The Contract
The envelope on my kitchen table had blood on it. Not mine. Daniel's. I knew before I touched it. I could smell it. Copper and fear and something else I didn't want to name. My 19 year old brother has been gambling again. And when Daniel gambles, people bleed. Last time it was his lip. He came home at 3AM with it split open and a story about falling down the stairs. The time before that it was three ribs and a hospital bill that took me 8 months to pay off. I work as an ER nurse. I know what a beating looks like. The paper inside the envelope was thick. Expensive. It felt wrong. Too smooth. Like it came from somewhere I would never be allowed to go. "Five million dollars," it said in black print. "Pay in 48 hours, or we take the boy." No signature. Just a black wolf stamp at the bottom. Pressed deep into the paper like a brand. The Moretti Family. I had to sit down. Right there on the cold linoleum floor. My back against the cabinet. Five million dollars. I make $2,400 a month at City General. After rent, after Daniel's phone bill, after groceries and gas and the payment on mom's headstone, I have maybe 200 dollars left. I would have to work 173 years to pay that. I would have to never eat. Never sleep. Never get sick. 173 years. I would be dead ten times over. "Daniel," I whispered to the empty kitchen. "What did you do this time." He promised me last month. He got on his knees in this same kitchen and swore on mom's grave. After the last loan shark. After I sold my car for 50k. After I picked up night shifts and weekend shifts and barely slept for three weeks straight. "No more gambling, Sera. I'm clean. I'm done. I promise. I swear to God." Liar. He's always been my problem. Since I was 19 and mom died of cancer. Since dad left when we were kids and never looked back. I raised him. I put him through high school. I paid for his community college classes that he dropped out of after one semester. And this is how he repays me. My phone buzzed on the table. It made me jump. Unknown number. I stared at it. Part of me wanted to throw it in the trash. Part of me wanted to pretend I never saw the letter. Pretend Daniel could handle this himself. He couldn't. I answered on the third ring. "Miss Hale," a man's voice said. Deep. Calm. Like he was discussing the weather. Like he wasn't threatening to kill my brother. "This is Alessandro Moretti. We need to discuss your brother's debt." My throat went dry. "I don't know what you are talking about." "48 hours, Miss Hale," he said. No greeting. No small talk. "Come to Moretti Tower. Penthouse. 8PM. Alone. If you bring police, Daniel loses a finger for every siren I hear. If you don't show, he loses his life." Click. The line went dead. I sat there for ten minutes. Maybe longer. My scrubs were still on from my night shift. There was blood on my sleeve. A patient's blood. A 6 year old kid who got hit by a car. I held his hand while he cried for his mom. Now this. I didn't have a choice. I never had a choice. Not since I was 19 and the doctors said mom had 6 months. --- Moretti Tower took up an entire block downtown. 65 floors of glass and steel. The kind of building where the lobby has marble floors and fountains and security guards who don't smile. The kind of place where people like me look out of place. My coat was second hand. My shoes were from Target. I had dark circles under my eyes from 12 hour shifts. "Name," the guard at the front desk said without looking up. "Seraphina Hale." He typed something. Nodded once. "Penthouse. Elevator B." Elevator B needed a keycard. The doors opened by themselves when I got close. Like the building already knew I was coming. Like it was expecting me. The ride up was silent. 65 floors. My reflection in the gold doors looked bad. Pale. Scared. 24 years old and about to make a deal with the devil. The doors opened right into the penthouse. It was huge. Floor to ceiling windows. City lights for miles. White furniture. Art on the walls that probably cost more than my hospital. And there he was. Alessandro Moretti. 32. At least six foot three. Black suit tailored so perfectly it probably cost more than my student loans. Black hair. Black eyes. Sharp jaw. He looked expensive. He looked dangerous. He looked like the kind of man who ruins women and doesn't lose sleep over it. He was standing by the windows with his back to me. Hands in his pockets. He didn't turn when I came in. "Miss Hale," he said. "You're late." "I took two buses," I said. My voice sounded small. He held up a hand. I shut up immediately. Something about him made it impossible to argue. It wasn't loud. It was worse. It was absolute. He finally turned. And those eyes. God. Black. Empty. Like he was cataloging every fear I had and putting it in a file. He walked to a big desk and picked up a folder. My folder. Photos of me leaving the hospital. Daniel at the casino. Our crappy apartment building. Our mom's grave. Bank statements. My credit score. He knew everything. Every secret. Every shame. "Your brother owes my family five million dollars," he said. He didn't sit. He circled me instead. Slow. Like a shark. "He lost it in three nights at the Sapphire. Cards. Then he tried to double down to win it back." "I can get a loan," I said. Even I didn't believe it. "No, you can't." He stopped in front of me. I had to crane my neck to look up at him. He smelled like cedar and something expensive I couldn't name. "No bank will touch you. Not with the Moretti name attached to the debt. You are blacklisted." He was right. And he knew I knew he was right. That's what made it worse. "So what do you want," I asked. I tried to keep my voice steady. Tried to sound strong. "You." The word hung in the air between us. Heavy. He walked back to the desk and picked up a document. Thick. Bound in black leather. "Marry me, Seraphina." I laughed. It came out hysterical and broken and too loud in the quiet room. "Excuse me." "A contract marriage. One year." He ticked points off on his fingers. Cold. Clinical. "You attend events as my wife. You smile. You play the part. You live in my house. And in bed, if I ask." My face went hot. "I'm not a" "Prostitute?" He finished for me. That ghost of a smile. It didn't reach his eyes. "No. You are leverage. You are collateral. You are a solution to a problem." He slid the contract across the desk. I didn't touch it. My hands were fists at my sides. "In exchange," he continued, "I erase Daniel's debt. I give him a job in one of my companies. Something he can't gamble away. I keep him alive. I keep you safe." He leaned forward then. Both hands on the desk. I could see the faint scar on his knuckles. "Sign, Seraphina. Or in 48 hours your brother loses fingers. Then hands. Then his life. Your choice." My name. He said my name like he owned it already. I stared at the paper. One year of my life. For Daniel's. My brother was an i***t. A selfish, reckless, gambling i***t. But he was still my brother. He was all I had left. The only family I had. I thought about mom. What she would say. She would tell me to walk away. To let Daniel face his choices. But Daniel was 19. And he was scared. And I was all he had. My hand shook when I picked up the pen. It was heavy. Montblanc. Cold. "One condition," I whispered. Alessandro raised a brow. Waiting. "No touching. Unless I say so." For a second, something flickered in those black eyes. Amusement. Challenge. Hunger. "Deal," he said softly. Too softly. I signed. Seraphina Hale. The moment the ink dried, he took the contract and tucked it into his inside jacket pocket. Right over his heart. "Congratulations, Mrs. Moretti," he said. "Dinner is in 30 minutes. Wear something black." I stood up, legs trembling so bad I thought I would fall. "This doesn't mean" "It means what I said it means." He was already walking away toward a hallway. "You are mine now. On paper." He paused at the door and looked back at me over his shoulder. "The question is, Mrs. Moretti. How long until you are mine in every other way." The doors closed behind him. I stood there alone in the biggest, quietest room I had ever been in. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it. I had just sold myself to the devil. And the worst part was, a small part of me, the traitorous part, wanted to know what happened next. A small part of me wanted to see if the devil was as cold as everyone said. I pulled out my phone with shaking hands. One new message. From Daniel. "Sera I'm sorry. Please help me. They said they were going to hurt me." Too late, Daniel. I already did. I looked around the penthouse one more time. This was my life now. Black suits. Black contracts. And a man with black eyes who just bought me. God help me.
