Prologue: The Gilded Cage
“On your hands and knees.” The words didn’t echo so much as they settled into the cavernous stone of the throne room—heavy, absolute, like they owned the air itself. My body reacted before my mind could mount a defense. My knees struck the polished stone hard enough that a sharp, immediate flare of pain shot up my legs. The chill of the floor seeped straight through the fabric of my dress, but my hands remained clenched at my sides. Everything in this room was designed to humiliate, to remind every living soul—and every immortal predator—who ruled the world. The eastern wall was lined with tall, arched windows, their glass stained with dark sigils that bruised the daylight into a sickly, colorless twilight. Gold-veined pillars rose in flawless symmetry, carved with the histories of an old kingdom that no one bothered to read anymore. And yet, all I could feel was the audience. Dozens of vampires. Immortal aristocrats, council members in formal black-and-silver robes, and guards standing like statues along the walls, their hands resting on weapons they would never draw for a mere human. To them, I was a curiosity, a fragile anomaly in a court of blood and fangs. Except for Genevieve, the court’s sweet, soft-spoken witch, and myself, every single soul in this glittering fortress was a creature of the dark. And in the absolute center of it all sat him. Alexei. He occupied the throne as if the entire fortress had been carved around the exact shape of his authority. One elbow rested carelessly against the armrest, his posture a masterclass in controlled, effortless power. He didn’t need to move to make everyone else feel small. Two years ago, Alexei had pulled me from the ash and embers of a nightmare. While I was away running a simple errand for my mother, my home had been erased. My parents—the leaders of our coven—my twin brother, and Daniel, the vampire I had loved with all my heart, had been slaughtered. Our entire coven was burned to the ground. I had returned to find only smoke and caskets, a broken, suicidal teenager begging the gods to let me die in the pyre. It was Genevieve who had saved me, using my family’s final, sacred heirloom—a talisman carved of obsidian and bone, shaped like a dove that caught the daylight in a shimmering haze, only to shift into the sleek, dark silhouette of a raven when night fell. Using that artifact, Genevieve had tethered my fading, shattered life force directly to Alexei’s, binding my survival to the vampire king who had swept in to claim the ruins. To the court, Alexei had declared me his personal pet. It was a cruel, barbed title, designed to mock me, but its true purpose was a shield—a warning written in blood that kept the other ravenous nobles from tearing me apart. Over the years, I had grown to feel a complicated, survival-born affection for Alexei, even a sliver of respect. But my heart had long since drifted elsewhere. To the guard standing quietly in the shadows. To Marcus. “Get on your hands, pet,” a harsh voice snapped from the side. The shove came before I could brace myself. My upper body pitched forward violently, my palms slapping the cold stone just in time to stop my face from meeting the floor. Pain bloomed across my wrists. A ripple of gasps and soft murmurs went through the noble crowd. They leaned in to watch. Always watching. Never intervening. I forced myself upright onto my knees, my arms trembling, refusing to give them the satisfaction of seeing me break. Alexei’s gaze hadn’t left me for a single second. That was always the worst part. There was no hesitation in his eyes, no confusion. Just heavy, unrelenting expectation—waiting to see how much pressure my soul could take before it finally shattered. “Avery,” he said. Lower this time. Sharper. He never used my real name in front of the court unless it was a warning. I lifted my chin, the defiance burning hotter than the grief in my chest. “You’re not my king, Alexei. You’re my kidnapper.” The words felt like stepping off a cliff. The room instantly plunged into a suffocating silence. Even the guards stiffened. I felt the crushing weight of his aura pressing into me—a psychic gravity trying to force me to my knees. It used to make my thoughts blur and fade. Not anymore. “You stole my youth from me,” I whispered, the truth tasting like ash on my tongue. A subtle discomfort rippled through a few council members. They knew. They all knew the history of the ashes I came from. Then, movement flickered to my left. Marcus. My breath caught. Deep, stormy blue eyes locked onto mine from the perimeter—strained, desperate, holding back an impulse that could get him executed on the spot. Marcus, the guard assigned to my