CHAPTER 46 NIGGLING DOUBT Carlos parked in Pedro’s driveway on Monday evening. Before getting out, he dialed Blanca’s number. For the fifth time in two days, his call went straight to her voicemail. Why wouldn’t she call him back? He called his father, only to learn his job had sent him to Sao Paolo for a number of days. Once again, his father denied knowing anything about the USB missing from the back of his mother’s journal. Finally, he rang his uncle’s doorbell. Pedro opened the door, and shrank back at seeing him. “What are you doing here at this late hour, Carlos?” He pushed his way inside. “I’m looking for Blanca. Did you hurt her because she knows the truth?” Pedro winced. “I’ve been trying to call her, too. She didn’t arrive at work today. I don’t know where she is.” Carlos
