Lena's POV
“What?”
The word left Liam's lips in disbelief, and my heart hammering as the silence in the room thickened. Everyone was staring, their eyes wide with shock, jaws open. But my focus was entirely on Liam, the man I’d dreamed of, the one I had believed was meant for me.
“What the f**k are you talking about?” Liam’s disdainful voice suddenly shattered the silence, venom dripping from every word. His sharp tone was like a slap to my face.
“I… I said you’re my mate.” I stammered, my voice trembling as I clung to the hope that this was a misunderstanding. That I was hearing things and Liam wasn't staring at me like someone whom he wanted to kill.
Liam laughed, a cold, cruel sound that pierced my chest, “Who the hell do you think you are?” He sneered, his green eyes blazing with anger, “Me? Your mate? Are you out of your mind?”
My knees felt weak, but I forced myself to stand firm, “I… I’m not lying. I felt the bond, Liam. You did too…”
“Shut up.” He snapped, his words cutting me off like a blade, “Don’t ever say that again. You disgust me.”
My breath hitched as the weight of his words sank in, “Liam… Why are you saying this? You’ve always been kind to me so I thought that…”
“Kind?” He scoffed, running a hand through his hair, “I pitied you, Lena. That’s all it was, pity. You’re nothing but a delusional girl who doesn’t know her place.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd as his words echoed in the hall. My heart shattered, the pieces scattering like shards of glass.
“But…” My voice broke, “We’re mates.”
“Enough!” Liam roared, silencing me completely. He turned to the crowd, his expression hardening, “If I have to choose between her and anyone else, I’d rather take Celeste as my Luna. I reject Lena as my mate! We will never be together!”
I froze. Celeste… My twin.
Liam’s gaze flicked to her, and she stepped forward, her lips curling into a smug smile, “Well…” Celeste said, her voice dripping with false sweetness, “It’s no wonder the Moon Goddess made a mistake. Someone like Lena doesn’t deserve a mate, let alone someone like you, Liam.”
The room erupted into laughter, their mocking voices blending into an echo of humiliation. My vision blurred with tears, but I refused to let them fall. Not here. Not in front of them.
“You’re pathetic.” Liam added, his voice low and icy, “Get out of my sight.”
I couldn’t breathe. The walls felt like they were closing in, the weight of their ridicule and laughter continued to suffocate me. Without another word, I turned and fled, my feet carrying me out of the hall and into the cold night air.
I don’t know how far I ran, I didn't even know where I ran to but suddenly, memories began to rush into my head, ones that I had desperately wanted to forget.
Celeste and I had always been close, or so I thought. We were twins, inseparable from birth. But everything changed the day our uncle moved in.
He was cruel, his presence suffocating our home with fear. He abused us, his anger relentless and his punishments severe. I endured it in silence, but Celeste fought back.
One night, she snapped. Our uncle had hit her harder than usual, and Celeste couldn’t take it anymore. She attacked him, rage fueling her every move. By the time it was over, he was dead.
We thought we could hide it, that no one would find out, but someone saw her.
When the Alpha summoned us, the witness claimed I was the one who killed him just because Celeste and I looked so alike. Celeste begged me to take the blame, her tearful plea echoing in my mind even now.
“Please, Lena.” She whispered, clutching my hands, “If they know it was me, they’ll kill me. Please don’t ruin my life. I’m begging you.”
I hesitated, but only for a moment. She was my sister, my twin. How could I let her suffer?
So, I confessed. I told the Alpha it was self-defense, but it didn’t matter. Killing a relative was an unforgivable crime. I was stripped of my rank, my dignity, my life. From a proud beta’s daughter, I became an omega, a servant, a slave. My family abandoned me. My friends turned their backs on me. Even Celeste, the sister I had sacrificed everything for, pretended I didn’t exist.
The memories tore through me as I stumbled through the dark streets like a drunk person. I ran for a while, then I decided to go to the pack house, I was shaking, my tears blinding me. Whispers followed me wherever I went because the news of my humiliation had already spread, and the pack wolves didn’t hesitate to remind me of my place.
“Look, it’s the rejected mate.”
“Did you really think Liam would want someone like you?”
“Maybe the Moon Goddess was drunk when she picked you.”
Their laughter haunted me everywhere I went and by the time I got to the pack house that evening, the sun had disappeared, casting long shadows over the grounds. I tried to sneak inside, but two guards stopped me.
“The Alpha wants to see you.” One of them said, his tone cold.
Fear coiled in my stomach as they dragged me to the dungeons, “Wait… What are you doing? Let me go! Let me go! Why are you bringing me here??” The air was damp and cold, the smell of blood and despair thick.
“Stop! Stop it! I didn't do anything wrong!” When they chained me to the wall, I didn’t fight back. I didn’t have the strength, I could only scream and cry.
“The Alpha said to show her her place. Hit her!” One of the men who chained me to the wall barked loudly. Before I could beg for mercy, the first lash of the whip tore through my shirt, slicing into my skin. I couldn't help it, the pain shot through my spine, tingling all the way to my body. My scream echoed in the dark and smelly dungeon, my body shuddering.
“This is what happens…” The Alpha’s enforcer growled, his voice, “When an omega forgets her place.”
