The time before it fell apart.
My life was nothing out of the ordinary, well except for the fact that my family and I were members of the Willow pack. I lived in a small 3 bedroomed cabin with my Mum, Dad and older brother Dean, we were a regular werewolf family. Mum and Dad both worked for the pack, Dad was a guard and Mum was a housekeeper for the pack house, me and Dean were students in the pack school. Dean was older than me, he was nearly 17 and I had just turned 13. Being 13 was great, I had met my Wolf Rylie just after midnight on my 13th birthday. She was such a happy Wolf, full of confidence and support for me. She was perfect.
One night in April, Mum and Dad called me and Dean down to the living room. "Dean, Gwen, we need to talk to you about something serious." Dad said, sounding concerned. He continued, "There have been a number of rogue attacks around the area lately, lots of people have been going missing and lots of people have been killed, torn apart and left to the elements to rot. The latest attack was just outside of our village, so I need you both to take extra care when you are out for school. Always be aware of your surroundings, if you see someone that you don't know, do not approach them or engage with them at all. Stay in groups of at least 2 or 3 people when you are outside. Dean, I'm expecting you to watch out for Gwen, and protect her if the need arises". Dean just glared at me with disgust and hatred in his eyes, "She's 13, surely she's big enough to look after herself". Dean had hated me since the day I was born, my parents said it was because he was jealous that he wasn't the only one getting their attention anymore. I always used to try and be nice to him, now I just avoid him as much as possible. "Dean"! my father growled, "Gwen is your little sister, it's your responsibility as her older brother to protect her. If something were to happen to me and your mother, you would be fully responsible for Gwen until she became 18. You will protect her to the best of your ability!" "Whatever". Dean muttered as he left the room, heading back to his disgusting bedroom.
"I'm pretty sure I could fight a rogue if I had to." I told my parents, hoping that I sounded at least a little bit reassuring. "I've been training hard at school. I've even managed to put some of the boys on their butt's."
My Dad gave a small smile, but was shaking his head. "No Gwen, if there is an attack and Dean isn't with you, then you must find a place to hide. I have a spray a bit like deodorant that can mask your scent. If you find yourself caught out there, spray yourself, hide and wait for me, Mum or Dean to come and find you." "We will always find you sweetheart." Mum piped in with a genuine, loving smile on her face that reached all the way up to her sparkling green eyes.
After Mum and Dad had finished talking I headed back upstairs to my bedroom. I loved my room, it was pretty and pink, the walls, the floor, my furniture, all pink. I had love hearts and flowers on my walls and lots of stuffed animals everywhere. it was a very girly room and I was a very girly girl. I laid down on my bed and finished the last bit of my homework, then I headed to the bathroom to shower and brush my teeth before getting on some pyjamas and getting into bed, I feel asleep straight away, and had a peaceful night's sleep. I had no worries about rogues, I knew I was safe with my family and pack to protect me.
The next morning went the usual way, I woke up, went to the bathroom to do my business, then went to my room to get dressed. I decided to wear my light blue skinny jeans, my favourite pink hoody and my pink converse shoes. I brushed my hair out and put it up in a high pony tail, then added a touch of light pink lip gloss. As I headed downstairs I could smell the bacon Mum was cooking, Mum was the best cook, I loved everything she made. I entered the kitchen just as Mum was laying the food out on the table. "Good morning Gwen". mum said with a loving smile on her face. She poured me a glass of orange juice and we sat together and ate breakfast. 10 minutes later Dean came stomping down the stairs I his usual grumpy mood. He sat at the table and ate his food, not saying a word to either me or mum. He ate and then left the house, probably heading to school. "Mum, why does Dean still hate me?" I asked, "it can't still be the jealousy thing, he must have got over that by now." Mum got up and hugged me, "Don't worry Gwen, I'm sure he doesn't hate you, it's probably just a hormone thing. Men are the dominant ones in our species and he's probably at that age where he's starting to feel more like a man and less like a boy. Hopefully next year he will find his mate, and he will be happy." I nodded, but I had a horrible feeling that Dean would always hate me.
