My heart was pounding with excitement when we were informed our mate had woken up. I could tell that Phoenix was excited too, no matter how much he tried to hide it.
We reached the spare room in no time, but when we got there, she wasn't there.
Phoenix shouted at the nurse, asking where the girl was. She must have left her for only a minute when she came to tell us she had woken up.
Phoenix began sniffing around, trying to catch her scent. We followed it out of the Alpha house, and Phoenix began to run.
"She's not far away!" He called as we ran to the opposite side of the pack land from where we found her. She was definitely trying to run away from something.
We could see her running away, she was obviously too weak to shift. We sped up, Phoenix taking one side and me the other.
We managed to catch up with her. She was stunned, and she looked like a deer in headlights.
"Mate," she whispered to Phoenix.
"Mate," she whispered to me. I could see her brain trying to work out what was going on. She was so confused and began to run again, but Phoenix stood in her way. She looked up at him, her big brown eyes looking pleadingly at him. When she sensed he wouldn't move, she ran the other way, but I stood in front of her.
"Please!" She said as she stared up at me with water-filled orbs. I gave a quick look of concern to Phoenix, who looked at me equally concerned back at me.
"What's the matter?" I asked her, and I could see the worry on her face.
"I'm not safe, I need to go." She replied as she tried to run again, but Phoenix stopped her. He grabbed her arm, and she seemed to calm down under his touch.
"What are you running from?" He asked, looking into her eyes.
"I'm not safe, please let me go," she pleaded.
"But we are your mates!" I told her.
"I don't care, I need to go!" She said. Those words cut me deep, but they stunned Phoenix. He let go of her arm, and she began to run again.
"Phoenix!" I called out, chasing after her. He ran ahead of me and grabbed her entire body, throwing her over his shoulder.
He strutted off towards the Alpha house. She kicked and screamed all the way there. I mind-linked one of the pack doctors to meet us there.
Phoenix slammed all the doors open until we reached the spare bedroom, and he placed her down on the bed, with more force than he should have done.
"What are you running from?" He asked her in an aggressive tone.
"Easy, Phoenix," I told him. Her eyes darted between us.
"No, she needs to tell us." He replied.
She sat quietly on the bed, not daring to say anything. She looked scared. Something I don't think Phoenix noticed.
"We are your mates, we will not hurt you." I told her softly. She looked questioningly at me.
"What's your name?" I asked her.
"Iris," she replied timidly.
"Iris," Phoenix said quietly.
"What are you running from, Iris?" I asked her.
"Why do you think I'm running from anything?" She asked in return.
"Maybe because I just caught you?" Phoenix stated.
"Then, I was running from you." She replied to him, which caused a smirk to spread across his face.
"Then... why is it that we found you unconscious on the borders of our land, covered in mud and blood?" He asked her, taking a seat on one of the chairs in the room.
Something seemed to click in her mind. Whether she realized she had no choice but to tell us the truth or she simply just wanted to give up her ruse, I wasn't sure.
"I was running from my old pack." She explained, and tears welled up in her eyes. Phoenix didn't notice.
"Why are you running from them?" I asked her curiously.
"What did you do?" He asked her in an accusatory tone. She was shocked for a second, and then she became uneasy. I knew she was thinking about fleeing again, but Phoenix didn't let up.
"We've got all day." He said, and I took a step closer to the door.
She noticed and, again, fought herself. "I didn't do anything, I was just sick of my old pack and needed to get out. I didn't want them to find me anywhere near their pack. I didn't want to be dragged back there. I thought if I just ran far enough, they'd assume I wasn't worth the chase, and they'd leave me alone."
I looked towards Phoenix, and he looked back at me. We had both listened to her heart beat, it was steady, indicating she was telling the truth.
"Okay, but why do you keep running, even from us?" I asked her.
"I don't think I'm far enough away from them, yet. And, I don't know who you are." She said, looking between Phoenix and me.
"Why would they still be chasing you?" Phoenix asked.
"Because I belong to them." she replied with a grimace.
"You don't belong to anyone!" I told her. She gazed up at me with a look of doubt.
"I'm Chad, and that's my brother, Phoenix," I told her delicately. "You're our mate and, if you agree to stay here, we can protect you. You'll be able to join our pack, so that you don't have to be a rogue anymore." I offered her. She looked intrigued. I looked towards Phoenix, who nodded his agreement to me.
Doctor Sam-who had treated her earlier-walked in.
Deciding it was probably better for her trust if she were to see the doctor alone, Phoenix and I got up and waited outside.
"What do you think?" I asked Phoenix.
"I believe her, but she isn't telling us the full story," he said. "She will when she's ready, but I think it's best if she stays with us."
"So, we should probably have another chat with Eric." I suggested. He nodded his head.
"We are going to have to tell dad about this." He shuddered. I frowned as I looked at him, but before I was able to reply, Doctor Sam walked out of her room.
"She's fine, and she has also agreed to stay here for the time being. She's a little confused about finding her mates, so she just needs to adjust, just continue life normally, and she'll be ready when she's ready."
Phoenix and I looked at each other, he nodded his head, and we walked into her room.
"Sam says you want to stay here?" I said as I moved a seat closer to her bed. Phoenix did the same.
"If that's okay?" She asked worriedly.
Phoenix looked at her confused. Maybe by the amount of timidity, I wasn't sure.
"Of course it's okay, we suggested it." I replied.
"Thank you," she said softly.
Phoenix looked confused again. He leaned back in his chair with his legs stretched out and observed her.
"If you like, you can keep this room. My room is next door, and Phoenix's room is across the hall. Our soon-to-be Beta Ethan is down the hall, and our soon-to-be Gamma Jeremy is next door to him. They're away at the minute, so it's just us," I told her. Seeing how timid she was, I used my kindest voice.
"Thank you, but if you prefer me to be in the pack-house, I'll go there," she said, looking at the floor.
Phoenix and I shared a look.
"You're perfectly okay to be here." I replied. She looked shocked, and then she scrunched up her nose and debated asking a question.
"Are you okay?" I asked her as a way to get her to ask what she wanted to ask.
"Wouldn't it be easier if I were in the pack-house so that I could get the chores done and be out of the way?" She asked with confusion.
"Sorry?" I said, and Phoenix sat forward in his chair faster than I could blink.
"What were you in your old pack?" Phoenix asked in a disgusted tone. She suddenly flushed red, for whatever reason, he made her feel embarrassed.
"I was the one who did everything," she sighed. "I cooked, I cleaned, but most importantly, I kept out of the way," she said in her quietest voice.
"You were a slave to your old pack?" He said aggressively, and she flinched. I darted a stern look towards him. He sat back furiously.
She didn't say anything, she shyly and awkwardly kept her gaze on the floor.
"We don't have slaves here, we have helpers. It's mainly the older ladies whose children have grown up that look after everyone here", I smiled at her. She smiled back at me briefly, before she noticed Phoenix glaring at her, and then she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
A few minutes later, we left her room, letting her know that this is now her house as much as it is ours, and she was fine wandering freely around the place.
