Chapter 2

"Umm...Dave. What are you doing here?" Gina asked, her eyes wide in shock as her ex-boyfriend walked into her office and gave her a full-body hug like the last time they had spoken wasn't over a year ago. The guy shrugged and ran a hand through his blond hair as he leaned back on her table and gave her an amused expression. "I came to visit you, of course," he said as his face turned to a sad one, and he held one of her hands as he continued, "and to apologize for my behavior." Gina drew out her hand from his, folding them across her body even as a slight thrill ran through her spine. Dave, her boyfriend of three years, had suddenly ghosted her one day and fell off the face of the planet. She had done everything to reach him, even up to the point of hiring a private investigator, but nothing turned up and she had spent over six months trying to get over him. Now he was back with a small grin like nothing had changed and he never left. "I don't know what to tell you, Dave," she replied and looked at Scott who was still standing at the entry of her office with a fist clenched on the doorknob. He seemed very alert and had a frown on his face, but she couldn't blame him. If she wasn't so tired, she would have sent Dave out of the office but instead, she just looked at him and continued, "but this is not the right place and time for such conversation." The guy raised his arms and leaned away from the table, looking between her and Scott. "Fine, I'll go. Let's meet up sometime alright? I'll give you a call." He blew a kiss in the air and moved away from her, as he bounced out of the door. When he got to where Scott stood, the two of them stared at each other for a moment before Dave turned back to Gina. "He still works for you? Hmm." At that, he walked out and Gina let out a sigh. She could always trust Dave to show up unexpectedly and scatter her train of thoughts. Now, more than anything, she just wanted to go home and rest. She picked up her bag again and silently made her way out of the office, Scott closely behind her heels. His jaw was still clenched from her ex-boyfriend's arrival, and from the moment he met the guy a few weeks after starting work at the company, he knew the guy was up to no good. He was a bit secretive about the things he did, and Scott had a sneaking suspicion the guy was hiding something from Gina. However, it was not his job to pry so he kept away from the guy, up until one day his boss told him her boyfriend had disappeared. He had been there when the guy suddenly left Gina, a few days before her birthday, and he had watched her silently suffer through the heartbreak. Now, he was back like he had never left, and wanting to reconcile. Scott hoped she would refuse him, but the faraway look on her eyes immediately they entered the Range Rover said otherwise. He gritted his teeth and focused on looking forward, even as his eyes occasionally strayed towards her face in the rear mirror. A few strands of her hair were fallen over her face and her large brown eyes were unfocused and glazed, as she fought hard to keep them open. He subtly smiled and shook his head once, the urge to flick her hair backward growing in him. He had always advised her not to work so much, but she was bent on keeping her father's legacy alive, even when she burned out easily. He admired her courage and resilience, as well as her resolve to not let anything stop her including her stepmother's threats. He could only hope she had the strength to move past that guy. When the driver got to her flat, Scott got out and opened the door for her while he carried out all her things. She smiled at him gratefully and opened the door to her fully furnished apartment and let him come in after her to drop her things. When he was done, she thanked him and told him about an online meeting she needed him to be present for, and Scott instantly faltered and shook his head. He wouldn't be able to make it to her house once it was past six pm. Gina glared at him for a second, but when he matched her gaze and refused to back down, she sighed and turned away from him. At that moment, she considered telling him to teach her some defensive moves but decided against it. The guy easily did everything for her, with or without her asking, and surely he must have a good reason for not being available at night. Suddenly she blurted out, "Do you work another job at night?" He instantly nodded his head at her question and told her he worked for some relatives and he couldn't skip a day off. Understandably, she nodded and bid him good night. Scott turned to leave, but paused and looked back at her, "Gina, I know this isn't any of my business, but be careful about Dave. He's not trustworthy." She looked at him, a dazed expression on her face before she masked it with a blank stare. "Right, it's none of your business." He simply nodded once and walked out of her house, and she collapsed further onto the chair. Maybe she was too harsh. She got up and moved towards the door, but the sound of the car fading away stopped her in her tracks and she sighed. She relaxed for a moment longer, and then proceeded further into her house, stepping out of her clothes immediately after she got to her room. She sank into her hot tub and relaxed fully, as she tried to destress and get her thoughts into check. Within minutes, she was already asleep and by the time she instantly woke up with a start, her head was halfway submerged under the water. She quickly stepped out of the tub and toweled herself before she finally rushed out of the bathroom. As she was putting on her sleep clothes, her iPhone pinged and she opened it to see a text from Dave. I miss you, the message read and she smiled involuntarily for a second before she straightened her face and dropped the phone. The guy had no right to crash back into her life so suddenly, and without warning, but she couldn't help the other part of her that was pleased with his arrival. There was no need in denying the fact that she missed him and that seeing his blue eyes had melted a part of her heart, and brought back the uncountable memories she made over the years. She picked up her phone again and reread the message, over and over again, while pacing back and forth in her large room as she debated whether to respond or not. Finally, she sank to her bed in defeat and began to type, her heart fluttering when she saw that he was online. She was not the kind of girl to shy away from doing things that pleased her, and if talking to Dave made her less lonely and excited, then she'd do it. In less than three seconds, he had responded to her message and she fell back on her bed, grinning from ear to ear. The next day, Gina skipped work and told her secretary to direct any important documents and meetings to her home office so she could attend to them from there. Gina allowed Dave to move even closer to her and tuck her hair behind her ears, as he leaned forward and brushed his lips against hers. A tingle ran down her back at the familiar sensation and she just managed to stop herself further into the kiss. She wanted more, but she also wanted him to have a bit of a hard time so she reluctantly drew back and folded her arms again. "Fine. I accept, but that doesn't mean I've forgiven you...yet." Even as she said it, there was a soft smile on her face and Dave knew she was his' again.
