Chapter Two MAVERICK Snap. Snap. Snap. “Okay, now let’s get a few shots of you standing shirtless in front of the skyline,” Katie says, glancing out the window at the cloudless Los Angeles sky. It’s late afternoon, so the sun is casting a warm glow through the hotel room. It’s the perfect time of day for a shoot. As a newish photographer, she’s still trying to build her portfolio, and I owed my friend Jacob a favor, which means allowing his little sister to take pictures of me. She’s in her early twenties and cute in a girl-next-door kind of way with a short blond bob. Her lips are bright pink, and her black pants are so tight they look painted on. As I slowly undo each button of my dress shirt, I can tell she’s growing more nervous and flushed. I sometimes have that effect on women. W