I got to school around 30 minutes after I had talked to mum, and went straight to my locker as I knew that's where my friends would be waiting for me. I got along with nearly all of the kids at school, but my 2 best friends were Steph and Jo, we had been friends since forever. As expected, Steph and Jo were by my locker reading through a magazine together. "Hi Gwen" Steph said, looking up from the magazine. "Hi" I replied smiling and giving them a small wave. We fell into our usual conversations about clothes, makeup and boys, it was so easy to be with my friends, we talked about anything and everything. Jo was obsessed with who her mate would be, she dreamt of the stereotypical tall, dark and handsome Knight on a white horse. Steph and I had to constantly remind her that we still had to wait 5 years, though I think Jo was ready to be mated up, settled down with a white picket fence lifestyle already.
We walked into our 1st lesson, English only to see a note scribbled on the board. EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY IN THE GYM. We all guessed it was something to do with the rogues, Steph and Jo's parents had talked to them about it too. We walked to the gym along with hundreds of other kids and sat down on the benches that were out. All of the teachers where at the front of the room with our principal Mr Stratton talking together in whispers. My Stratton stepped up to a microphone. "I need everyone to pay close attention to everything I say." the gym fell silent, hundreds of eyes pointing towards the front of the room. "We have just been informed that rogues have entered the village. Every person here will need to go to the schools emergency bunkers immediately and you must all remain silent and calm. we have no time for panic, we have to move now. Everyone find your form tutors and follow them to the bunkers now." A loud mumble spread through out the gym as people started looking for their friends and form tutors. Steph, Jo and I were all sat together, so we headed straight to our form tutor along with the rest of our class and followed her to a bunker. The bunkers were large rooms underneath the school, they were only visible if you knew where they were. perfectly camouflaged with their surroundings. Each bunker could fit 4 classes in, it was a bit of a squeeze, but we all fit comfortably enough. Everyone sat down silently and listened for anything, holding onto friends hands, and praying to the moon goddess that their families were safe.
After around 10 minutes of sitting and listening, we finally heard the rogues as they came into our school. We could hear them growling and throwing things around the school, the banging and crashing sounds were relentless, seeming to go on for hours. Everyone in our bunker was scared. We had never witnessed a rogue attack before, we had only heard stories about them from our elders and read about them in history books. There hadn't been a rogue attack in this part of the country for over 30 years.
The hours ticked on, but the rogues never gave up on their assault on our school and village. Many of the kids down here had gone to sleep, but I couldn't sleep, so I spoke with Rylie for comfort. "Rylie, I'm scared" I told her. "Be brave Gwen, you will survive this as long as you're brave and don't give into your fear. I will be with you throughout all of this and for the rest of your life, I will always support you in everything you do." Rylie really was the best Wolf.
After a couple more hours everything was silent. We heard the teachers phone ringing, then the teachers gave us the all clear. We slowly left the bunkers, not knowing what to expect. The school was destroyed, furniture, books and paper broken and scattered everywhere. Windows and doors smashed, and a few dead bodies in the halls. We were told to head to our form rooms so we could be collected by our parents. Everyone was in a state of silent shock as we slowly walked through the halls.
My form room was just around the next corner, but our way was blocked by a group of older boys, I think they were in Dean's year. One of the boys, I think he was called Danny, locked eyes with me, fear apparent in them. "Gwen, don't go this way." He managed to fumble out. The other boys were all looking at me now. "I have to go this way, my form room is over there." I told him nodding in the direction of my destination. "No Gwen" one of the other boys joined in, "please don't go this way, I'm begging you". Now I knew I had to go that way, they were trying to hide something from me. Was Dean down there hurt? I had to see. I forced my way through the boys, but then stopped. Frozen in place. I felt my knees buckle, my hands flew up to my mouth as a long loud scream passed my lips. My parents, both of them laying just in front of me. Dead. It looked like my dad had been trying to protect my mum, as he was laying on top of her, trying to shield her from the attack. The rogues had killed my parents. My parents were dead. I had to find Dean.
