Mara's Point Of View
I rushed upstairs to grab the keys, but then I found my belongings and stuff strewn all over the floor in the corridor.
With growing ire, I stormed into the bedroom...
Guess what hit me like an arrow! I walked in to find her stuff, perfectly arranged. It made me even angrier. Her dresses and outfits were neatly arranged in the wardrobe.
My wardrobe!
Kian rushed into the bedroom in seconds. Sweat was pouring down his face like he was the one in labor. I could see the concern etched on his face. One could as well tell that he was worried.
"Kian!" I pulled out a puppy face as I called. He wasn't interested in hearing me out. His anger became evident as he pulled the locker open to grab the keys.
"Kian!" I uttered his name with my heart beating faster.
"It freaks me out when you say my name. You've hurt me so badly, and I'm super disappointed in you! That aside, do you now have it planned to hurt Katrina and the baby? I asked you to come over here to grab my car keys, but instead, you chose to keep standing here. Do you want her to push out the baby all by herself in the mansion?!!" He screamed at me with so much hatred.
"Kian... I..." He broke into my words and stopped me from talking.
"Mara or whatever you're being called! I need you to listen to me and listen well! I don't want to return from the clinic to find you still here. Get your filthy things and disgusting self out of this mansion. And mind you, I'd be sending over the divorce papers for you to sign on." He went on to say.
I didn't get a chance to say anything, as he angrily left the room and banged the door shut.
He intentionally messed around by cheating on me with Katrina, yet, he seemed very much innocent in the eyes of everyone, including the servants. Mine was a different case, but even at that, I'm being seen as a cheat and an unfaithful wife.
What happened wasn't my fault! Someone took advantage of me while I was drunk, does that make me a cheat?
"I don't want to return from the clinic to find you still here! Get your filthy things and disgusting self out of this mansion. And mind you, I'd be sending over the divorce papers for you to sign on." I couldn't get his words out of my head. His voice was stuck in my mind as well.
I knew I'd be seen as a loser if I got to leave the mansion or sign the divorce papers. I can't let Katrina take over my spot in his life. So, I stubbornly refused to leave the mansion. Instead, I decided to wait for his arrival.
The hours ticked by, with no sign of his return from the clinic. His stay at the clinic with Katrina had spanned multiple days. The unknown timing of his return hung over me like a cloud.
Katrina's got his attention now...
"How I wish she and the baby could just die!" I said to no one in particular, while alone in the bedroom.
A maid barged in as the door opened. She gave me a weird look while leaning against the door that slammed shut. She touched the nape of her neck with a look away while having me widen my eyes at her.
I wondered if she caught what I said earlier...
"Jasmine, why being so rude when you could have just given the door a knock?" I gave her a dirty look.
"I'm so sorry ma'am! I didn't mean to intrude on your privacy." She apologized profusely. However, her suspicious gaze lingered on me.
I wished it wasn't what it seemed. What if she'd overheard me?
"How long have you been standing at the door?" I asked her directly.
"Ma'am, I haven't been standing at the door for so long! I stepped in...the instant I got to the threshold." She said,
"Were you eavesdropping on my words? Could you repeat what you heard!" I looked at her suspiciously.
"No...no...ma'am! Not at all." She stuttered a little bit.
"Are you being honest right now? Don't you dare lie to me!" I raised my voice at her while still having my butt in a seated posture on the big-sized bed.
"I promise, I'm being honest ma'am!" She said, "I just came to inform you that the boss and Lady Katrina have arrived." She added.
I didn't respond. Her words sank into my mind slowly.
"If you'd excuse me, ma'am. I'd like to take my leave!" She veered around to step out when I stopped her.
"Jasmine, are you sure you didn't hear what I said earlier?" I asked her for the second time.
"Yes, ma'am!" She shook her head and left.
After her departure, I rose from the bed, adjusted my robe, and then, walked out in my flip-flops.
My world seemed to slow down as I descended the stairs.
