ELLE’S POV
I heard the cry again.
Quickly, I hurried to the bathroom, stripped off my damp panties from the dream that had left me shaken, and slipped into clean ones. My pajamas clung lightly to my skin as I rushed toward the kids’ room. When I pushed the door open, the sight that greeted me stopped me short.
Lucas was already there, holding Dorcas in his arms, rubbing her back gently. His large hand looked almost fragile as it soothed our little girl.
“What happened?” I asked, my voice still breathless.
“I think she had a nightmare,” he replied softly, though his eyes flicked toward me with something sharper.
“Poor Dorcas,” I whispered, taking her carefully from his arms. I rocked her against my chest, humming low to calm her down.
