(Luca POV)
I walked down the hallway after locking Aubrette's room. We knew that if given the chance she would try to run again and we needed her here. She had run for months. Every time we had honed in on her location and found her hiding spot she had moved.
The last place was filled with her scent. She had to of stayed there for a while. When I saw the damage done to the wall of the little room she had slept in I almost panicked but had she been hurt or the goddess forbids dead, we would know. If any of my mates were injured I would feel their pain and vice versa. If they died it would be as if a part of my soul was torn from me and well, I can't explain a pain like that. I've known Fae who have lost their mate. They are like a shell of their old selves. Their names faded on our marking and it was as if we lived with a gaping wound in our hearts. Honestly, I think a lot about the bond is crazy and bullshit, but I didn't create it. The goddess did! And she insisted on playing chess with all of our lives daily.
I knew if Nikolai heard me talking about the Goddess he would scold me. He hated for me to disrespect her. Even in the slightest way, he would jump my ass. And not in a good way either.
When Aubrette had run it had broken something inside Niko. So many had abandoned and left him. We were all he had. He had been so excited for so long for our little mate to join us. We had talked him into waiting when we found out she was only fifteen when we all had found each other, we had talked Niko into waiting and allowed her time. We decided we would go for her on her 18th birthday. And even though I knew Niko had watched her from afar on several occasions he had agreed to wait.
So on her 18th birthday, we set off with an ecstatic Niko to pick up our mate, our keeper. The one who would complete our bond and us all together. We had performed a locator spell and found her in her old house. But, when we arrived to get her she had run from us. I can still remember Niko's pain as I watched him hit his knees screaming her name. Everyone had always left him. All he had was us, and now one of his mates was doing the same to him.
I was so angry at her. I was glad I hadn't found her after Brec and I had searched the city for her because if I had found her that first night I would have killed her for hitting Niko so bad. The longer she ran the worse he got. Every time we got a location on her she would be gone by the time we got there and a little more of him would break each time. It got where Brec and I no longer told him when we got a hit on her location.
The last hit we got had been at an old house on the edge of the city. When we arrived her scent had hit us strongly. Brec and I both were overwhelmed. We found a little room where she had slept and lived for a while. It was the longest she had ever stayed anywhere. But when we noticed the damage to the wall we grew nervous. We knew someone had taken her, but we didn't know who.
We had rushed home and performed a locator spell to find she was in the forest in a cave system. There were only two people who lived in those caves we knew of. Silva and Parker were seekers we had dealt with for some time. We knew their mother had placed a veil over the cavern they lived in so we had to find a way to locate Aubrette.
Once we were able to take down the veil we sent the hounds for her and then we followed. Though Silva and Parker weren't very strong they were still dangerous. Their mother, however, was truly the dangerous one. But she hadn't lifted a finger toward us. When Parker had held a knife to Aubrette's throat I worried what Niko would do but he handled it beautifully. And when she had said Sumba's name before she had passed out and after Niko wouldn't allow us to kill the old woman. So we had taken them to the dungeons where they remained as of now until we figured out what to do with them.
I looked down at the tray of food as I made my way to her room. I didn't want to see her but I had to choose. As much as I hated her I loved her just as much. And I couldn't allow her to starve. Because of her, I had almost lost my mate. One I was already bonded to. One I already had a relationship with. One that didn't run from me!
I fished in my jeans until my hand wrapped around the skeleton key for this corridor of the palace. I took it out and unlocked her door making my way inside.
I walked in to find Aubrette reading on the couch. Her scent wrapped around me and I wanted nothing more than to cross the room and bury my d**k deep inside her claiming her as my own. I could tell she was still pure because of her scent and that made me want her even more. She would be the perfect little submissive.
I pushed my thoughts away as my anger overrode my lust for my little mate. I refused to even look at her but stifled a grin at her shock when I entered. She watched me cautiously. "Is there anything you need?" I asked without so much as looking her way. "A television would be nice. It's boring having nothing to do but read," she answered, her voice making my d**k switch in my jeans. I nodded my head. "Eat! I'll be back to get your tray. I'll see what I can do about the television. Until then you can use this." I handed her the iPad I had brought for her. She looked at it curiously.
Her face changed from curious to excited. "It's hooked up to the wifi here that has a scrambler so it's not traceable. If you contact anyone you will put us all in danger. Don't make me regret this!" I went to hand her the IPad but paused when I saw a f*****g Phoenix sitting on the bed.
My eyes widened. "What is that f*****g creature doing in here? " I growled almost as I backed up, the f*****g thing eyed me like I was its next meal. " I raised him since he was a chick. He was taken from his flock. I tried to get him to go to a flock once he could fly but he refuses. I am his flock. " She explained to me as I eyed the creature.
"Do you know how dangerous those things are? I've seen them take on some of the strongest Fae and pluck their eyes out after they've killed them and eat them for f*****g dinner. " I didn't take my eyes away from the devil creature.
Phoenix's hated any dark fae. And here one was in a house full of them. She stifled a giggle she didn't think I had heard, " Blip is just a big baby. He is just a little protective of me." she explained to me as she went to Blip and ruffled his feathers. He pressed his head into her hand wanting her to scratch him like he was a f*****g cat. I shook my head in disbelief. "I'll just leave this here." I laid the iPad on the dresser beside her food. Don't let Nikolai or Brecclan see the iPad or that damn Phoenix. " I instructed her. "Well, I gotta go. I'll be back later," I grunted before turning and leaving the room.
