Prologue
Rebecca pov Rebecca Simpkin, along with the majority of her contemporaries, raised their glasses to toast. Not only had they all completed high school, but they had also recently experienced their first rite of passage. She wanted to take the time to celebrate, despite the fact that her arms were shaking because she was transforming from human to wolf. Her whole body was engulfed in flames. Both nausea and hunger overcame her at the same time. Her head had been pounding against a brick wall for the past couple of hours, and it felt like it needed a break. She was not going to let any of that prevent her from taking pleasure in the present moment. She had finally transformed into a wolf. She had been worried for an entire year that she wouldn't be able to turn, that her parents would be angry with her, and that the pack would reject her for being a werewolf. It is true that in order for them to accomplish that, their alpha, Phoenix Marshall, would need to be there; however, he was never there. The fact that a nomad biker served as their alpha was a bit peculiar to say the least. She didn't see him very often, but she always knew when he was in town because the pack went absolutely crazy whenever he was there. He would drop by every once in a while. The fact of the matter was that he wasn't really their alpha—or rather, he was and he wasn't. Confusing, but the group had some issues in the past dating back several years. She had just turned ten at the time, so she hadn't been a part of any of the shenanigans that had been going on with the pack. Her knowledge came from overhearing her parents' conversations when she was a child. Nothing more than that. The previous iteration of their alpha had low strength. He had gotten himself into a position of power by boasting about how powerful he was and how he would protect everyone, but the reality was that he didn't have the slightest idea what he was doing. He had maintained his position at the top for many years by taking advantage of how obscure their location was. He was content to play the part of a dickhead until eight years ago, when some wandering wolves happened upon their quiet little town. At that time, he changed his tune. It didn't take the pack of wandering wolves very long to realize that they were completely helpless. The pack had been in constant fear for the past three days and nights while the alpha cowered before them and caved into their every demand. Men had been killed, and some women had been … r***d. Then, a man who was described as a nomad biker rode up on his motorcycle looking for a place to crash when he came across the other men who were there. Although Rebecca was not entirely certain of the specifics, it seemed as though Phoenix had visited the city on multiple occasions. Before continuing on, he would make it a point to stop, have a couple of beers, and get a good night's sleep before moving on. Because he had stayed this time and seen what had transpired, her parents described him as going into "full rabid mode." She had never before witnessed a wolf behave in such an unruly manner; however, it had been him up against possibly ten men. When she heard the story, which had been passed around when he was there, she thought it sounded a little bit unbelievable. Until you saw him. Phoenix was not a man who could easily be approached. He was tall, musculatured, heavily tattooed, and had a few scars that probably told a gazillion stories between them. He was also not very nice. But, and this was a significant but, he managed to maintain the town's security. As time went on, he came back more than once a year, and the women went absolutely crazy for him. Rebecca was unable to place the date or time of their most recent encounter. It had been a few years, but due to the fact that he was still a minor and had not changed, none of the pack permitted him to interact with the youngest. The fact of the matter was that Rebecca had frequently pondered why the pack did not appoint a deputy alpha, someone who would assume leadership responsibilities in the event that Phoenix rode off into the sunset. Rebecca shook off the strange feeling that had made its way down her spine by taking a sizable gulp of the beer. She felt queasy after drinking the beer because it was revolting. The queasy sensation did not seem to be going away. She put down her beer, and one of her friends, Daniel, gave her a puzzled look as he watched her do so. "I'm just heading outside," she said. "Are you interested in my presence?" "No, no, it's okay. You are to remain here. It won't be long before I'm back." She tried her best to smile, even though it was the furthest thing from what she actually felt. She made her way around the bar and headed toward the exit on the side. From the pack, there were fewer individuals overall. The pack despised those who showed weakness. Since that attack, they had been concentrating solely on increasing their strength. No one was allowed to show any sign of weakness, which was extremely difficult to do at times. Rebecca went outside, walked to the edge of