--Miccoli POV--
Cassidy sat across from me silently looking out the window. I wasn't sure what was on her mind, but she had been quiet since breakfast, only speaking to say a quick "Thank You" or to give directions to her In-Laws. My stomach was in knots. I didn't want her to go, but for the sake of trying this new friendship thing, I knew that I shouldn't push.
Friendship
The word felt like poison to me. How could I be friends with her, when I wanted so much more? When the thought of her being in someone else's arms literally tore me to pieces? I shift in the driver's seat. The whole thing really bothered me, but if it meant having her around...then I would adjust. "How come you didn't get someone to drive?" Cassidy broke the silence finally staring at me.
"You clearly can afford a driver."
"Driving is one of the many things I enjoy doing myself...plus I wanted to spend a bit more time with you."
Both sentiments were true. I had immense wealth in the mortal world and could afford anything I wanted, including drivers, cooks, maids, etc, but driving was something that I had come to truly enjoy doing. In the Dark Realm, there wasn't a need for such trivial things as cars, as we easily moved within the darkness, so this in addition to many other things were new and enjoyable to me. "Cassidy are you alright? You've been really quiet." I press slightly. She looks out the window and sighs. After a long pause, she says. "What is the unfinished business you have here?" I was taken back slightly by the question. I forgot that I told her that. My brow furrowed. Should I tell her the truth?
"There is no unfinished business...I was banished here."
"I thought you said-"
"I lied." She looks at me intensely for a while without speaking. "Where are you from then? And why are you banished here?" She asks.
"It's such a long story, Cassidy."
"We have a long drive, and since you lied to me before. For our friendship, I suggest you tell the truth."
In just one sentence, she had me pinned to the corner. It was clear that she wasn't about to let this go.
"I'm from the Dark Realm...and I was banished here for killing a lot of innocents."
Her eyes widened, and I knew immediately I had made a mistake. I had scared her. "Cassidy, I would never-" "Why did you kill them?" Her voice was almost a whisper, but she never stopped looking at me. I didn't want her to fear me, but it was something about her eyes that made it so hard to lie to her again.
"I killed...in a fury of grief...for my murdered wife." My sentence lingered in the air for a long time, both of us basking in understanding it.
"Do you regret it?"
"Everyday."
"Because of your banishment?"
"No...Banishing me was honestly too kind of a fate. I regret it because I'll never forget the eyes of those innocents I killed...I'll never allows myself to forget." This was my true punishment. To forever think about those who died at my hands for no reason. The truth was, I had given up on myself a long time ago. I followed along with Elder Helm's and Ramsey's wishes out of blind loyalty but I had no true plans of returning to my kingdom or the Dark Realm. I would have gladly allowed myself to rot. Cassidy took her hand and placed it gently over mine calming me.
"That in which you were..you aren't any longer." I smile weakly at her and then focus back on the road. She had so much faith in me, while I had none for myself.
"Tell me about her."
"What?"
"About your wife...tell me about her." A lump began to form in my throat. I hadn't talked of Selene in a long time, refusing to mention her name to anyone. Cassidy takes her finger and makes little circles on the outside of my hand, and I feel a small electrical surge shoot through me. "Her...Her name was Selene and she was beautiful. Not just on the outside, but on the inside as well. She was born of the Coven-the witch kingdom, and she was beyond powerful. An enigma, who taught me that though our power was rooted in darkness, its intentions didn't have to be that of malice. That's also why I regret what I did...Selene would be so disappointed in me...I loved her so much. Honestly...I loved her as soon as I laid eyes on her, although for her, it wasn't quite the same reaction. I remember the first time we met, she tried to kill me." We both laugh.
"She tried to kill you?"
"Yeah...but that's a story for another day." I wink at Cassidy and she nods smiling. It felt good to laugh again at the thought of Selene.
"So were you as a big deal back in the Dark Realm?"
"If you consider a king a big deal then yes."
"KING?" Cassidy's voice raised ten octaves, I couldn't help but laugh.
"Yes, I'm the King of the Incubus."
"B-but if you're banished...what about your people?"
"My second in command stepped up to fill in the role, until my return."
"You-your return?" The sadness in Cassidy's voice was evident. "Yes, one day I may be granted permission to return." Cassidy removes her hand from mine and leans back against the window. She wouldn't look at me, but she didn't have to for me to understand what she felt because I, felt the same way too.
"Well, if you ever do leave...someone's gonna miss you a lot."
