favorite spot.
His land had many of these waterfalls but none compared to the beauty of this one. Out of respect, his pack kept away knowing this is where he went to be alone. And humans? Well not many ventured that deep into the forest and even if they did the thick brush they would need to pass to enter normally had them turning away.
On his way out of the pack house he mind linked his beta. Hold down the fort going for a run.
Yes alpha. Gage had been by his side since they were pups there was no one here he trusted more. Alex's feet hardly hit the grass when Shi pushed through and took over.
There was no danger so Alex wasn't quite sure why Shi caused the shift so abruptly , he normally only did that when it was necessary. Something was definitely bothering him. If this run didn't fix things they were definitely going to have a chat later. For now Alex was content to let his wolf have control, and within seconds they were running and dodging trees.
They got to the cliffs faster than they ever had before. Without breaking stride Shi leapt over the cliff to the waters below. When we finally surfaced there was a smell. An amazing smell, moon flowers and fresh water. But they only bloom in the summer months and it is currently late fall. Turning his head to where the smell was coming from. He saw the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Words couldn't describe how beautiful she truly was.
Who is she? Alex asked Shi.
Whomever she was she had Shi under her spell, Alex’s wolf trembled. And for the first time that Alex could ever recall, he was utterly silent and still. As if under some spell, Shi walked towards this beautiful creature in front of them. . Man she smells good, why did she smell so good? Alex thought to himself.
Shi was lost in her as he pressed his nose for a closer smell inhaling her scent. She should be terrified, why does she look so calm? Alex felt calm, and confused all at the time. They stood and watched as her hand reached out to touch their face. Her fingers curled into the soft fur of his wolf and sparks flew as her scent invaded our soul.
Mate they both said at the same time.
Alex almost lost himself in her. Her scent, her beauty, and her clam-ness was impressive. He could spend forever with her.
Wait! Alex yelled in their mind, I don't want this!
Shi only huffed back at him, but she smells so good! Shi responded in a mind link as he nuzzled deeper into her hand.
Alex began to fight for control back, his wolf was an animal and wanted nothing more in
this world then to find his mate. The one that was created to be his, to complete them, and make them whole.
Alex on the other hand wanted nothing to do with finding his mate. For a split second he gained control long enough to send her a warning growl. And based on that look of shock on her face he succeeded.
Why would you do that! Now she's afraid of us and will reject us! Shi howled loudly.
Alex could feel the pain in his heart. It wasn't natural to push your mate away. But this was the way it needed to be, the way Alex had always promised himself.
Alex kept fighting Shi to keep control. He was afraid that if he would allow him to be in control any longer Shi would do something that Alex would regret; and he couldn’t allow that.
Alex felt badly for Shi. They were alphas and when they found their mates they couldn't survive without them. The pain from separation would kill them and if she rejected them; well he wasn't sure what would happen because no one rejected an alpha in his lifetime.
Alex, still in wolf form let out another growl before turning and sprinting away from her. He needed distance from her. He couldn’t allow himself to be sucked into the feelings that were
there almost instantaneously for a wolf when they found their mate. Breaking through the tree line Shi started screaming inside his mind. We need her. Now that we have found her we can't run away. The sun is setting and getting darker by the minute we can't leave her out here all alone, what if something happens. Shi pleaded.
Alex could tell that Shi was scared for her. They had stopped far enough away that she couldn't tell they were still there. He had a point. Alex knew that, but he needed time to come up with a plan.
Shi would never allow her to be rejected by us and frankly he wasn't even sure if it was possible. FINE! I'll make sure she gets home. But I'm in charge! shifting back to his human form he quickly dressed. He never knew when he would need something so he and most of the pack had things all throughout the forest. As he tugged on his shirt a scream filled the air, and an icy fear filled his heart.
Without thinking he took off running as fast as his legs would carry him. He knew she wouldn't be under an attack, this was his land, his sanctuary. But she was trespassing and she carried a new smell, his pack could have smelled her and come to check things out.
She better not have a hair on her head harmed by any member in his pack. He couldn't stop himself from the fear and thoughts flooding into his being. What if it was a pack member what would he do, what would he tell them?
Shi was clawing to get out inside his mind. To save his mate. Her scent was getting stronger leading him back to where he left her. Breaking through to the waterfront he stopped dead in his tracks. The sight before him caused ice water to flow through his veins.
She lay in a balled up heap at the base of the rock formation she had been sitting on when he first laid eyes on her. She wasn't moving, and she was silent except for the sounds of
her shallow breathing. With his wolf hearing he was able to hear the steady beat of her heart.
Why isn’t she moving? The fall was only 6ft for so, not all that high.
She's a human you asshole ! Go to her or I will! Alex knew better than to challenge Shi, especially about his mate. All wolves were possessive over their mates, but it was even worse when you were Alpha. Shi would rather die than let anything happen to her, even if he didn't even know her name.
It was in the wolf's nature to protect her and care for her even though they knew nothing about her. It was all a part of the mating pull. It was also one of the reasons Alex did not want a mate. How could he feel anything towards someone whom he knew nothing about?
Yet Shi was right, she was a human; and mate or not his people were sworn protectors of humans. A million things could be wrong; she didn't heal quickly like wolves did.
Zack I need you at sanctuary, like right now! he linked to his pack doctor. Alex cut the link, hearing no or any excuse would not be a good thing right now.
. Taking slow steps towards her, he didn't want to startle her if she was just laying there catching her barring’s. Then he smelled it.
Blood.
Her blood.
Something was definitely wrong if he could smell blood on her. Fear crept up the back of his neck. He may not want her as a mate, but that didn’t mean he wanted to see her hurt. Her pain was his pain; there was nothing he could do to change that. As he reached her side and knelt beside her she did not stir. Her shallow breathing and heartbeat was the only indication that she was still alive.
Help her, please Alex, help her. Shi’s heart was breaking seeing his mate laying on the ground unmoving. Alex’s wolf was strong, yet a few moments in her presence had already begun to turn him weak and that was a major problem for Alex.
Don’t worry bud, I got her. We got her.
