Anna woke up the next day and the first thing that crossed her mind was the wolf. She turned to her side but he was not there. She searched across the room with her eyes but he was nowhere to be found.
There was a familiar smell in the air. It smelled like eggs, fried eggs. Anna jumped off the bed in quick succession. She ran to the living room to see the wolf seated on the dining table with a plate of fried eggs and bread.
He turned to her when he noticed her standing behind him. There was this look he had that made her wonder what sort of dog he was.
“Who made this?”, Anna asked with a questioning look. He looked at her and sort of rolled his eyes. Anna looked at the table to see a well covered plate, right where she kept her dinner the other night.
“What's that?”, she asked with interest as she walked over to the other end of the table. There was a perfectly covered plate of toasted bread with fried eggs well placed for her.
Anna was transfixed. She turned to the wolf, and then to the food.
“Hey! Who did this?”, she asked but got no reply. She tiptoed to the kitchen but there was nobody there. She checked all the rooms but couldn't find anyone other than her and the wolf.
“Look here, I don't know what you are, but you're not going to play games with me. I ain't eating that.”, she pushed the plate away from hee.
The wolf looked at her with no care of the world. He jumped on the table and ate her food. Anna looked bewildered. She had never seen an animal so proud and bossy in her life.
The rest of the day was tough for Anna. She cleaned the glasses, windows, the dishes, all the tables, and mopped everywhere. Then she went outside to take care of the dried leaves that had fallen around.
But first, She had to cut down the tree branches which stretched too close to the house with a power saw.
The wolf sat on the front porch, looking at her as she struggled with the heavy logs. She tried lifting them up but they were too heavy for her to carry. She also tried dragging them across but it still didn't work. She tried the third time but slipped and fell to the ground which made her the more frustrated.
“Since you're so smart of an animal, isn't there a way you could help me over here?”, Anna asked as she struggled with her breathing.
The wolf brought a rope with his mouth and offered it to Anna. She gave him a confused look. He gestured to his neck with his right paw.
“You want me to tie the rope around your neck?”, she asked. The wolf nodded it's head.
“Okay then”, Anna wasn't surprised that much anymore. An animal who could make breakfast was quite a sight.
She tied the rope around the wolf's neck and tied it to the log. He effortlessly dragged the log across the dried grass all the way into the bushes.
Anna was surprised. How could an animal possess such incredible strength? He gestured for her to untie the rope from the log and they repeated the same thing with another log of wood until all the logs were cleared off from the path.
Their bond became stronger with every passing day. Although he never ceased to draw his boundaries, Anna too didn't cease to care for him.
They did things together, played together, watched movies together and many other things. He became more than a wolf to him, he became her friend.
Becky would always come around to check on her. Whenever she came, she'd never cease to be surprised at how smart an animal could get. By this time, his wounds were already healed and he was at his strongest.
Anna had contacted a buyer who came all the way from New York and was willing to purchase her car. On her way back, the two decided to have a walk home. Although the distance was quite long, she didn't mind because The wolf was right beside her.
The two had a long conversation. For the people who passed her, it was weird to see her talk to an animal as if it were a human being. But for Anna, she knew that he understood every bit of what she said.
It was getting darker and by this time Anna was already tired. She decided to give it a rest. Ashwood was a town with several mysterious stories of people getting missing but over the years, the town had experienced a peaceful tranquil.
With this, Anna wasn't scared of the dark. She was still talking with the wolf when he suddenly paused. His ears swayed from side to side in an attempt to detect which point whatever sound he heard was coming from.
He gestured for them to leave but Anna was too tired to walk again. She regretted taking the walk home. He tried dragging the hem of her cloth but Anna smacked him on the face.
There were faint growls coming from the darkness. Anna could see dark figures stalking them. They were like sitting ducks waiting to be prayed upon by wild wolves.
One of the dark figures decided to come out into the light. It was a wolf just like the one she was with. His eyes shined bright red with long fangs sticking out of his gnashed teeth.
Anna froze at the spot. There were many wolves that had surrounded them, closing in on them as they stalked from all angles.
Anna's wolf began growling back at them. It seemed like they were more interested in him than in her. He held his ground as more and more came out into the light.
“Get away! Go! Get away!! “, Anna tried chasing them off but unfortunately one decided to turn its attention to her. He was larger than the rest with visible claws and black eyes that spelt death.
Anna's wolf got in between him and Anna, protecting her as he faced the wolves. For a second It seemed like they were communicating but all of a sudden the wolf with dark eyes pounced on Anna's wolf while the rest watched closely.
He slashed Anna's wolf in the face and bit down hard on his neck. Anna's wolf struggled to break free for some seconds before twisting himself so that he was laying down on his back and the other wolf was atop him. He used his legs to kick the attacker off him—sending him crashing into the rest of the wolves.
Anna was scared and helpless. She tried escaping but the other wolves had formed a circle, entrapping them at the center. She was forced to watch the two wild beasts battle for life.
Anna's wolf made a quick leap into the air and with his claws, he slapped the other wolf on the face. His claws pierced into his black eyes—causing him to whimper in pain.
Anna's wolf turned to me and gave me a knowing look. Although she couldn't communicate with him, anyone in that situation would know that he wanted her to run.
The other wolves pounced on him and the s*******r was on. The circle was now broken and Anna seized the opportunity. She ran as fast as her human legs could carry.
She bursted into the driveway panting heavily. A truck driver was passing just in time. She yelled and waved her hands frantically as the truck came to a stop and she ran in.
“Drive!”, she yelled at the man who responded immediately without asking questions. He slammed on the accelerator and drove off in full thrust.
