LYRA:Lyra The Queen They Buried
Chapter One: They Buried Their Queen
The sky wept.
Dark clouds stretched across the kingdom of Blackthorn like a funeral shroud, swallowing the sun and drenching the capital in relentless rain. Thunder growled in the distance, each rumble sounding like the anger of forgotten gods.
Yet beneath the storm, thousands had gathered.
The streets surrounding the Royal Execution Square were overflowing with nobles, merchants, soldiers, servants, and villagers. Some climbed rooftops for a better view. Others stood shoulder to shoulder, whispering excitedly.
Today, justice would be served.
Or so they believed.
At the center of the square stood a tall platform carved from black stone. Upon it, bound by enchanted silver chains that drained a werewolf's strength, knelt the woman who had once been the pride of Blackthorn.
Queen Lyra Ashbourne.
The Moon Queen.
The woman who had saved the kingdom more times than history would ever remember.
Her silver hair, once admired across the continent, hung in tangled strands around her bruised face. Cuts marked her arms. Dried blood stained the torn white dress she had been forced to wear.
She looked broken.
But when she raised her head...
Her silver eyes still burned with quiet strength.
She would not beg.
Not today.
Not ever.
---
Five years earlier...
Those same streets had echoed with cheers.
"Long live Queen Lyra!"
Flowers had covered the roads as she rode beside Alpha King Kael Blackthorn after leading their armies to victory against the Blood Fang rogues.
She had been only nineteen.
Young.
Hopeful.
Madly in love.
She believed love could conquer ambition.
She believed loyalty would always be rewarded.
She had been wrong.
Terribly wrong.
---
A loud blast from a royal horn pulled everyone back to the present.
The massive palace doors opened.
Royal guards marched into the square in perfect formation before bowing their heads.
King Kael Blackthorn appeared.
His black ceremonial armor gleamed despite the rain. A golden crown rested upon his head, and a crimson cape flowed behind him.
The crowd erupted into applause.
"Long live the Alpha King!"
"Long live King Kael!"
Kael acknowledged them with a calm smile.
To the people, he looked every bit the perfect ruler.
Only Lyra knew the monster hidden beneath the crown.
Walking beside him was a woman draped in emerald silk.
Selene Ashbourne.
Lyra's younger sister.
She wore the Queen's crown.
The same crown Lyra had once worn with pride.
Selene smiled sweetly at the cheering crowd before slipping her hand into Kael's.
The gesture was small.
But it shattered what remained of Lyra's heart.
Her own sister.
The little girl she had protected after their parents died.
The sister she had taught to read.
The sister she had defended from cruel nobles.
Now sat beside her husband.
Wearing her crown.
Living her life.
---
The Royal Herald unrolled a scroll.
"Hear the judgment of the Crown!"
His booming voice silenced the square.
"Lyra Ashbourne, former Queen of Blackthorn, has been found guilty of high treason..."
Every accusation echoed through the air.
Conspiring with enemy kingdoms.
Attempting to assassinate the king.
Stealing royal secrets.
Practicing forbidden magic.
Murdering innocent citizens.
Each charge was a lie.
Each one carefully crafted.
Each one signed with forged evidence.
Lyra listened without interrupting.
There was no point.
Truth had already lost.
---
King Kael slowly rose.
Rain slid from the edges of his cloak as he looked down at the woman who had once been his mate.
"My people," he began.
His voice carried effortlessly across the square.
"For years, I trusted this woman with my kingdom..."
"I gave her my name."
"My crown."
"My heart."
The crowd nodded sympathetically.
Kael sighed dramatically.
"But even kings can be deceived."
Lyra almost laughed.
Deceived?
He was the one who had deceived everyone.
He had forged evidence.
Bribed witnesses.
Silenced anyone who defended her.
Even the royal healer who discovered the truth had mysteriously disappeared.
Still...
No one questioned him.
Power made lies sound like truth.
---
A rotten tomato struck Lyra's shoulder.
Then another.
Soon stones followed.
"Traitor!"
"Murderer!"
"Witch!"
"You deserve to die!"
She looked at the faces screaming for her death.
Many were familiar.
A blacksmith whose daughter she had saved from illness.
A merchant whose business she had rescued during the famine.
A soldier whose life she had personally saved on the battlefield.
Not one recognized her sacrifice.
How quickly gratitude faded.
---
An old voice suddenly cried out.
"Stop!"
The crowd turned.
An elderly woman pushed through the guards.
Lady Miriam.
The former palace housekeeper.
The woman who had raised Lyra after the death of her parents.