"And I will miss that someone even more."
The green Exit Sign alerted me that we were close to our destination, and I silently curse myself at how fast the time has gone. I don't want our car ride to end...I don't want her to leave me.
"So tell me more about this Dark Realm place."
"What do you wanna know?"
"What's it like?"
"Not really much different than the Mortal Realm."
"Is it just the Dark and Mortal?"
"No there's two more. The Light Realm, which is made up of supernaturals whose power comes from light. Like Angels and Fairies...and then there's the Forgotten Realm."
"..Forgotten?"
"Yeah, it's a place no one wishes to be...made of the souls of vile mortals and some supernaturals...mainly demons."
"But aren't you a demon?"
"Incubus were the only demons who agreed to follow the rules of the Elders...thus we were allowed a kingdom in the Dark Realm."
"ELDERS?!" Cassidy was shouting again while rubbing her temples dramatically. "Now there are Elders...this is so f*****g confusing." I laugh at her.
"You're actually handling the knowledge pretty well."
"Well after realizing that the guy you thought was just a dream, is actually a demon who has not only seen you naked but saved your life...you kinda just start to go with the flow. Besides I've always had an affinity towards the supernatural and the darkness...It's kinda cool knowing it's real." She punches my arm, causing me to chuckle lightly.
"So these Elders...are they like the Be all See All?"
"Yes. They oversee all the Realms including-" I stop myself.
"Including what?"
"I don't think you can handle it."
"Try me."
"Including the mortal realm." Cassidy ponders what I've said until her eyes widen again. "You mean there are other people who know about you all?" I shake my head yes. "All rulers of the kingdoms have close ties with the Elders...you all have different names for your rulers..President, Emperor, King but nonetheless they are your rulers..and they all must confer with the Elders." Cassidy shifts her entire body to face me. "The damn government! It's always the damn government." She mutters to herself and I laugh once more.
We pull up to her In-Laws home. It was a large white and gray home, and from the bustle, it was clear that something was going on.
"It's Mark's parent's anniversary. They always throw these large outlandish events, but go the extra mile for their anniversary" Cassidy says, making a face. "I take it that's not your type of event?" Cassidy turns and looks out the window again. "Not my type of event...not my type of people." She says under her breath.
"Thanks for bringing me."
"Of course." I wait for her to open the door, but she doesn't.
"Cassidy, is something on your mind?" After some time she turns to me, her face extremely serious.
"It's just something you said about the Dark Realm...You said there was the Incubus Kingdom and the Coven, but are there other kingdoms...like...one with..wolves."
"You mean werewolves? Yes, there is a werewolf kingdom." Cassidy inhales sharply and rubs her right arm.
"A-And their ruler...wh-what are they called?"
"Why do you want to know?"
"Miccoli, what are they called?"
"I think they're called an Alpha". The color drains from Cassidy's face immediately, and tears begin to well in the corner of her eyes. She looks back at me utterly terrified. "Cassidy what's going on?" I say grabbing her by the shoulders.
"I-"
"Mommy!!!" I little voice sings from outside of my passenger side door causing Cassidy to push me away. She opens the door and immediately steps out. "Bug A Boo!" She says crouching down and scooping Addeline up in her arms. Addeline smiles a big toothy grin in response. "Mommy I missed you! You see I knew dress." She struggles against Cassidy until she puts her down so she could pose. "It's beautiful...just like you." Cassidy gently bops her on the nose, and I feel my heart jump. I loved seeing them together.
"Addeline this is my friend Mr.Vincetti. He was nice enough to drop mommy off." Addeline waves to me, Hazel's eyes sparkling. Addeline had never seen me in my human form, I didn't want to confuse her. I figured staying as an Incubus would allow her to process that I wasn't real when it came time for our tea parties to come to an end. Addeline runs over to my side of the car and knocks on the door. I open it slightly, and she hands me her hand to shake. "It's nice to meet you Addeline," I say to her. She smiles and begins to laugh "You're silly." She says. I look at her in confusion. "Why is that." She huffs at me and puts her hands on her hips. She lowers her voice making sure only I could hear.
"Mr. Perrywinkle...this face is pretty...but I like the other one better." She laughs again before skipping back to Cassidy.
"Thank you again," Cassidy says somewhat absentmindedly. I nod and smile at her.
"Come on mommy!" Addeline screeches before pulling Cassidy away towards the commotion, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
