Romão
The rooster crowed earlier today, the sun hadn't even risen. The cold morning wind ruffled the hairs on my arms as I opened my bedroom window, hoping to see the sun come up. Today was not an ordinary day. The clouds covered the entire sky, some rays of sunlight passed through the clouds, wanting to brighten the day, but it seemed that today would not be a very happy day.
I went to the bathroom, peed, washed my hands and brushed my teeth. I wet my face with water to wake up and went down to breakfast. Marta was setting the table, the workers were already drinking their coffee, Cidinha helped Marta to make the fruit available to the staff, but Mom and Dad hadn't come down yet. I sat down with everyone at the table, greeted everyone and served myself.
"Good morning, Romao!" Cidinha greeted me with a smile.
"Good morning, Cidinha! Shouldn't you study in the city?"
"It's a holiday in town, college doesn't work. I have four days at home."
"Ah, but here there's no excuse not to work, you're going to help Marta in the garden and think of a way to make those rabbits stop eating our crops." I bit into my bread with bologna.
"Make them a stew."
"For that, you need to get them first, these bastards are very smart."
"Why don't you set traps to catch those naughty ones?"
"Today I have to leave, Dad wants me to help him run the grocery store, I need someone I can trust to take care of the farm." I took a sip of my coffee.
"You'll finally get out of this end of the world, I'm sure you'll like the city. Then, who knows, you can move there, we might even get married." I choked on my latte.
The workers looked at me with a crooked smile on their faces.
"I already told you that to me you are like a sister and not a wife."
“I know, but I know you can change your mind,” she said, getting up from the table and heading into the kitchen with her plate.
I looked at the farm workers and they were laughing.
"What's this? If they've finished their coffee? "Start" work."
They left one by one to start the day's work.
Mom and Dad appeared in the farm's cafeteria, they greeted me with a kiss on the cheek, Mom sat beside me, and Dad sat at the end of the table.
"So son, have you thought about who you're going to call to run the farm?" asked dad.
"I thought about Jorge, he's good with animals."
"I agree, he's also a good person, as well as being trustworthy."
“Are you sure you need to travel today? It seems that the day will not be the best" - Mom said worried.
"I agree with her, I woke up with a bad feeling," she said, worrying about Dad too.
"I'll only take a few hours by car, I'll be home tonight. I promise."
"If you don't come home to me, I swear I'll hit you with a horse whip." I've been beaten a lot with this whip.
“You know I love it when you go crazy.” OK! That's a lot of information.
"I think it's time for me to leave." I went to my dad and kissed his forehead. "Until tonight, Dad, be careful on the way."
"Until tonight!"
“I beat” retreating and retrieved my cart that I had left in the stable. I went to Jorge's house to ask him to work with me. Jorge was twenty-eight years old, dark, with brown hair and eyes, six feet tall, he liked to do his goatee to get the girls' attention, or rather, Cidinha's. Although I liked to get my beard big, I rarely shaved.
Jorge was in love with Cidinha, but she didn't even give a clue. I think he'll agree to work for me, just to be close to Cidinha.
"Romão! What a surprise to see you here," he said excitedly.
"I came to see if you want to work on the farm?"
"It depends... Will I be able to see Cidinha every day?"
“You know she goes to college in town, but she's at the farm every weekend. Today is a municipal holiday and she will be staying at home for four days, starting today."
"Really? And you guys aren't…dating?"
"No! You know I see you as a sister."
"But you guys already dated."
He was sad when Cidinha and I were together.
"This should never have happened, but now that she's single, it's your chance."
"When do I start?" he asked rubbing his hands.
"If you can, today."
"It's closed! I'll get ready and meet you at the farm."
"Okay see you over there."
I left Jorge's house and went back to the farm, put away my cart, paid for my horse called Ferrari, went to the corral to take care of my cattle and take them to the pasture.
