The Message That Changed Everything

905 Words
Adunni sat frozen on her bed, staring at the cracked phone in her hands. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, but it felt like no air was getting inside her lungs. “Tami lied.” “Please talk to me.” “This isn’t what you think.” Damian’s messages kept flashing on the screen like they were burning into her eyes. Her hands began to shake harder. “No…” she whispered to herself. “No, this can’t be real.” But the evidence didn’t disappear just because she wanted it to. She scrolled again. More messages. More panic. More desperation from Damian. Then the screenshots. Fake chats. Edited photos. Carefully crafted lies. Adunni’s stomach twisted painfully. Her mind replayed everything: • Damian suddenly becoming cold • The cheating rumors • The public humiliation • His confusion at seeing her sometimes • The way he kept saying “you don’t know everything” It all started to look… different. Very different. Her heart pounded violently. “Who did this?” she whispered. But deep down… She already knew. ⸻ The next morning, Adunni did not go to school. For the first time in days, she couldn’t face anyone. She sat quietly in her room, replaying everything over and over again until her head hurt. By afternoon, Tami arrived uninvited. “Adunni!” she called cheerfully, walking into the house like nothing was wrong. “You’ve been ignoring me.” Adunni stood slowly. Her eyes were different today. Calm. Cold. Focused. Tami noticed immediately. “What’s wrong with you?” Adunni didn’t answer at first. She just held the old phone up. Tami froze. For a second. Just a second. Then she laughed nervously. “What is that? An old phone?” Adunni stepped closer. “Explain it.” Tami frowned. “Explain what?” Adunni’s voice shook slightly, but she forced herself to stay strong. “Why did Damian say you lied?” Silence. The air in the room suddenly felt heavy. Tami blinked rapidly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Adunni unlocked the phone and showed her the messages. Tami’s smile disappeared instantly. For the first time… Her mask cracked. “What did you do?” Adunni asked quietly. Tami shook her head quickly. “You’re misunderstanding—” “Don’t lie to me again!” Adunni snapped, her voice breaking. The sound shocked even her. Tami took a step back. “I was trying to protect you!” “By destroying my relationship?” Tami’s expression changed completely now. The innocence was gone. “So what?” she snapped. “You think Damian would’ve stayed loyal to you forever?” Adunni stared at her in disbelief. Tami laughed bitterly. “Wake up, Adunni. Girls like you don’t keep boys like Damian Cole.” Tears filled Adunni’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “You ruined everything,” she whispered. Tami scoffed. “I saved you from humiliation.” “No,” Adunni said firmly. “You caused it.” Silence fell between them. Then Tami’s voice softened again. “You’re overreacting.” But Adunni stepped back. Something inside her had changed. “I trusted you,” she said quietly. Tami didn’t respond. “And you made me look stupid.” Still silence. Adunni nodded slowly. “Get out.” Tami blinked. “What?” “Get out of my house.” Tami’s face tightened. “You’re choosing him over me?” Adunni shook her head. “No.” Her voice hardened. “I’m choosing myself.” That was the moment Tami realized she was losing control. “You’re making a mistake,” she said sharply. But Adunni didn’t respond anymore. She simply walked to the door and opened it. Tami stood there for a moment, breathing heavily. Then she left without another word. The silence after she left felt different. Heavier. Real. Adunni collapsed onto her bed immediately, finally letting the tears fall. Not because of Damian. Not because of Tami. But because of everything she had lost believing a lie. ⸻ That evening, Damian sat inside his car outside Lagos University, watching students walk past without really seeing them. Femi stood beside him. “She blocked you again?” Femi asked. Damian didn’t answer immediately. He had tried calling. Texting. Even going by her house. Nothing. “She found the phone,” Damian finally said quietly. Femi frowned. “What phone?” Damian exhaled sharply. “The one I used to message her… the one she never saw.” Femi went silent. Then slowly said, “So she knows?” Damian nodded. “And Tami?” Damian’s jaw tightened. “I always knew something was off about her.” Femi stared at him. “So what now?” Damian looked toward the campus entrance. For the first time in a long time… His voice softened completely. “I fix it.” Femi frowned. “How?” Damian didn’t answer. Because the truth was simple. He didn’t just lose Adunni’s love. He lost her trust. And that was something even money couldn’t fix. ⸻ At the same time, across the city, Adunni stood by her window watching the rain fall again. But this time… She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t confused. She wasn’t weak. For the first time in her life, she finally saw everything clearly. And she whispered to herself: “I’m never being played again.”