"Mara, I thought I asked you to leave before my return! What the hell are you still doing here?" Kian's voice cut in with a question just as I was about to step on the last stair.
I froze for a moment, then continued my downward path till I stepped on the marble floor in the luxurious living room. Katrina was reclining on the couch, while he stood, cradling the baby in his arms.
"Congratulations!" I faked a smile.
"You can't fool me with such a smile! Deep down inside of you, you're pained." Katrina rolled her eyes at me. It was as if she could read me like a book.
"Mara!!, you just have to leave now. Leave and never return. This is an order!" Kian interjected with a disapproving gaze at me.
"No darling, let her stay!" She said as she smirked at me. Her smirk wasn't a good one. It concealed a secret intention.
The servants all rushed out to welcome them on their arrival. For the male servants, they bowed in greeting, while the females curtsied, "Welcome!"
"Thank you! Now, I want to use this medium to announce to you all that your services will no longer be needed. You all have been fired. The only human whose services will still be needed is Jasmine...the chief maid." She formally announced their termination, while having Jasmine excluded.
All eyes shifted towards Jasmine. The rest of the servants were shocked.
"Please, ma'am!"
"What have we done wrong?"
“What's your reason for firing us all, except Jasmine?"
They started asking her a whole lot of questions while pleading with her to reconsider. The atmosphere changed in an instant. It went from being peaceful to being ridiculously loud. They made it seem like it was a sports stadium.
Kian looked just as confused as everyone else. I could tell from the look on his face that he was busy wondering why she chose to fire all the servants and have Jasmine excluded like there was a relationship that had been going on between them.
"My decisions are not to be questioned at all!." Her sharp tone cut through the air like a knife.
"Katrina, please, keep it down!" Kian attempted to calm her nerves. "Why do you think it's necessary to fire them all, while have just Jasmine around?" He inquired further.
"That's because we've got a new maid!" She uttered.
One by one, the servants whom she dismissed, started making their way out.
"So, why am I just hearing about it now?" He asked, but then the baby's loud cry overshadowed his voice.
Katrina's ears picked up his words as she responded, "That's also because she's standing right here in our midst."
Her stare blended with mine. Her intense stare had me wondering, as I hoped I wasn't the one she was referring to.
"Mara?" My brow furrowed in curiosity as Kian asked her.
"Yes, who else were you expecting? Her role will involve assisting Jasmine with the chores, and attending to our baby's needs in our absence."She said.
What?!!! How dare she?!!! Hasn't she done enough?
"Katrina, don't you think you're being too extreme? Why would you consider her fit for a position like this? Have you forgotten who she is?" Kian let out a deep breath.
"I don't freaking care! And mind you, I'm not being too extreme." She frowned at him, before shifting her gaze towards me.
My anger took the better part of me as I veered around to head back upstairs. I made my way into the guest room where I locked myself up. Having reflected deeply on my life, I cried myself to sleep.

I woke up to realize that the evening had slipped away and that I had skipped dinner. Hunger finally got the best of me, so...I crept out of bed to go find food. I yawned out so loud as I approached the kitchen door downstairs. However, I stopped dead in my tracks as the sound of voices drifted out of the kitchen.
"What were you thinking? I can't believe you made such a decision. You and I are so much aware that your blood group doesn't align with Kian's. Fine, you got pregnant for him, but then we both agreed for you to get rid of the baby."
"It's not my fault! You shouldn't be blaming me at all. This was my only way of getting back into his life. I couldn't just cross my arms and watch her take him away from me."
"I guess you're happy now! Your baby has been born with a sickle cell condition. What if Kian gets to find out?"
"He'd never get to find out, that's if you promise to keep your lips sealed. Besides, I am not bothered at all. Do you think I'd be willing to take on the responsibility of a sickle cell baby?"
"So... what's the plan now?"
"Come closer. Let me share an idea that has been on my mind. It's known as the backup plan."
The voices of both Katrina and Jasmine, which I detected, filled the air. What could be their relationship with each other? Had they been pretending all along? What's with the backup plan too?
