The quiet hum of the private elevator was the only sound in the hallway as they returned to the top floor. The tension from the boardroom seemed to follow them right back into the penthouse.
Christian unbuttoned his suit jacket the moment the doors slid open, tossing it onto the leather couch. He unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled his white sleeves up to his elbows with calm, practiced movements.
"You handled Victor well," Christian said, his tone dry as he walked toward the kitchen. "Most people freeze when he brings up their personal background in front of twelve board members."
Elena kicked off her heels near the entrance, letting out a long, exhausted breath. She walked over to the glass window, looking out at the city lights below.
"I've dealt with arrogant men before, Mr. Sterling," Elena replied quietly, keeping her back to him. "Your uncle isn't any different from a client who thinks money lets them look down on everyone else."
"Victor is much worse than a difficult client," Christian said, stopping a few feet behind her. "He was testing you. He wanted to see if you'd panic, or if you'd look to me for permission to speak."
Elena turned around slowly, looking straight at him. "And what did he see?"
"He saw someone who doesn't scare easily," Christian admitted softly, his expression relaxing slightly. "He saw that you're not just here for show."
For a second, the cold businessman facade slipped, leaving behind a man carrying a heavy amount of pressure on his shoulders. Elena looked at him, noticing the quiet fatigue around his eyes and the tension in his jaw that never seemed to fully go away.
"You live like this every single day, don't you?" she asked softly. "Constantly looking over your shoulder, surrounded by guards, treating every person like a business deal?"
Christian looked at her, staying quiet for a moment before stepping closer, stopping just a foot away.
"It's the only way to keep control," he said quietly, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Until you walked into my party and ruined my suit."
Elena felt her heart jump slightly, but she kept her chin up anyway. "I told you, that red wine stain was an artistic choice."
A faint smile touched the corner of Christian's lips, surprisingly real and unforced. He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing a stray lock of hair away from her cheek.
"A very expensive choice," he murmured.
Before she could say anything back, the quiet in the penthouse was broken by the sharp ringing of Christian's phone on the counter.
