5. The weekend

Nat checked her appearance once more in front of Kerstin’s mirror. A plain old loosely fitting Jean shorts, a pair of black sneakers and a turtleneck, to top it off—a grey sweater because the weather was never friendly. One last glance and she was off running after the two girls before they ran off. They did not, she would have caught them right on time as they stopped in the corridor. Sunny was continuously jumping back on Kerstin’s back no matter how many times she pushed her off, something about being tired had been Sunny’s excuse. But it seemed Kerstin wasn’t having it at all, she wasn’t giving the girl the time of day. “No piggyback rides!” Kerstin hissed then began walking away, a whining Sunny followed suit. It seemed Kerstin spoke too soon on her earlier remark because the moment they got outside, Sunny was on her back firmly she wasn’t shaken or Kerstin had given up. She had, the way her arms securely gripped Sunny’s legs from falling, proved that there was going to be a piggyback ride. Sunny was thrilled. Happy them but not Nat at all. Once she walked out behind the two the wind harshly kept blowing strands of her hair in her face. No matter how many times she tried to fix it. She had enough. “Are you okay?” Kerstin questioned noticing how she was furiously searching her pockets for something. Kerstin couldn’t actually relate as her hair was under a cap, the wind had nothing on her. So did it have nothing on Sunny because she wore a beanie. Seemed Nat was the only one left out of the ‘hat’ party. “Yeah the wind is just so annoying.” she huffed pulling her hair into a man bun, a poor one at that but luckily her hair didn’t bother her. “You’ll get used to it.” Sunny spoke smiling lightly as she creeped her arms around Kerstin’s neck. “Lets get going girls, we have a long day!” exclaimed Kerstin with a bright smile. Picking up her motion, she began running causing Sunny to giggle and obviously Nat to jog inorder to catch up. § Petra’s weekend was uneventful, busy of course, fun at some point but tiresome. Serving customer after customer had never been a problem but apparently on a Saturday the shop got a bit more attention. Grabbing a chair from one of the tables she dropped her body into the chair, lucky enough she didn’t fall. “How is it going over there Frank ?” she asked staring over to Frank. The man smiled leaning closer to the counter. “Frankly speaking? A bit boring.” he sighed dramatically. She knew he was lying, all he did was receive cash and boss her around—according to her, he was having a blast. “I bet you are exhausted.” she said with an eye roll. “You should help me!” he proposed as though she wasn’t already. Scratch that, she wasn’t just helping she was doing his job. All the tiring, exhausting work. “I am!” “How so?” He couldn’t be serious at all and she knew that, the teasing smirk showed it. “I’m watching over you work.” she shrugged titling her head a bit. “That—” “And I am the one servicing them on their tables.” that was if it wasn’t to go but even if it was not, she was still the one handing and packing up the pastries. The only thing he did was lift one of two fingers to work the cash register. “Fine you are helping but that was twenty minutes ago!” Saved by the ring at door Petra jumped up with a wide smile. “New customers!” she sarcastically cheered. With her hand she straightened out her shirt before disappearing behind the kitchen door, Frank was left all alone. He did glare at the back of her head untill the door closed. Now he was smiling lightly at the three girls in front of him. He knew the two but not the third. “Hello guys and welcome to tiny treats. What would you like to order?” Friendly greetings and smiles were spoken between Kerstin, Sunny and Frank while Nat offered an awkward ‘hie’. It seemed following the girls around almost everyone knew them. Not really shocking but still—every shop? “Two slices of cheesecake and two doughnuts with sprinkles, Frank.” Kerstin ordered. Interlocking her hand in Sunny’s she turned to get a table but Sunny was tugging her back. “Kerstin..” the girl pouted and a sigh escaped Kerstin’s lips. “Do you still sell beverages?” she asked tiredly staring at Frank, as the girl beside her squealed. “Yes!” “What do you have now?” “Sprite, iced tea, tea (green tea, cinnamon), milkshakes, Coca-Cola. Just to mention a few.” “Two vanilla milkshakes.” “To go?” Kerstin shook her head. Turning to Nat she pointed at the empty wooden table a feet away from her. “Nat you can order now, will be over there.” Pulling Sunny by the hand they went to the table. “Do you have strudel?” Nat asked uncertain, she didn’t see it on the displayed pastries or maybe she missed it. “Yes, what type of filling?” Relief, that was what she felt as the red head confirmed the pastry of her liking was available. “Apricot? Do you have that one?” “Anything else?” “A cup of iced tea.” then she walked away to the table her friends were on. She wasn’t surprised to find Sunny on Kerstin’s lap forcefully pressing her cheek against hers, then a picture was snapped—what she would do to have that picture. Or how she kept tossing her dark hair with link highlights in her face, she was amazing at annoying the girl—she wondered how Kerstin hadn’t already snapped at her. In a week of knowing them she was sure Kerstin would bite back but the girl just slouched and closed her eyes. While behind the counter Frank pushed the door open his head peeping in. Mostly giving Petra a smirk, “What are you doing here alone, get to working happy helper!” § “Two cheesecakes, doughnuts with sprinkles and apricot filled strudel.” Frank announced placing the plates down. “Two milkshakes and an iced tea.” Petra followed his movement placing them down on the table. “Thank you!” Kerstin mumbled as she worked on passing Nat her plate and cup, and sunny hers. “Hey Petra! Business seems to be running well.” Sunny greeted her eyes noticing the renovation. The additional space now where the tables were and the additional addition of more than tea or soft drinks on the menu. “It is, all thanks to you customers.” Pulling a chair for herself as Kerstin and Sunny insisted for her to have a seat for a few minutes. She noticed Frank still standing there beside her awkward, his eyes on Nat. Petra glared at him, “Go serve the customers!” she hissed pushing the grown man away. “So how is the relationship going Kerstin and Sunny?” she asked staring between the two who happened to be feeding eachother cake. “You guys are dating?” Nat asked surprised looking up from her strudel. “Each other!” Sunny cheerfully squealed, then pecked Kerstin’s cheek who was glaring at her but blushing nevertheless. “Oh that explains the touchy touchy and sleep overs. Nice.” “Nice?” Kerstin questioned glancing at Nat curious. She didn’t know Nat well it was wrong to judge but she did judge her thinking her having a girlfriend, being queer would chase a possible friend away. Hence why she kept it away from her—the world was harsh, people were, someone could never be too cautious. With a shrug she pursed her lips. “Yes, is it not?” “Very much.” Kerstin brightly smiled. Pushing the topic aside she stared between Nat and Petra. “So this is our friend Petronella or Petra and that is my roommate Natasza but we call her Nat.” “We’ve met. I’m still really sorry by the way.” Petra spoke still offering a hand which Nat didn’t hesitate to take giving a light handshake. “Pink crop girl.” Nat mumbled noticing how Kerstin furrowed her eyebrows. “It was you?” “Gulity as charged!” Petra sheepishly smiled. There little catching was cut short as Frank called the girl over, throwing glares—that never failed. He was pouting and flapping his eyelashes once she looked over, rolling her eyes she gave the three girls a apologetic smile. “Gotta get back to work. See you on campus.” Instantly Kerstin and Sunny were lost in their own world as they began to converse. Now she understood like she was third wheeling all week, how could she tell these two weren’t an thing—they literally could not keep their hands off eachother. Intimately or teasingly.
