Chapter One
Evie’s POV
Here I am. After all this time I’m genuinely surprised they still want me. I was supposed to start my internship at the publishing house a month ago, I bet I’ll be behind everyone and look like a fool. However, at the same time they could have disapproved my request of a delayed start.
I look up before me, the towering building which looks cold and stiffly professional stands before me as I take a final welcoming breath. ‘This is just a meeting’ I whisper to myself as I head inside the glass automated doors. Inside it was perfectly white with tiled flooring and an atmosphere that felt cold and sharp. The receptionist looks up, smiles, speaking in a confident brisk tone asks “Are you Miss Evangeline Snow?” I muster up the courage and step forward.
“Yes that’s me,” well that sounded more confident than I thought. She leads me around the corner of the elongated hallway to a set of elevators.
When in the elevator the professional lady, whom I have no name to, presses the number for the 5th floor. It springs to life, as weird as this sounds this elevator feels expensive within itself. Nothing like the cheap old ones in my hometown where you feel like it could break any second. As the elevator comes to a standstill she guides me down another spacious hallway, a constant tide of people walking past with paperwork in their hands. A mixture of men and women. I’m glad to see women around, it’s not been a well known thing for women to be publishers until recent. Usually kept behind the scenes. The CEO must have a brain for equality, which makes a change to society.
As I gather my thoughts we stop at a large black door with frosted glass ceiling to floor on either side. A plaque on the door makes me realise where we’ve reached. The office of Mr Wolfe. He’s the CEO of Wolfe publishing and I’m guessing he’s the one who requested this meeting.
A few months ago I had to complete an application in order to become an intern. I had to dissect a lengthy manuscript and send it back pending review. A month later it was a Teams call to discuss the review of my work. That’s when I found out I was accepted. Then everything changed.
Suddenly a cough brought me back to the present, leaving my thoughts behind. The receptionist asks ‘are you ready?” I nod my head and she knocks earning an instant deep voiced ‘enter.’
As we step into the vast office I notice things I probably shouldn’t be thinking about since this is a big opportunity for me. His office is darker compared to the rest of the building. All the glass was frosted, dark oak bookcase and desk and a black industrial style coffee table with a brown leather sofa next to it. Then I noticed. He was looking at me. “Care to take a seat Miss Snow?” His low voice spoke almost amused as my curiosity. Apologising quickly I sat in the chair across from him and he ordered the receptionist away to continue the meeting.
