Juliette Moreno
There is so much to this world than eating, sleeping, working, and playing. Humans believe that they are the apex of predators in this world despite there being tigers, sharks, snakes, etc. You see, I am a wolf with a human counterpart. I am a part of a world that shifts into humans so that we are able to blend in with “normal” society. I’m a wolf shifter. Not a werewolf. They are slaves to the moon god. The exact opposite of the do nothing moon goddess who claims false love of the species she created.
I am the daughter of the former Alpha, Holden Moreno. Now I’m an omega and my parents are dead. And do you want to know who killed them, my uncle, my dad’s brother, Alpha Nathan. Nathan was born to an alpha father and an omega mother and he did not inherit the alpha aura. He was my Papa’s illegitimate love child. Still, my father loved his older brother and never treated him like the runt that he is. But that wasn’t enough for Nathan wanted to be alpha because he wanted people to fear him. Instead it had the adverse effect. Every alpha on the east coasts hates him because my father was loved. Now we are the weakest pack in the country and we are attacked by rogues every other day. I am best fighter in this pack but even my strength wains after so many attacks. So maybe now you can understand why I am not a fan of the so call moon goddess.
Nathan may have demoted me to omega, but my alpha aura is strong. I have been told it’s stronger than any male in my family, and I’m a woman. The night I received my wolf is when my parents died. I was at my grandparent’s home when my skin began prickling and my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest.“Granny!Granny help!” I yelled calling out to my grandmother .My grandfather was out of town on business. Naturally she came running into the living room and then she gasped.
“But you’re only seventeen! You have a whole year to go before you’re supposed to receive you’re wolf.” Then I fell to the ground and felt my hands and feet painfully became paws. I howled in pain because I didn’t believe I was going to survive my shift. “Baby just breathe okay, take deep breaths and slowly exhale.” She directed. I took deep breaths and closed my eyes. I focused only on my breathing and not the pain. I literally fell into the sunken place but I could hear my grandmother’s voice guiding me back to her. “Juliette, my sweet girl, you’re so special! You are truly blessed by the moon goddess.” I then blacked out.
I tried to speak but I couldn’t.Instead I howled and the entire house shook. I looked over at my grandmother and there was nothing but love and adoration on her face.I towered over her and she is six feet tall. “I know you have questions and I have some of the answers babygirl. Turn around and look at yourself in the mirror.” She instructed.I did and what I saw blew me away. I was bigger than my dad and granddad and I fur was silvery white. All alpha wolves are black, no matter if you’re male or female. All other wolves are brown, russet and grey.“Oh babygirl you’re stunning! Come here and let me get a better look at you.”
I walked over to her and kneeled down in front of her.She hugged me and kissed my nose. “To shift back think of yourself in your human form.” She said softly. I imagined myself in what I wore this morning and then I was back looking my granny in her beautiful chocolate brown eyes.
“Granny, w-what’s g-going on?” I stammered.
“You’re an elemental my sweet girl.” She said with pride on her face.
“What’s an elemental? Is that why I shifted early?” I fired off.
“An elemental is a wolf with the abilities of a witch. One is born every five hundred years maybe. And if you look on your forehead there is the symbol of the elemental.” She answered.
“But why me? I just want to be a regular wolf Granny.” I whined.
“Hush now! Apparently that was not in the cards for you so must accept it and focus on how to deal with the hand that fate has dealt you. But the first thing I must teach you is to hide your alpha aura. Other male alphas may feel inclined to force you to accept their mark because of how strong you are. You have always smelled like gardenias so close your eyes and think of that smell.” She instructed.
I have always loved the smell of gardenias and so that is the smell I thought about. And then pop! There I was standing in front of the mirror, not the wolf the human. But there was something different about me, it was the insignia on my forehead, a golden five pointed star. Still, that wasn’t the only thing that was different about me. I was once 5’6 but now I’m as tall as my grandmother. And my skin which was a café latte brown is now a dark honey making the star shine even brighter. Then it faded into my skin.
“Granny what’s going on? I look just like my mom now?” I turned around to look for an answer.
“I-I don’t know babygirl.” Then we both fell to the ground screaming out in agony. That could only mean a close blood relative had died…Daddy? Seconds later my cell rings and I try to answer it but I couldn’t. The phone kept ringing and when the pain finally dulled enough so that I could answer it I did.
“Jules? Is that that you? Are you and your granny okay?” My grandfather asked.
“We’re fine Papa, but I need to call daddy I’ll call you back!” I quickly hung up the phone and called my mother. No answer. But I continued to call until granny took the phone from me.
“Babygirl, she’s not going to answer. I know you felt the disconnect. ”We both sat down on the couch and cried for what seemed like hours, but really it was just ten minutes.
“Granny I have to find their bodies.” The door slammed loudly and in walked Nathan.
“No need niece, I have brought their bodies here.” He paused. “Why are you as dark as your mother now?” He asked, however, before I could respond he continued. “Since you’re not old enough to rule the pack and you’re a female, I doubt you’re able to rule over such a large pack so I’ll be your proxy until you reach eighteen.” He said with a smirk.
“My parents are dead and you’re talking about ruling! How could you!” I screamed and once again the house shook.
My grandmother had fear on her face and I didn’t understand it. I wanted to pommel my uncle until he died but the fear on her face stopped me from doing so.
“Sit down Juliette. Calm your nerves babygirl. Nathan leave!” She said sternly. He smirked again and walked out of the house. “Nathan has coveted your father’s alpha title since he was a little one. I smell the scent of murder on him. He killed my boy.” She wept. However, I couldn’t cry. I was pissed the f**k off! I wanted revenge and I wanted Nathan’s head on a platter!
“I’m gonna kill him.” My wolf said.
“My Granny looked over at me and a small smiled played upon her lips. “What is your name wolf?” I felt myself being nudged to the back of my mind and another entity taking control of my body.
“My name is Aya Grandmother. I will protect Julie from Eshu.”
My grandmother looked confused and asked, “What is an Eshu?”
”Not a what, but a who. Eshu is evil. Anyone who could happily shed their own family’s blood in the name of power is Eshu.” Aya replied. I took over at that moment to explain this to my Granny further.
“Granny, this is a part of my Yoruba culture. What Aya is saying is that Nathan is a demon.” Granny nodded her head in understanding.
“That’s Alpha Nathan to you Omega.” He sneered.
