Mara's Point Of View
"Oh my!" I exclaimed as I raised my hand to cover my mouth. I made a break for the guest room, trying to sneak back upstairs without being caught by them.
To my dismay, the kitchen door swung open, and I was caught red-handed. As I turned, I was confronted with the sight of them. Katrina's stare pierced through me.
"Look who we have here!" Jasmine spoke in hushed tones. "You now listen to people's conversation...huh?! Well, well, well, bravo girl!" She applauded me with a sarcastic smile.
"I had no idea that I'd been sharing the same space with someone so ruthless! Jasmine, just in case you've forgotten, I hired you as a maid. You're not exactly a model of virtue, considering your involvement in the scheme with her." I shot back at her.
"Can you please just shut that hole you call a mouth? Do not forget that I'm still standing here. Jasmine here is no longer your maid. I need you to get this straight into your empty skull. Hence, you'd be the only one in charge of the domestic chores." Katrina inserted herself into the conversation with a bossy attitude.
"You're not making any sense, Katrina! I'll make sure you pay for what you've done! I'll expose your secrets to everyone." I threatened. But then, my words were met with mocking laughter.
"She's so funny!" Jasmine tried to keep a straight face.
"Let's see you try then! Mara... I'm not concerned about what you overheard. Kian is now fully engaged to me. This proves that he wants nothing to do with you anymore. You'll never get through to him." She rolled her balls at me.
"You can't scare me with your empty words. I'll use this chance to tell him about your scheme. I'd let him know that you lied about your blood group." I said.
"You wouldn't dare! Mara, I've got enough evidence to use against you." Jasmine pulled out her phone. "I have a recording of your wish for Katrina and the baby to die." She added.
"What?!!!"
"Just so you know we're the ones calling the shots. You're beneath us. We'd watch you get kicked out by your prince charming husband. You'll be doomed to a life of misery. All the assets and riches will be ours alone." Katrina smiled evilly.
A chill ran down my spine as my knees weakened at the moment. Good heavens, I was stunned!
"The worst is yet to come!" Katrina kept laughing like she was going crazy. She ascended the stairs majestically. Jasmine stuck out her tongue at me before trailing behind her.
I had my eyes fixed on them as they went up the stairs, till they were out of my sight. From the spot where I was, I proceeded to take a seat on the couch in the opulent living room. Having sat down on the couch, my thoughts deepened, till I dozed off.
The next morning, I awoke with my head banging so hard.
"Look who's finally decided to wake up all by herself! I was starting to think you'd sleep forever." Katrina's voice shook me. I hadn't realized that she was so close till I found her seated on the nearby couch. She had dressed up in a stunning red outfit like one prepared to head out. Her feet were adorned with elegant, high-heeled shoes too. She had her newborn baby lying beside her on the couch while getting busy pumping the milk from her breast into a feeding bottle.
"That's not healthy for the baby, Katrina!" I showed concern.
"How nice of you to care now!" She spoke in a low tone. "This is my home, and so... I won't be needing any breastfeeding lessons from you. Who knows if you're ever going to be able to deliver that thing in your womb." She switched into an icy tone.
"Katrina, the day has just started. I won't tolerate your hurtful words about my unborn child and me." I frowned at her ugly face.
"Whatever!" She made a sibilant sound at me like that of a snake.
She rose to her feet, adjusted her outfit, and then walked towards the exit.
"And where are you headed?!!! Seriously, Katrina?!!! You just had a baby. Your body needs time to heal. The baby needs your care too. Don't you think you should be resting, instead of going out?" I posed a question at her.
She stopped dead in her tracks. Then, turned to look at me from the threshold, "It's none of your business. Don't you have better things to do than meddle in my affairs? Why not focus on your life and problems?"
"You can't just leave your baby behind. Why should you head out when you've got a newborn baby to take care of." I said to her.
"I'm leaving my baby with you, so deal with it." She pulled a face.
"Am I supposed to nurse your baby for you, while you're away?" I queried her.
"Your questions are pointless. I need to get going before the party starts." She flaunted her hair before stepping out. Not long after she'd left, Kian climbed down the stairs in a well-fitted black suit paired with a white shirt, striped tie, and polished black oxfords. I swiftly stood up to approach him. While adjusting his cufflinks, he directed his gaze at the dining table.
Katrina didn't make breakfast.
"Katrina!!! Katrina!!!" He called out with a strict look.
"Good morning, Kian!" I pulled closer to him.
His eyes left the dining table to meet mine. He gave me the cold shoulder.
"Should...should I...huh...rush into the kitchen to whip up breakfast for you?" I stuttered.
"Never mind! I'll grab a snack on my way to the office." He said.
"I insist! Please sit down and allow me to whip up something for you to eat." I said.
"Mara!I don't have time for this. I said I'll grab a snack on my way to the office. I'm going to be so late." He glanced at his wristwatch before joining the baby on the couch for a quick playtime. He then rushed out in a hurry.
I hastened to the couch to calm the baby by carrying him...as he broke into tears. From the glass table, I grabbed his feeding bottle and began feeding him. I sat, gently rocking him in my arms.
The baby's eyes closed in bliss as he sucked from the bottle, with his tiny lip curled around its n****e. His happy sighs signaled that he was ready for a nap. I scooped him up and carried him to his room to lay him in his cot. Next, I headed to the nearby guest room to start my daily routine.
I rushed into the baby's room. I was shocked and alarmed to see him crying with a bleeding lip. His sobs eventually subsided, and he fell quiet. I rapidly lifted him into my arms.
"Oh my!!!" I uttered a loud gasp as I rushed out of the room with him. My breath caught in my throat as I felt his lifeless body.
It had turned cold and stiff.
