Chapter 1. THE SHATTERED MOON
The moon was far too bright for a night meant to break me…
It hung in the sky like a giant, silver eye, watching over a night that was supposed to be a dream but turned into a nightmare. Elara stood at the very edge of the ceremonial circle; her hands shook as she held the fabric of her thin dress. The material was old and worn, a clear sign of her status. Around her, the more powerful wolves of the Silver Shield pack wore expensive silks and heavy furs.
Tonight was the Mating Ceremony. It was one night a year when the Moon Goddess revealed "Fated Mates”-two souls meant to be together forever. For most wolves, finding a mate meant happiness and a higher status. But Elara tried to keep her expectations low. She was an Omega, the lowest rank in the pack. She spent her days cleaning floors and preparing meals for the warriors. She was used to being ignored. She had spent years telling herself that she didn't need a mate to be happy, but deep down, a small part of her still hoped for someone to finally choose her.
The air was cold, and it smelled of pine trees and smoke from the large fires burning in the middle of the clearing. The High Shaman stood on a stone platform; his face painted with white ash. He began to chant, calling upon the moon to reveal the bonds.
One by one, young wolves stepped forward. When a bond was recognized, a spark would fly between two people, and they would fall into each other's arms. The crowd would cheer, and the celebration would grow louder. Elara watched Sarah, the beautiful daughter of the Beta, stand near the front with a confident smile. Sarah was strong and wealthy; she expected a powerful mate, and everyone assumed she would get one.
Then, everything changed.
Elara felt a sudden, violent heat in her chest. It wasn't a gentle feeling; it felt like a bolt of lightning had struck her heart. Her breath caught in her throat, and her eyes were pulled toward the center of the clearing.
There stood Alpha Kael.
He was the leader of the Silver Shield, a man known for his incredible strength and his cold, calculated mind. He was tall, with dark hair and shoulders so broad they seemed to block out the forest behind him. When Elara looked at him, his eyes changed. They shifted from a deep amber to a glowing, golden color.
At that moment, the truth hit her. The bond was real. The Alpha: the most powerful man in their territory-was her mate.
The clearing went silent. The whispering stopped as everyone realized what was happening. An Omega and an Alpha? It was unheard of. Elara felt a rush of hope. Maybe her life was finally going to change. Maybe she wouldn't have to be "just Elara" anymore. She took a small, shaky step toward him, her heart racing with excitement.
But as she got closer, she saw the expression on Kael’s face. He didn't look happy. He didn't look relieved. He looked angry. He looked at her simple dress and her messy hair, and then he looked at the other Alphas from neighboring packs who were watching the scene.
Kael took a step back. The golden glow in his eyes began to fade, replaced by a cold, hard stare.
"I, Kael of the Silver Shield, do not accept this bond," he said. His voice was loud and clear, echoing through the trees. He looked directly at Elara, his face like a stone mask. "I reject you as my mate."
The rejection felt like a physical strike. The magical bond that had just connected their souls was ripped apart. The pain was so intense that Elara’s knees buckled. She collapsed onto the dirt, a cry of agony escaping her lips. It felt like her heart was being torn out of her chest.
She looked up, hoping it was a mistake, but Kael’s eyes were filled with disgust. He didn't want her. He saw her as a weakness, a mistake made by the goddess.
As Elara lay in the dirt, the silence of the pack was broken by a laugh. It started with Sarah, who was pointing at her. Soon, others joined in. The people Elara had served for years were now mocking her.
"An Omega? She thought she could be our Luna?" someone shouted.
Look at her crying in the mud. She’s pathetic.
Elara pressed her hands onto the cold ground, tears streaming down her face. The shame was worse than the physical pain. To be rejected by an Alpha in front of the entire pack was the greatest humiliation. She felt like a wounded animal.
In her pain, she didn't notice that Kael’s jaw was tight or that his hands were clenched into fists. For a split second, he looked like he might regret what he said, but he quickly turned away. He walked toward the elders, leaving Elara alone on the ground.
"Get up," a sharp voice hissed.
It was Sarah. She was standing over Elara, looking down with a cruel grin. You’re making a fool of yourself. An Omega like you should have known better than to think an Alpha would ever want you. Go back to the kitchens where you belong.
Elara forced herself to stand. Her legs were shaking so badly she could barely keep her balance. Her vision was blurry from the tears, but she saw Kael one last time. He didn't look back. He was talking to the pack leaders as if nothing had happened, as if he hadn't just destroyed her life.
The laughter of the pack followed her as she turned and ran into the darkness of the forest. Every step felt like a needle in her skin. The moon, which she had always loved, now felt like an enemy. She had been chosen for greatness, only to be thrown away like trash.
