The Man Beside My Bed
The first thing Elena noticed was the smell. Antiseptic. Sharp. Clean. Unforgiving. It burned her nose as consciousness dragged her upward from darkness. A soft beeping sound echoed nearby. Beep. Beep. Beep. Pain exploded behind her eyes. Elena groaned and immediately regretted it. Every muscle in her body ached. Her head felt as if someone had driven nails through her skull. She tried to move her hand. Something warm grabbed it. Instantly. Almost desperately. "Elena." A man's voice. Deep. Relieved. Emotional. Her eyelids fluttered open. White ceiling. Bright lights. Hospital. The realization came slowly. Then panic followed. She turned her head and saw him. A man sat beside her bed. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair. A perfectly tailored black suit despite the obvious exhaustion in his face. His jaw was covered in stubble. Dark circles shadowed his eyes. As if he hadn't slept for days. The moment their gazes met, something broke inside him. Relief flooded his features. "Thank God." His voice cracked. He squeezed her hand. "You're awake." Elena stared. She didn't know him. Not even a little. Fear prickled through her chest. "Who are you?" The question hung between them. The man's face froze. His expression shattered. "What?" Elena pulled her hand away. "Who are you?" A horrible silence filled the room. Then the door burst open. Doctors rushed inside. Nurses followed. Machines beeped faster. "What happened?" The doctor moved toward her. Elena pointed at the stranger. "Who is he?" The room went still. The doctor's eyes widened. The nurses exchanged glances. The man looked like someone had punched him. "Mrs. Blackwood," the doctor said carefully. "Do you know your name?" Elena swallowed. "Elena." "Your full name?" "Elena Hart." Another glance passed between the medical staff. The doctor nodded slowly. "I see." The stranger stood motionless. Like a statue. Like a man watching his entire world collapse. The doctor turned to him. "Mr. Blackwood, perhaps you should wait outside." Mr. Blackwood? The stranger didn't move. His eyes remained locked on Elena. Then, after several painful seconds, he nodded. Without a word, he walked out. The door closed behind him. Only then did Elena realize her heart was racing. The doctor began asking questions. Date. Age. Family. Childhood. School. Everything. She answered easily. Until he asked about the last two years. Then nothing came. Blank. Empty. Gone. No memories. No faces. No events. Nothing. Fear spread through her chest. "What happened to me?" The doctor sighed. "You were involved in a serious car accident." Elena frowned. "How long have I been unconscious?" "Three days." Three days. Not years. Three days. Then why couldn't she remember anything? The doctor's expression softened. "You appear to be suffering from retrograde amnesia." The words sounded terrifying. "What does that mean?" "It means you've lost memories from before the accident." "How much?" The doctor hesitated. "Approximately two years." Elena felt sick. Two years. Two entire years erased. Gone. As though they had never existed. And somehow that stranger outside— Mr. Blackwood— was involved. The doctor finished his examination. "You should rest." Before leaving, he paused. "There's something else." Elena looked up. The doctor's voice lowered. "Adrian Blackwood is your husband." The world stopped. "What?" The doctor nodded. "You've been married for eighteen months." "No." The answer escaped instantly. Certain. Firm. Impossible. "No." "Mrs. Blackwood—" "No." Elena shook her head. "You're wrong." The doctor looked sympathetic. "Your records confirm it." "No." Because she would remember. Wouldn't she? A husband? A wedding? Falling in love? She would remember. Wouldn't she? The doctor left. The room became silent. Elena stared at the ceiling. Married. The word echoed endlessly. Married. Impossible. She remembered college. Her first apartment. Her old job. Her best friend Lily. Her parents. Everything. Up until two years ago. Then darkness. A missing piece of her life. A hole she couldn't fill. The door opened again. Elena immediately turned. The stranger returned. Adrian Blackwood. Her husband. Apparently. He walked in slowly. Carefully. Like approaching a wounded animal. Neither spoke. For several moments they simply stared at each other. Then Adrian pulled a chair closer. "How much do you remember?" His voice was calm. Controlled. Too controlled. Elena folded her arms. "Nothing about you." The words hit him hard. She saw it. The slight tightening of his jaw. The flicker of pain. But it disappeared quickly. "Nothing?" She shook her head. "No." Silence. Then Adrian nodded. "Okay." Okay? That was it? No anger. No frustration. No accusations. Just okay. Which somehow made her even more nervous. He studied her carefully. "As long as you're alive." The words were barely above a whisper. Elena looked away. Something about his gaze unsettled her. Not because it was threatening. Because it was full of emotion. Real emotion. The kind impossible to fake. As if he genuinely cared. As if losing her had nearly destroyed him. But how? She didn't know him. "Can I see our wedding photos?" The question slipped out. Adrian blinked. Then reached into his pocket. He unlocked his phone. A few taps later he handed it over. Elena stared at the screen. A wedding photograph. Her breath caught. It was her. Definitely her. Wearing a white dress. Smiling. Standing beside Adrian. A massive diamond ring sparkled on her finger. The image looked real. Not edited. Not fake. Real. Her stomach twisted. Another photo. Another. And another. Wedding reception. First dance. Cake cutting. Kissing. Laughing. Happy. So happy. Elena couldn't understand it. The woman in those photos looked deeply in love. But she felt nothing. No memory. No connection. No recognition. Just emptiness. She handed the phone back. Her hands trembled. "I don't remember any of it." Adrian looked down. For the first time, he seemed vulnerable. Almost broken. "I know." The room fell silent again. Then Elena noticed something. A bruise. Dark purple. Across his knuckles. Another near his temple. Fresh injuries. "What happened to you?" Adrian glanced at the bruise. "Nothing." "That doesn't look like nothing." "It's not important." His answer came too quickly. Like a lie. Elena narrowed her eyes. Before she could ask more, a nurse entered. "Visiting hours are ending." Adrian stood immediately. "I'll come back tomorrow." Elena hesitated. "Wait." He stopped. Something felt wrong. Incomplete. "Do I have family?" "Your parents are flying in." She nodded. "And friends?" A strange expression crossed his face. "Yes." "Will they visit?" "Eventually." Eventually? What did that mean? Before she could ask, his phone rang. Adrian glanced at the screen. His expression darkened instantly. Cold. Dangerous. Completely different from before. The change shocked her. For a second, he looked like a stranger. A powerful one. Someone accustomed to giving orders. Someone people feared. He rejected the call. Then slipped the phone away. "Get some rest." Without another word, he left. The door closed. Elena stared after him. Questions multiplied in her mind. Who was Adrian Blackwood? Why couldn't she remember him? And why had his phone call changed his entire expression? Hours passed. Night settled outside. The hospital became quiet. Most patients slept. Elena couldn't. Every time she closed her eyes, anxiety returned. Two years. Gone. Completely gone. Around midnight, exhaustion finally began pulling her toward sleep. Then something vibrated. Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. Her eyes opened. A phone. On the bedside table. The hospital had placed her belongings there. She reached for it. Her hands shook. The screen lit up. One new message. Unknown Number. Elena frowned. Then opened it. The message contained only six words. Her blood turned cold. DON'T TRUST YOUR HUSBAND. She froze. A second message arrived. Buzz. HE'S LYING TO YOU. Elena's heart slammed against her ribs. Her fingers trembled. Another message appeared. Buzz. THE ACCIDENT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT. Fear flooded her body. She stared at the screen. Unable to breathe. Unable to think. Then the hospital room door slowly creaked open. Elena looked up. A shadow stood in the doorway. Watching her. And in the darkness, she couldn't tell who it was.
