THE ICONOCLASTAfter his latest and most important coronation it is not long before Akhenaten makes public pronouncements that the mystery of the One God is to be represented by the disc of the sun and by no other image. All other images representing the manifold aspects of the One God, which have formerly been called “gods” and have been worshipped as such, are to be recognized as secondary attributes of the One God, which they always were, and nothing more. Any priest who claims otherwise is to be deprived of his office; and if he further persists in his folly he is to be outlawed, and declared nameless.
