Chapter 3

Anna walked around the supermarket with a basket in hand. She had come to the town's supermarket to get a few things she needed to begin her new life. Her eyes were still searching through the different groceries when she mistakenly bumped into someone, causing her basket to fall on the floor. “Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry.”, The brown skinned lady apologized as they desperately tried to pack up the mess she had caused. “Hey! It's okay. I was just too fixed on the groceries that I didn't see you coming “, Anna apologized. “Here, let me help you pay for that “, she offered to pay for the eggs which broke inside the plastic bags they were in. “Na'ah! It's okay. I'll handle it.” Anna replied politely. “I see you've got some pet items in your bag. Do you have a pet? “, she asked with a smile that complimented her beautiful round face. She had her hair tied up in a bun which sat behind her head. Anna returned the smile. “Yeah! I mean, No!, well… “, she paused for a second “yeah! I got one—a dog” “Oh! Okay. You seemed to be uncertain at some point. I'm so sorry if I am being too nosey”, she asked. “N.. No”, Anna replied with a weak laugh, “it's just that I am new here and…” Anna was cut short by the lady. “Oh I'm sorry! . I think that's why I couldn't recognize your face. I mean, I'm quite familiar with the people around here. Being a nurse means that you've got to create some bond with your patients.” the lady said. “Oh yeah. Of course” Anna replied with uncertainty. “Okay. My name is Becky. I'm a nurse here in Ashwood.”, Becky said as she stretched out her arm for a handshake which Anna took. “I'm Anna, Anna Lester.”, Anna replied. “Anna Lester? Are you related to Silvia Lester, the old lady that died two days ago?” “Yeah! You know her?”, Anna asked with a raised brow. “Of course I do! . She was the kindest woman I knew. I'm so sorry about your loss”, Becky said and gave Anna a friendly hug. “It's okay. It's all in the past now.” They both walked over to the counter and paid for their stuff. Anna and Becky got along quite well. Becky told her all about Ashwood while Anna in turn told her about New York. “Do you know any Veterinary doctor around here?”, Anna asked. “Na'ah. We ain't got that kind of development here. Your pet’s sick?”, Becky asked. “Well, here's the thing. I met a dog inside my house while I was packing in this morning. It looked really injured so I tried to stop the wound. But I still feel that it's not enough.”, Anna said with concern in her voice. “Well! That's unusual.”,Becky replied. “I know we just met, but is there a possibility of helping me? I mean, you might know a thing or two since you're a nurse”, Anna begged. Becky gave it a thought for sometime before agreeing to help Anna. They both got into Anna’s car and she took her home. “I'm sorry about the mess outside here. I haven't had the time to clean up since I got here.” Anna apologized. “I understand. I could eventually come around if you needed any assistance”, Becky offered, “besides, your place is so nice” “Thank you. It's my grandma's doing." They both got inside the house. Anna went inside the room and there was the dog. He still laid at the exact spot Anna left him. Picking up the dog was quite a challenge because of how heavy he was, but Anna wasn't going to give up. She brought him to the living room where Becky sat. As soon as Becky saw the dog she screamed in shock. “Oh my goodness Anna! That's a wolf!”, Becky screamed as she stepped away from the dog. “What?”, Anna jerked in surprise. “You had a wild animal in your custody all this while. What if it attacked you?”, Becky yelled. “Calm down Becky. I don't think it's aggressive” Anna said in defense. The wolf looked at Anna pitifully as he whimpered again in pain. “You gotta help him. Please..” Anna begged. “Okay! Okay!!. I'll help you” Becky said. She gently approached the wolf which laid on the table. It growled at her, exposing his long fangs as a warning. “It seems like you're the only person he trusts here, so you're gonna help me tie it's mouth so that I can check the wounds.” Becky suggested. Anna tried to tie the wolf's mouth but it was resistant. It shook its head violently whenever Anna came close. “Wow! Now that's the first one. It seems like it totally understands what we say.” Becky said in amazement. “Yeah, I noticed that too. I think he grew up with a human. That should explain his high sense of understanding.” Anna added. “I always thought wolves to be so dumb.” Becky said. The wolf looked at her with anger. He kicked the flower vase with his front legs. It went crashing down on Becky's toes. Becky yelped in pain as Anna tried to hide her laughter. The two looked at the wolf who looked back at them with a smile. “That's one hell of a smart wolf laying down there.” Becky said. “Okay then wolf, since you understand human language so well, let me tell you this, I'm here to help you with your wounds so it's either you calm down and let me do what I can, or you continue whimpering till you die, understood?” The wolf looked at Becky with no reaction. “If you understand a word I just said then raise a hand”, Becky commanded. The wolf looked at her with less emotion. “Alright then. Seems like he's gonna have to…”, Becky was talking to Anna when the wolf slowly raised its foreleg up. The two ladies were surprised as a wolf could be so intelligent. “Alright then. It seems like someone's finally laid down his pride”, Becky said in victory. *** The sun had gone down when Anna finished cooking dinner. She made her grandma's delicacy—native soup made with mushrooms and basil leaves just to honor her. She sat down in the dining room and was about to eat when the wolf leaped towards her with his bandaged leg and lower back. “You hungry? That's alright. It's a good thing I got something from the supermarket for you”, Anna said. She went inside and returned with a dog bowl and some dog food. The wolf tilted his head to one direction as he sat and watched her. Anna poured the dog food into the bowl and shifted it towards the wolf. He looked at the food and then to Anna, and then to the food again. “Come on. Eat. Try it out!”, Anna repeated but the wolf looked at her with no reaction. He suddenly jumped to his feet, he leaped on top of the dinning chair, and then on the table. “Hey wait! That's my food”, Anna yelled. She tried to stop him but when she came closer, he growled at her with fury. Anna paused. She watched as he laid on his belly and fed on her soup till nothing was on the plate. He turned to the glass filled with water and lapped on it to his fill. When he was done, he turned to Anna who was transfixed on him. He looked at her for a second, he jumped down to the floor and walked away. “What the hell was that?” Anna yelled at the wolf but he ignored her and went inside her room. She decided to let it slide since she had more soup in the kitchen. When she was done, she went into the room and to her greatest surprise, the wolf was laying right at the center of her bed. “You know you're not supposed to be there, right?”, she said. He responded with a wag of his tail and continued his sleep. “Look, just because you're wild and dangerous doesn't mean you get to boss me in my own house”, Anna hissed at him. He opened his eyes to her, exhaled deeply and continued his sleep. Anna picked up a mopstick. She wasn't going to let a strange animal mess up her life. She approached the wolf and poked him on the head. He looked up to her with bright yellow eyes that reminded her of Kyle, only that he was twice brighter. “Look here. I don't know who trained you to be this way, but you gotta know that if you want to stay with me then you gotta behave yourself. Get your fur body out of my bed”, she yelled out in frustration. It took a millisecond before Anna could realize that she was on the floor and the wolf on top of her. He looked her squarely in the eyes, exposing his fangs which stuck out of his mouth like knives. His claws pierced through her cloth and almost pierced her skin, which was some sort of last warning. Anna lay helplessly on the floor. She was vulnerable to him at the moment. His eyes seemed to die down as his heavy breaths calmed. He got off her and went back to the bed, but this time he laid on one end.
