Survival

A twig snapped behind them. Steven turned around cautiously. He felt eyes staring at him through the foliage. He stared in what could almost be described as awe at the tall man emerging from the bushes. Steven jumped up and took a defensive stance. The man looked confused. His dark brows furrowed in confusion. He put his hand forward for a handshake but Steven refused. He was still suspicious. The tall man smiled and said 'And hello to you too'. Steven couldn't believe it. He just stared at the man dead in the eyes and said "What?". Was it real? Did this man speak in English or was he just losing his mind or imagining things? He wasn't certain. "Yeah I know English" he said smiling. Steven was relieved.  "I have many questions" Steven said in an upbeat tone. "Well go right ahead" the man replied. So after an intense conversation with the man he got the answers to most of his questions. The man had also come through some kind of portal into this strange land. He told Steven that he had formed a friendly alliance with the people of the place he was currently living in. The "Krugs" were the bad guys. They couldn't stand the idea of foreign men claiming territory or even living in their land. They probably felt threatened thought Steven. The "Malarks" which was the tribe currently with them wanted peace with the foreign man and welcomed him which angered the Krugs. They declared war on the Malarks after several arguments about the actions to be taken on the foreigner.  "So I'm safe for now yeah?" Steven asked with relief.  "Yeah pretty much" the man replied. "Ahh almost forgot: what's your name?" Steven asked smiling. "Tabitha" the man replied. "Odd yeah I know" he continued "and yours?" "Steven" he replied. "Do you know the local language by any chance?" he continued. "Well not fluent but I do know it to an extent" Tabitha replied. "Why?" "Can you ask her name?" Steven asked trying to hide the emerging, growing smile on his face.  Tabitha asked the girl her name and passed on the information to Steven. "Her name is Lily like the flower" he told Steven. "What a nice name!" Steven replied. "Alright let me show you my place" Tabitha said out loud excitedly. He led the way and Steven and Lily followed. The house was not too shabby. It was a brick house with chairs, a table and a fireplace. Most of the furniture was carved out of wood or stone. There were no electronics or sockets but Steven was not surprised.  "I have plans" Steven announced. "To keep us safe from the Krugs". Tabitha translated and all the Malarks around him started cheering.