protection, and the man who had slowly, against every law of the court, become my refuge, my secret, and my true love. “Don’t,” the word formed in my mind before I could stop it. The witch link snapped into place with a familiar, searing pulse behind my eyes. It was a fragile, illicit bridge I had built between us. “Avery, don’t do this,” Marcus’s voice echoed directly into my mind, strained with terror. “Avery. Enough,” Alexei’s voice cut across the same mental frequency—closer, heavier, carrying the absolute weight of a king who tolerated no disobedience. My temples throbbed as two separate forces pulled at my mind. Instinctively, my fingers reached up, closing around the talisman resting against my collarbone—the dove by day, the raven by night. The last fragment of my parents, and the anchor of my life. My throat burned. “Daniel…” I whispered, the name of my first love slipping past my lips like a prayer to the dead. With shaking fingers, I unclasped the necklace. The moment the cool metal left my skin, a terrifying vacuum opened inside my chest. The magical tether loosened, and my balance vanished. My vision softened and darkened at the edges as my body began to fail. Strong arms caught me before I hit the ground. Marcus. "I'm sorry," I whispered. His face filled my vision, stripped of all military composure, his blue eyes wide and terrified. “I know,” he whispered, tears breaking free and spilling down his face as he held me tight. He looked up at the throne, throwing away his entire life in a single desperate plea. “Please—just let her go." “Marc—” Alexei’s voice scraped through the air, a terrifying sound half-growled, half-snarled. And in that awful, suspended second, a sickening realization crystallized in my chest: Alexei knew. He had known about our secret affair all along. Though I hadn't known whose hands I was entrusting my heart to at first, I had fallen for Marcus—the very man Alexei had personally tasked with keeping me protected and out of danger. Marcus wasn't just any guard; he was Alexei's closest friend over the years, his most trusted confidant. Giving my love to Marcus hadn't just broken a rule; it had struck Alexei in a place he kept entirely guarded. It hurt him more than anything else ever could, poisoning centuries of brotherhood with raw, agonizing betrayal. The king rose from his throne. The air in the room turned to ice. “I, King Alexei Petrov Nikolson, sentence Marcus Ivan Sorensen to death,” Alexei declared, his voice vibrating through the stone floor with absolute, terrifying finality. “For high treason—and for betraying the sacred trust of his king.” Before I could scream, before Marcus could fight back, guards descended upon him like shadows, ripping him away from my arms. My world tilted entirely off its axis. I was pulled backward, away from Marcus, and straight into stronger, colder arms that smelled of winter frost and ancient power. Alexei. Up close, the iron mask of the king was cracked. His bright blue eyes weren’t cold anymore; they were fractured, filled with a dark, volatile mix of betrayal and raw, possessive panic. He knew he was losing control of the one thing he had fought to keep safe, and the friend he had trusted above all others had been the one to take it. “Take him to the dungeons,” Alexei ordered softly. As Marcus was dragged away, fighting silently through the sea of nobles toward his execution, the rest of the throne room dissolved into meaningless static. There was only Alexei. And there was only me. My thoughts slowed to a dangerous crawl. I saw the finality in his expression—not just a king punishing a traitor, but a monster securing his claim over what remained. Then, he moved. Pain hit me like a bolt of lightning—hot, piercing, and absolute—as his fangs broke cleanly through the skin of my neck. A sharp gasp tore from my throat. The court reacted with a collective intake of breath, but it sounded miles away, muffled as if I were sinking underwater. This wasn’t a casual feeding; this was a violent, public marking. A declaration written in my own blood for every noble and vampire in the room to witness. The ancient binding spell flared violently inside my veins, snapping shut like an iron trap, fusing my life to his with terrifying permanence. “You can’t ever leave me now,” Alexei murmured against my bleeding skin, his voice a low, vibrating confession meant only for my ears. His hand came up, forcibly sliding the dove-and-raven talisman back over my head, locking the heavy chain in place once more. “Even if you tried... I’ll always find you.” My body stopped fighting the dark. As the throne room dissolved into black ink, I let the silence take me, trapped forever in the shadow of his wings.
