Chapter 1:The mysterious stranger
‎Rain poured from the slate-gray sky as if the heavens themselves were trying to drown the city. ‎Ethan pulled his thin, threadbare hoodie tighter around his shoulders, but the damp cold seeped straight to his bones, leaving his shoes soaked through. In his right pocket, his fingers tightly gripped a tiny, crinkled paper envelope. It held the absolute last of his money—barely enough to buy a stale loaf of bread. In his left pocket, a stack of unpaid bills sat like a weight made of lead. ‎He sighed, his breath forming a brief mist in the freezing air. How did my life end up like this? ‎His phone buzzed in his palm, the screen glowing harsh and bright against the gloom. ‎[St. Jude Hospital: Payment overdue for Unit 402. Please make arrangements immediately to avoid discharge.] ‎Ethan let out a bitter, lifeless laugh that was instantly swallowed by the downpour. Arrangements? He couldn't even afford a hot meal tonight, let alone another week of intensive care to keep his mother alive. Every time he closed his eyes, he could still hear the rhythmic, unsteady beep of her heart monitor and see the pale, hollow look on her face. Time was running out. ‎He kept walking down the dimly lit avenue. The streets were completely deserted, swept clean by the storm—except for a single figure up ahead. ‎Sitting alone on a rusted park bench under the dim yellow glow of a streetlamp was an old man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. Ethan slowed his pace, a strange chill creeping up his spine. Rain lashed down in heavy sheets, bouncing off the pavement, yet the old man remained entirely untouched. Not a single drop landed on his suit. The rain seemed to bend and curve away from him, sliding off an invisible shield. ‎"Young man," the stranger called out, his voice smooth, calm, and impossibly clear over the roar of the storm. ‎Ethan paused, looking around the empty sidewalk. "Me?" ‎The old man offered a faint, elegant smile. "Come here." ‎Every instinct in Ethan’s body screamed at him to turn around and run. The sight defied logic. But desperation has a way of silencing fear, and curiosity pulled him forward. ‎As Ethan stepped closer, the temperature around the bench plummeted. The old man reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a thick, pitch-black envelope, and placed it carefully on the wooden bench between them. ‎"I've been waiting for you, Ethan," the man said smoothly. ‎Ethan frowned, taking a half-step back. "Do I know you?" ‎"No. You do not." ‎"Then why me?" Ethan demanded, his voice trembling slightly. "Why are you sitting out here in the rain?" ‎"Because you are desperate," the stranger replied simply. ‎Those four words hit harder than the freezing wind. Ethan swallowed hard, his fists clenching at his sides. "What do you want?" ‎"I want to offer you a contract," the old man said. ‎Ethan let out another hollow laugh, shaking his head. "A contract? What is this, a job offer?" ‎The old man’s smile widened just a fraction, a glint of something ancient and unyielding flashing in his eyes. "Something far more valuable." He slowly pushed the black envelope across the bench toward Ethan. "Inside is everything you've ever wanted. A solution to all your fragile, human troubles." ‎Ethan hesitated. The cold air pinched at his skin, but his hand moved on its own. He picked up the envelope. The material felt surprisingly heavy, smooth like polished stone. ‎He unsealed it and tipped the contents into his trembling palm. ‎Inside was a matte-black metal bank card—completely blank except for a gleaming crimson strip across the top—and a folded sheet of heavy parchment. Ethan unfolded the paper. At the top, written in dark, wet red ink that looked almost fresh, were five words: ‎EVERY WISH HAS A PRICE. ‎A violent, icy gust of wind swept down the street, forcing Ethan to shield his eyes for a single second. ‎When he looked back up... the bench was empty. ‎Ethan spun around, scanning the rain-slicked pavement in every direction. The street was totally bare. The old man was gone. Only the heavy black envelope and the mysterious card remained in his shuddering hands. ‎
