Untitled Episode
CHAPTER ONE :THE WEIGHT OF POVERTY The heavy morning mist did not hide the rust on the gates of Oakridge Academy, nor did it hide the patches on James’s uniform. James stood at the entrance, clutching his bag tightly. At seventeen, his shoulders already carried the weight of an entire family. He was here on a razor-thin academic scholarship, a rare lifeline for a boy from the slums of the city’s lower district. His mother, a woman whose hands were permanently calloused from scrubbing floors of the wealthy, worked sixteen-hour shifts just to buy pens for James and his two younger sisters, Maya and Lily. Every day, his sisters went to the local public school with empty lunchboxes but hopeful smiles, believing their big brother would one day rescue them from the damp, single-room apartment they called home. And then there was his father. Once a proud man, he had long succumbed to the bottle. Most nights ended with James dragging his father off the kitchen floor, smelling of cheap gin, while his mother quietly wept in the corner. "Look at him," a sneering voice cut through the morning air. "The charity case is here. Did your dad sleep in the gutter again last night, James?" James kept his eyes on the ground, ignoring the laughter of the students walking past. He was used to the bullying. The cruel whispers, the shoved shoulders in the hallway—they were just the toll he had to pay for an education. He could endure all of it because of one person. Clara. Clara was beautiful, smart, and the only person in this elite school who had ever looked at James like he was human. They had been dating in secret for six months. To James, she was his sanctuary. When they studied together in the library, the rest of the world faded away. With a racing heart, James walked toward the school courtyard. Today was their anniversary, and he had spent his meager savings from his after-school janitorial job to buy her a simple, polished silver ring. It wasn't gold, but it represented every ounce of his devotion. He saw her standing by the grand marble fountain. But she wasn’t alone. Standing next to her was Festus—the son of a prominent real estate mogul, dressed in a custom-tailored uniform, his luxury sports car parked conspicuously in the background. Festus was everything James was not: wealthy, arrogant, and untouchable. "Clara!" James called out, a soft smile breaking across his tired face. Clara turned. Her usual warm eyes had turned cold, resembling shards of ice. She didn't smile back. "James," she said, her voice devoid of any affection. "Don't come any closer." James paused, his hand freezing in his pocket where the ring lay. "What's wrong? I’ve been looking for you all morning." "We need to talk," Clara said, stepping closer to Festus, who immediately wrapped a possessive arm around her waist. Festus smirked, looking at James as if he were an insect. "Clara, what is this?" James’s voice trembled. "It’s over, James," Clara said, her voice echoing across the courtyard. Other students began to stop, sensing drama. A crowd was quickly forming. "I can't do this anymore. I'm leaving you." "Why?" James whispered, his chest tightening. "What did I do?" "You didn't do anything. You just are nothing," she replied coldly. "Look at yourself, James. You're a charity case. Your family is a joke. Your father is a public nuisance, and your mother cleans toilets. I am smart, I am pretty, and I have a future. I deserve a life of luxury, not a life of counting pennies with a boy who can barely afford lunch. Festus can give me the world. You can’t even buy me a decent meal." The words pierced James’s chest like physical blades. He looked at her, devastated. "But Clara... we promised. We love each other. You know how hard I'm working..." "Love doesn't pay the bills," Clara snapped, her eyes flashing with a desperate, hidden panic that James was too heartbroken to notice. "So stop bothering me. We are from two different worlds, and I’m choosing mine." Festus laughed, tossing a handful of loose change at James’s feet. "Here, kid. Go buy your dad a drink on me. And stay away from my girl." The crowd erupted into cruel laughter. James felt the tears finally spill over his cheeks. He fell to his knees in the middle of the courtyard, right in front of the entire school. He didn't care about his pride anymore. The humiliation was absolute, suffocating, and public. He wept openly, his hands gripping the wet concrete as the mocking laughter washed over him. Clara watched him for a fraction of a second, a flicker of guilt crossing her face before she turned her back on him, walking away hand-in-hand with Festus. What James did not know—what no one in the school knew—was the dark secret Clara was harboring. Just a week ago, Clara had stared in horror at a positive pregnancy test. She was pregnant. And the baby was James’s. In her terror, Clara realized that having a baby with a destitute scholarship student would ruin her dreams of high society forever. She couldn't afford to be poor. She couldn't raise a child in the slums. So, she had made a ruthless, calculated decision. She had targeted Festus, seduced him, and just last night, lied to him. She had wept in Festus's arms, claiming she had just discovered she was pregnant with his child after a party weeks ago. Desperate to protect his family's reputation and infatuated with her beauty, Festus had swallowed the lie completely, promising to take care of her and the baby, offering her the wealthy life she craved. As Clara walked away from the weeping boy on the concrete, she clutched her stomach. She had traded her soul, and James's child, for a ticket to high society. On the ground, James slowly picked himself up. He wiped the tears from his face, his eyes suddenly hardening. The boy who had arrived at Oakridge Academy with hope was gone. In his place was a young man who had lost everything. As he looked at the retreating figures of Clara and Festus, a cold, burning resolve took root in his heart. They had broken him today. But they would not destroy him.