She stumbled toward the platform, tears streaming down her wrinkled face.
"She's innocent!"
She pointed directly at Kael.
"Your Majesty... tell them the truth!"
"She never betrayed you!"
"She loved you!"
Guards grabbed her arms.
She struggled desperately.
"I saw the forged documents!"
"I know what happened!"
The square erupted into whispers.
For the first time...
Doubt spread among the crowd.
Kael's expression remained perfectly calm.
He simply raised one finger.
An archer standing atop the palace wall drew his bow.
Lyra's eyes widened.
"No!"
The arrow flew.
It pierced Miriam's chest.
She collapsed onto the rain-soaked stones without another word.
Dead.
A horrified silence fell over the square.
Kael lowered his hand.
"Anyone who spreads lies against the Crown shares the same fate."
No one spoke again.
Fear had won.
---
The executioner stepped forward.
He was enormous.
Nearly seven feet tall.
His silver axe had ended the lives of hundreds.
Today...
It would claim a queen.
He looked at Lyra with unexpected sadness.
"Do you have any final words?"
Lyra remained silent for a long moment.
Rain dripped from her hair.
Then she stood.
The chains rattled as she slowly turned toward the people.
"I have served this kingdom since I was sixteen."
"My blood watered your fields."
"My sword defended your homes."
"My hands healed your children."
She smiled sadly.
"And today..."
"You believe I am your enemy."
Several people lowered their heads.
Others avoided her gaze.
"You may bury my body..."
Her silver eyes lifted toward the sky.
"But remember this."
"No lie lives forever."
"The truth always returns."
---
Kael frowned.
"Enough."
The executioner lifted the axe.
Its blade glistened beneath a flash of lightning.
The crowd held its breath.
The axe began to fall.
Then—
A deafening explosion tore through the palace gates.
BOOM!
Stone walls crumbled.
Soldiers were thrown across the courtyard.
Massive black wolves charged through the smoke, each carrying armored warriors bearing a crimson banner.
The Crimson Moon.
Every noble in Blackthorn recognized the symbol.
The strongest werewolf kingdom on the continent.
At their head rode a man in black armor.
His wolf was enormous.
Its crimson eyes glowed like burning embers.
The warrior leaped from its back before it had fully stopped moving.
He landed on the execution platform with enough force to c***k the stone beneath him.
An overwhelming Alpha aura exploded across the square.
Even seasoned warriors instinctively stepped backward.
King Kael narrowed his eyes.
"Rowan Draven..."
The name spread through the crowd like wildfire.
The undefeated Alpha King.
The ruler no kingdom dared provoke.
The man rumored never to kneel.
Yet Rowan ignored everyone.
His crimson eyes searched only for one person.
Lyra.
When he saw the chains around her wrists...
Something inside him shattered.
Slowly...
He walked toward her.
Then...
To the shock of every person watching...
The most feared Alpha King in the world dropped to one knee before the condemned queen.
He lowered his head.
"My Queen."
His voice trembled.
"I came..."
"...too late."
Lyra stared at him in confusion.
She had seen him only once before, years ago, after saving a wounded stranger in the Whispering Forest.
She had never known his name.
Never imagined he was a king.
"You..."
she whispered.
Rowan looked into her eyes, filled with grief that words could not express.
"I searched every kingdom."
"I searched every battlefield."
"I promised myself..."
"...that when I became strong enough..."
"...I would return for you."
A single tear escaped his eye.
"But fate was cruel."
---
Kael stepped forward, fury flashing across his face.
"Take one more step toward my queen, and you will die."
Rowan slowly stood.
His expression became frighteningly cold.
"Your queen?"
He laughed bitterly.
"You buried the greatest queen this world has ever known."
His crimson eyes locked onto Kael.
"And for that..."
"I will bury your kingdom."
Before another word could be spoken—
An arrow shot from the palace walls.
It was aimed at Rowan.
Lyra saw it first.
Without thinking...
She threw herself in front of him.
The arrow pierced her heart.
Time stood still.
Rowan caught her before she touched the ground.
Blood soaked his hands.
"No..."
His voice broke.
"Lyra... no..."
She looked into the eyes of the man who had crossed kingdoms to save her.
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
"You came..."
she whispered weakly.
"I only wish..."
"...we had met sooner."
Her heartbeat slowed.
The moon emerged from behind the storm clouds, bathing the square in silver light.
A gentle voice echoed through the heavens.
"Child of the Moon..."
"Will you rise again?"
With the last breath she possessed, Lyra whispered,
"Yes."
A brilliant silver light swallowed the world.
And destiny began anew.
