ELLE’S POV
The evening air felt heavy when I pushed open the front door, my heart still carrying the weight of the argument I’d had with Lucas earlier. Inside, I spotted Lena and Jessica waiting in the living room. Their faces brightened the moment they saw me, but mine must have betrayed the turmoil I felt.
“Hi, guys!” I forced a small smile.
Jessica hurried toward me with her usual eagerness. “Hi! Let me help you.” She reached for the stroller and pushed it inside, her hands moving with practiced care as if the twins were her own. Together, we carried them upstairs, laying Maya and Dorcas gently into their cribs. The sight of their small chests rising and falling soothed me for a moment, but the knot in my chest refused to loosen.
