Chapter One
Annabella’s POV
I was only five when my parents were killed in a rogue attack. They were the only ones who had given their lives that day. I’ll never forget the last moments with my parents before it all happened. My mother with her too big for her face green eyes, pulled me behind her as we ran for the packhouse. My father and his wolf kept us safe as we ran. He had jumped over us to keep a rogue from attacking us, but I heard him whimper and cry out. “Do not look back Annabella! Keep your eyes towards the ground, baby mommy will keep you safe” my mother managed to yell out in between sobs. We are just about at the stairwell leading up to the packhouse when I hear a blood curdling scream.
I woke up from my dream drenched in sweat. I had this dream frequently, growing more and more common the closer I get to eighteen. I groaned and looked at my alarm clock, five in the morning. A whole hour before I must get up, but at this point might as well get up. I slowly get out of my twin size bunk bed careful not to wake up Cassie, the omega sleeping on the top bunk. Stretching my arms to the side and yawning, I make my way to the small bathroom that connects to our room and get to it. Brushing my teeth, snow white hair and washing my face. I put on my daily outfit, beige pants and long sleeves with a tan linen apron over it. The classic uniform for us omegas in this pack. I slipped on my brown flats and headed up to the kitchen to start breakfast.
My morning duties include cooking and serving breakfast at the packhouse, cleaning up the dining hall after the meal and laundry. While its not horrible, cooking and cleaning for a hundred people gets tiring. It’s Monday, which means the first day of training for the week. The pack warriors will need extra carbs and more servings. We have a kitchen manager, an elderly wolf who is supposed to keep us in line and organized. However, since her mate passed, she’s just not in the head space. She spends her days by the pond. We make sure none of the higher-ranking wolves find out, we can manage just fine without her. I cook a pancake bar, filled with pancakes, waffles, fruits, sweet toppings and all sorts of syrups. To go with it, I make a dozen pounds of bacon, sausage and ham. There are multiple pitchers of juice, milk, and other drinks on each long table in the hall. Most meals are served buffet style, so I make sure that the start of the line has enough plates and cutlery to last a few minutes so I can take a break.
By the time I get everything prepped and put out the other four omegas I work with in the morning show up. “Wow Annabella, I cannot believe you have done all of this by yourself. You must have been up super early.” Cassie said, placing napkins at each seat. I just smiled and shrugged at her. “Well, I guess we should go ahead and ring the bell, so everyone knows its ready” Benjamin, a handsome seventeen-year-old said. He winked at me, and I couldn’t help but stare at his piercing blue eyes. Dear Moon Goddess, please let him be my mate I silently begged. I, Cassie and a younger girl Claire go and stand against the back wall with our heads down while Benjamin presses the button on the intercom. This will send a little noise into each room of the pack house. He then stands next to me and puts his head down.
We stay like this while everyone else eats their meal. Only leaving the wall if called upon. While we are not abused here like a lot of other packs, we aren’t treated equally though. I must focus to keep myself calm. Just a few more days until I turn eighteen and I will finally meet my wolf and hopefully my mate. I have already decided to leave the packhouse and move out into the back of the fields on the border of pack territory. It can be a dangerous place to live if there are ever attacks, but for the most part it’s just quiet and nobody else around. “Annabella refill the orange juice pitcher at the Alpha’s table please” the beta’s wife, Susie, instructed me. Susie was extremely nice to us, her husband Bill as well. I smiled and nodded before I made my way to the table. Alpha Jacob, Luna Mary and their son Blake are sitting at the head of the Alpha table. Which is also filled with the beta family, gamma family, head warrior and his family and some of Blake’s friends. I grew up with them all and have never really been included. Fine by me. While his parents are decent enough, Blake is a f*****g prick. He has a new girl under him every few days, picks on those below him and doesn’t really care about anyone besides himself. He is going to make a horrible alpha. I even once overheard him saying to his friend, Mark, that he is going to take away the omega’s pay once he is in charge. That’s really one of the big differences in this pack compared to almost every other pack. We get paid. Not a ton, only about ten dollars an hour. But we don’t have to pay for food or bills so if you don’t blow it, it’s easily buildable.
“Good morning, Alpha and Luna, I am going to refill your orange juice pitcher. Is there anything else I can bring out for you?” I asked with a sweet smile on my face. My eyes, the same as my mother’s, avoiding eye contact with Blake. “Good morning sweetie, I think we are actually finishing up, so no need to squeeze more juice.” Luna Mary said. I bowed my head and went to stand back on the wall. It took about an hour and half for everyone to eat and leave. Now comes the hard part, cleaning. Cassie and I each take a side of the hall and clean the tables. Claire cleans up the buffet, putting away leftovers and Benjamin does the floor. We all meet in the kitchen and clean it together, getting it ready for the omegas who will cook and serve lunch. “Claire it’s Monday, I would like for you to go spend three hours in the library doing the work packets I made for you this weekend” I said taking the hamper full of dirty towels and rags from her. She smiled and skipped away. We omegas don’t attend the pack school, instead we are basically homeschooled. Minus a teacher, for some reason we just have always taught ourselves. While I may not be a genius, I learn fast, and I help teach the younger omegas.
Now that the kitchen is clean, I start on the laundry. There are five floors plus the basement, which is where the laundry facility is located. Thankfully we have a service elevator we are allowed to use. Its also a rule that pack members leave their hampers outside of their doors every morning. I start on the fifth floor, the alpha’s family floor, first. It has three apartments. The Alpha’s, one for an alpha guest, and Blake. He gets an entire apartment to himself. Even though he only turned eighteen a few months ago and has not even found his mate yet. I expected two hampers, but Blake’s was missing. After putting his parent’s hamper onto my cart, I stopped at his door. I wipe the sweat off my palms and knock on the door. I don’t know why I am nervous; I focus to keep my heart from beating fast. Us werewolves can hear those things and it’s a dead giveaway. His door swung open, and Blake stood there smiling at me. “Hello there little omega.”
