The Twist That Changes Everything

1196 Words
The morning of the fashion competition felt different in Lagos. Not loud. Not chaotic. Just… tense. Adunni stood backstage holding her sketchbook tightly, her palms slightly sweaty for the first time in weeks. This was it. Her big moment. Her chance to prove she was more than heartbreak. The lights above the runway glowed brightly while designers and models moved around nervously. Cameras flashed. Judges took their seats. And then… She saw him. Damian. Sitting on the judging panel. Calm. Controlled. Too calm. Her stomach tightened instantly. But this time, she didn’t look away. Neither did he. Their eyes met across the room. And something unspoken passed between them. Not love. Not hate. Something heavier. ⸻ Jayden Arrives — The First Twist “Good luck,” Jayden’s voice came from behind her. Adunni turned and smiled softly. “Thanks.” He adjusted her name tag gently. “You’re going to win this.” She laughed lightly. “You’re very confident.” Jayden nodded. “Because I know talent when I see it.” For a moment, everything felt peaceful again. But peace never lasted long in her life anymore. Because just as she turned back— A staff member rushed onto stage. “Stop everything!” Confusion spread instantly across the hall. The judges leaned forward. “What is going on?” someone asked. The staff member held up a folder. “This entry… was submitted under false design ownership.” Silence. Adunni froze. “What?” The staff member continued: “These sketches match a previously submitted private Cole Enterprises design archive.” Her heart dropped instantly. Her head slowly turned toward Damian. He looked just as shocked. But then something worse happened. Vanessa Cole entered the hall. ⸻ The Real Twist Begins She walked in slowly, heels clicking against the floor. Elegant. Cold. Powerful. She didn’t look at Adunni at first. She looked at Damian. Then the judges. Then finally… Adunni. And smiled slightly. “I apologize for the interruption,” she said calmly. But her tone wasn’t apologetic. It was calculated. “I believe there has been a misunderstanding.” Adunni frowned. “What is this about?” Vanessa turned slightly. “This competition requires originality.” She placed a USB drive on the table. “And unfortunately… these designs were leaked.” Whispers filled the room immediately. Adunni stepped forward. “That’s not true.” But Vanessa didn’t look at her. She looked at Damian. And said something that changed everything. “She stole from your company’s design archive.” Adunni froze. “What?” Damian stood up instantly. “This is not confirmed.” Vanessa smiled slightly. “But it will be.” Silence. Heavy silence. Then— Jayden suddenly stepped forward. “I have something to say.” Adunni turned sharply. “Jayden?” He hesitated for the first time. Then said: “I was the one who submitted her work.” Gasps erupted in the room. Adunni stepped back. “What are you talking about?” Jayden looked at her. And for the first time… he wasn’t calm. “I needed to make sure you got into the competition.” Her heart dropped. “Why would you do that without telling me?” Jayden exhaled. “Because I knew your past would follow you here.” Then he added quietly: “And because I knew Damian would be on the panel.” Silence. Adunni’s eyes widened slightly. “Wait…” Jayden looked at her directly. “I used to work with Cole Enterprises.” Gasps again. Damian froze completely. Jayden continued: “I left after discovering unethical practices in the company’s design department.” He looked at Vanessa. “And I think this is one of them.” The room exploded with whispers. Vanessa’s expression finally changed slightly. Damian stepped forward. “You never told me you worked there.” Jayden looked at him calmly. “You never asked.” ⸻ The Emotional Twist — Damian’s Confession Everything was chaos now. But Damian wasn’t looking at Jayden anymore. He was looking at Adunni. Completely. Fully. And for the first time… without pride. “I need to say something,” Damian said suddenly. The room quieted again. Vanessa frowned. “Damian—” “Mom, please.” That was new. Even Vanessa stopped. Damian stepped forward slowly, eyes locked on Adunni. “I didn’t cheat on you.” Adunni stayed still. “I know that,” she replied softly. His chest tightened. “But I still destroyed you.” Silence. He nodded. “I let you believe lies. I let you suffer. I let my silence become your pain.” His voice cracked slightly. “And I hated myself every day for it.” Adunni didn’t move. Damian took another step forward. “I was weak when I should’ve fought for you.” He swallowed hard. “But I’m not asking you to forgive me.” A pause. “I’m asking you to know the truth.” The room was completely silent now. Even Vanessa didn’t interrupt. Damian’s voice dropped lower. “I love you, Adunni.” Gasps again. Adunni closed her eyes. For the first time… she didn’t react emotionally. She just listened. Damian continued: “And I know I don’t deserve you.” He looked at Jayden briefly. “I know there are better men in your life now.” Then back at her. “But I need you to know… I never stopped.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Adunni finally spoke. Her voice calm. Too calm. “Why now?” Damian hesitated. Because the answer was painful. “Because I almost lost you completely.” She shook her head slowly. “You already did.” That hit him like a punch. ⸻ Final Twist — The Decision Suddenly, the judges began arguing. Some wanted to disqualify Adunni. Some defended her. Chaos erupted again. But Adunni wasn’t listening anymore. She looked at Jayden. Then Damian. Then Vanessa. And realized something: Everyone in this room wanted something from her. But no one had asked her what she wanted. She stepped forward slowly. “I didn’t steal anything.” Her voice was firm now. “I built my designs from pain. From experience. From my life.” She looked directly at Vanessa. “And no one can copyright my story.” Silence returned. Then she turned to Damian. “I’m not your past anymore.” Damian’s expression broke slightly. “And I’m not your mistake to fix.” Then she looked at Jayden. Softly: “And I’m not your project either.” Jayden stayed silent. Adunni inhaled deeply. “I am my own story.” She dropped her sketchbook on the table. Turned around. And walked out of the competition hall. Leaving everyone behind. Including Damian. ⸻ Final Scene Outside, rain began falling again. But this time… she didn’t stop. Behind her, Damian stepped out slowly, watching her walk away. And for the first time in his life… He realized something terrifying. He wasn’t losing a girl anymore. He was losing a woman who had already learned how to live without him. And this time… There might be no way back.
