Chapter 1: The Merlot Mistake
The heavy doors of the grand hall muffled the quiet chatter of the crowd inside. The clink of champagne glasses and polite laughter filled the air, wrapped in a tension that felt almost constant. Elena stood near the service station, her fingers holding tight to a tray she had been balancing for way too long. Her heart was beating fast. Just a few minutes ago, her plan was simple: stay invisible and blend into the background. As an independent event planner hired to manage behind the scenes for the annual Sterling gala, her only job was keeping the schedule running and making sure the VIPs had nothing to complain about. She didn't expect to draw any attention. And she definitely didn't expect to stand directly in the path of Christian Sterling. The man was practically a legend in the business world. He had a reputation for being ruthless, completely emotionless, and impossibly difficult to deal with. And right now, that exact Christian Sterling was staring down at her with a look that could stop anyone in their tracks. "Is there a reason," Christian started, his voice quiet, controlled, but sharp, "why your team decided red wine works as an accessory for a custom suit?" A sudden silence fell over the guests standing nearby. A few people visibly held their breath. Elena swallowed hard, trying to keep her composure even as her knees felt weak. She glanced down at the dark stain spreading across the crisp white fabric of his jacket. A complete disaster. Half a glass of Merlot spilled by a rushing server was now soaking into the chest of the most powerful man in the room. "It's an artistic choice, Mr. Sterling," she said. The words came out before she could stop herself. The surrounding space went dead quiet, as if the background music had just cut out entirely. Christian's jaw tightened. He slowly looked up from the stain back to Elena's face, his eyes narrowing with a mix of disbelief and annoyance. Nobody talked to Christian Sterling like that. Board members and senior executives folded the second he raised his voice. Yet here was an event organizer in a simple staff shirt, her hair tied in a loose bun, looking back at him without stepping down. "An artistic choice," Christian repeated, letting the words sit in the air. "And what exact message were you trying to send?" "That perfection is overrated," Elena replied, her voice steadying as her frustration took over her nerve. "And if you took a second to look around instead of acting like you own the entire room, you'd see the event is running fine despite one small mistake." Before he could say anything back to her, Elena turned around, set her tray down on a nearby table, and walked straight past the crowd toward the exit corridor. She fully expected security guards to stop her at the door or to get blacklisted from every venue in the city. The last thing she expected to hear echoing behind her was the low, genuine sound of him laughing.
