The Scabies

2 Zyrella I couldn’t believe my face. This… this wasn’t me. I stared into the bathroom mirror, my hands trembling as I touched my skin. My cheek and jaw were covered with small, scabby marks. Not like pimples, and not like rashes. They were strange, almost like tiny symbols carved into me. And then I remembered what Selvik Voss had told me last night. "Beauty is delicate, young woman," he said. "I could ruin yours with one touch." I could still feel it... his thumb brushing along my cheek. That had been in my dream. At least, I thought it was a dream. But now… seeing my face like this… my stomach twisted. It looked like his words had come true. “God… I’m so ugly right now,” I whispered. Did Selvik Voss really do this to me? That’s impossible. Right? I grabbed my makeup bag and sat in front of the mirror. Concealer, foundation, powder... I layered them all, trying to hide the marks. But no matter how much I blended, the texture showed through. The scabs broke through the makeup. There's no way I could go to work tomorrow like this. So I pulled on a hoodie, put on a mask, and covered my eyes with oversized sunglasses. My face itched so badly I wanted to claw it off, but I had to cover it. The first hospital I went to ran tests... But nothing. The second hospital, the same. The doctors just looked at me with confusion, saying they’d never seen anything like it. One even muttered, “It doesn’t look… natural.” From morning until late afternoon, I went from hospital to pharmacy, collecting creams, pills, anything they would give me, but nothing worked. By the time I got home, the sun had gone down. I locked the door, threw off the hoodie, mask, and glasses… and my breath caught. It was worse. The marks were darker now, the scabs rougher, and the itching had turned into this crawling, burning sensation. “What the hell is happening to me?” I whispered, my voice cracking. My mind kept going back to Selvik. To that night. His words. His touch. His smirk. No… no, it’s impossible. He didn’t do this to me. This is just… some weird skin infection. It has to be. The doorbell rang, and my stomach growled. Right... the pizza. I opened the door, not even bothering to put the mask back on. The delivery guy froze for a second, his eyes dropping to my cheek. Then he subtly covered his nose in disgust. That’s when it hit me that I had stepped out there with my face fully exposed. My skin… does it smell? My chest tightened. I shoved the cash at him, signed the receipt quickly, and snatched the pizza box out of his hands. He couldn’t hide the way he looked at me. Is this… really from Selvik Voss? Could he have given me some kind of disease? But how? We didn’t even... Unless… that night wasn’t a dream. I sat on the couch, eating a slice. My mind was a storm of questions. Every road led back to him. His touch, his words. That look in his eyes, like he knew something I didn’t. How can I meet a man in a dream… that feels so real? Next day. Monday: Work day. When I opened my eyes, I prayed it was just a bad dream. But when I dragged myself to the window and saw my reflection in the glass, it was worse. Way worse. My face still looked like I fought a brick wall and lost. Swollen cheek. Red mark. And the small scab near my lips that burned every time I touched it. I can’t go to work like this, no way. I grabbed my phone and typed to my boss, Andy. “I’m sick, I can’t come to work today.” He replied instantly, like he’d been waiting. “If you don’t come, you’re fired. And you better bring me that assignment.” My stomach dropped. He meant the Selvik Voss assignment. The one I didn’t have. Selvik broke my camera lens, destroyed my SD card. All my work… gone. I stared at my reflection again, sighed, and got dressed. I put on my hoodie, face mask, and I didn't forget my sunglasses. I sprayed half my perfume bottle until the air was choking. If I couldn’t hide the damage, maybe I could distract people’s noses. When I reached the office, Andy was waiting. “Where’s the footage? Where’s the photos? You cost me money, Zyrella.” “I… something happened...” I tried, but he cut me off. “I’m not paying you this month. Consider it punishment for breaking my equipment.” “It wasn’t...” I started again, but he waved me away like a fly. I begged, but he didn’t care. So left his office back to my desk. Avery, my co-worker, slid over to my desk. “What happened? And don’t lie, I know this has something to do with Selvik Voss.” I leaned closer to her, with my voice lower. “Avery, listen to me. Don’t go near him. He’s trouble, big trouble.” She smirked. “You just don’t want me getting your scoop. You’re greedy, Zyrella.” I wanted to shake her, but she just laughed and walked away. I sat at my desk, my heart still pounding. I opened my laptop, searching for Selvik Voss. Nothing. Just gossip blogs saying he suddenly appeared three months ago. No family records, no old interviews, and no trace he existed before. Who the hell just shows up and becomes a billionaire overnight? I touched the scab on my face. My blood boiled, he owed me answers. After work, I went straight to his company... this tall, glass big building. The logo at the top gleamed under the evening sky. The moment I stepped inside, two security guards moved in. “Do you have an appointment?” “No, but...” “Then you can’t go in.” “I just need five minutes...” “Ma’am, you’re blocking the entrance.” They didn’t even blink. I tried again, harder, but they were walls. Solid, unmoving. Eventually, they told me to leave or they’d escort me out. So I sat on the steps outside. People walked past me like I was invisible. The building’s lights turned golden. I checked my phone, and hours has passed. Night fell. My legs were numb, but I stayed. Then a black car rolled up, looking sleek. Expensive, and the tinted window slid down. Selvik Voss sat inside, looking at me like I was some street entertainment. His mouth curved into a smirk. “You look gorgeous, by the way,” he said, his voice smooth. “Should I polish the look more?” My fists clenched so tight my nails dug into my palms.
