Prologue: A Perfect Evening
The late afternoon sun cast a warm, golden hue over the city park, dappling through the leaves of the old oak tree under which Emma and Liam had spread their picnic blanket. Emma's laughter rang out, a melody that Liam cherished more than any other sound in the world.
Liam struggled with the picnic basket, trying to balance it against the playful gusts of wind that threatened to whisk their food away. He finally managed to secure everything, and with a triumphant grin, he joined Emma on the blanket. They collapsed together, breathless and smiling, their fingers brushing as they reached for the sandwiches they had lovingly prepared that morning.
"This was such a great idea," Emma said, reclining on her elbows and gazing up at the sky, which was beginning to blush with shades of pink and orange.
"Yeah, it really was," Liam agreed, taking a bite of his sandwich and savoring the familiar taste of Emma's homemade pesto. "We should do this more often."
Emma turned to him, her eyes soft with affection. "I'm so glad we have this time together."
Their gazes locked, a silent understanding passing between them that words could never fully convey. Liam reached out, gently tucking a loose strand of Emma's hair behind her ear. "I love you, Emma."
"I love you too," she replied, her heart swelling with the warmth of his words. They clinked their soda cans together in a quiet toast, savoring the simplicity and joy of the moment as they settled in to watch the sunset, feeling as though time had paused just for them.
