across the street
Chapter One Sarah I lived across the street from Rupert Collins for seventeen years. Seventeen years of watching him leave for school every morning. Seventeen years of seeing him come home with a basketball tucked under his arm. Seventeen years of pretending I didn’t notice him at all, I told myself it was easy, all I had to do was pretend like he doesn’t actually exist for me. Just another boy. Just another neighbor. Just another face I saw every day. But that was a lie. From my bedroom window, I watched him now, standing on his porch in his school jacket, laughing at something his little sister had said. His black hair was still damp, probably fresh from a shower, and his smile was unfairly perfect. I often wondered how God must have taken his time to create someone so handsome. He was tall , too tall for most door frames, and carried himself like he knew exactly how handsome he was. The basketball bounced once against the concrete. I quickly pulled my curtain back, my heart beating faster than it should have. Get a grip, Sarah. I turned away from the window and grabbed my backpack from my bed. My reflection in the mirror stopped me. Brown eyes. Brown hair falling softly past my shoulders. My school blazer fit perfectly, and for once, I felt like I looked… confident. At least on the outside. At school, I was known. I was popular. Smart. The girl teachers trusted to represent the school at competitions. The girl everyone expected to succeed. But Rupert? Rupert was untouchable. Basketball captain. School heartthrob. The flirt who smiled at every girl in the hallway. The boy everyone wanted. Why would he ever look at me the way I looked at him? I walked out of her house just as Rupert stepped off his porch. We locked eyes for a second — just a second — before I looked away, pretending to adjust my bag. “Morning, Sarah.” My heart nearly stopped. His voice was deeper than I remembered. I turned slowly. “Oh. Um… morning, Rupert.” We stood there awkwardly, the street quiet between us. I noticed his eyes flick to my hair, then to my face. He smiled — that same dangerous smile. “You’re going to be late,” he said. I blinked. “What?” He nodded toward the road. “Bus comes in like… two minutes.” “Oh. Right. Yeah.” I laughed nervously. “I know. I was just—” I stopped talking. Because Rupert was still looking at me. Not in his usual careless, charming way. This was different. Like he was actually seeing me. The bus screeched around the corner, breaking the moment. I rushed past him, heat rushing to my face. As I climbed aboard, I felt his eyes on my back. I sat by the window and told myself not to look. I failed. Rupert was still standing there, watching the bus pull away. And for the first time in seventeen years… He raised his hand and waved. My breath caught. My phone buzzed in my pocket. A new message. Unknown Number: “Hey, Sarah. It’s Rupert. We need to talk after school.” my heart slammed against my ribs. Talk? About what? I stared at the screen as the bus rolled forward, carrying me away from the boy I’d loved in silence for years. And suddenly, for the first time ever… Rupert Collins had noticed me.