the building, and then leaned against it as she took several hefty breaths of the warm air of the night. She fixed her gaze upon the moon, which was not quite so high in the sky as it had been earlier. Tonight, time was of no consequence. Her mother and father encouraged her to go out and enjoy herself. It was up to her to decide when she would go back home. This was a night for festivities and merriment. It is expected of her to be in there with her other friends. That peculiar sensation pervaded every part of her body. Rebecca wasn't sure what was going on, but as she turned around, she felt someone suddenly put their fingers around her neck and press her against the wall. He inquired, "What the f*****g meaning of this is," referring to the situation. She moved her hands to encircle her neck and quickly raised her head to see that it was none other than the alpha, Phoenix Marshall. At that very moment, he was sitting there in the bar with his fingers wrapped around her neck. His hold did not exert any pressure on the object. She did not appear to be in any distress. She was helpless to avert her gaze from him despite her best efforts because his hold was so strong. She referred to it as "Alpha." As he glared at her, his normally blue eyes suddenly changed to a dark amber color, and then back again. "You are a complete and utter newbie." Rebecca had never had a romantic relationship with a man. She'd never kissed any of the other members of the pack before. Even when some of them were f*****g tonight after they had completed their transition, she had been more interested in discovering this new body. She yearned for an understanding of the emotional side of her life that she could not relate to at all: the feelings of her wolf. "What exactly is going on?" Rebecca said. She had a strong desire to make physical contact with him, to move her hands all over his body and to inhale his scent. His scent was intoxicating to those around him. Her saliva began to flow. Her n*****s tightened. Her p***y became more slick as her need increased. The feelings that swept over her were beyond her ability to control. One part of her wanted to get on her knees and beg him to f**k her, while another part of her wanted him to get on his knees and press that face between her thighs. She couldn't decide which part of her she wanted more. She experienced her first kiss with Phoenix after he wrapped his fingers around her neck, pulled her in close, and then planted one on her. Everything became crystal clear to her the moment their lips made contact with one another. This man, who she considered to be her alpha, was her mate. "Honey, when the time comes and you finally come face to face with your soul mate, you will simply know." You are going to have to put your faith in us even though we can't explain in detail how we know this. It is this feeling, and it is more potent than anything else you have ever experienced in your life. It is so much more intense than any test that you have ever studied for, and yet it is more enjoyable than eating chocolate ice cream. It is more exciting than Christmas. What the actual hell! Rebecca was unable to comprehend what had just happened. It was impossible for this to happen. Her mate was Phoenix Marshall, the pack alpha and the wandering nomad biker. He was also her mate. It is impossible for this to be taking place. Before now, she had never experienced emotions like these. She had no idea what to do because the situation was shockingly overwhelming and borderline terrifying. It was impossible to accomplish such a thing with this man. Despite the fact that he could not possibly be her mate, she still encircled her arms around his neck and pulled his body in close to hers. She could never get enough of the sensation of him pressing up against her. Rebecca felt an overwhelming desire to mate with him as soon as she caught a whiff of him, as if the wolf that lived inside of her had suddenly come to life. She'd decided long ago that she never wanted to engage in s****l activity. Because she lived with her parents, she had to get used to the monotonous sounds of them doing it all the time, which was a challenge for her. They had been married at a young age and continued to have feelings for one another. That was the power that came from the two organisms mating together. When it seemed like it would never end, the kiss finally came to an end. When she looked directly into the eyes of Phoenix, it was as if her wolf had vanished into thin air. She understood the danger, the rage, and the animosity that was present. Even though Rebecca and the man in question had never met, it was abundantly clear that he harbored a deep-seated animosity toward her. Although Rebecca couldn't fathom how it was possible for him to feel such animosity toward her, the fact remained that he did. He despised her. Phoenix drew in his breath as he drew nearer to her, his lips coming dangerously close to her ear. "You'd better have had fun with that because that's the only thing you're going to get." I don't want a f*****g mate, and especially not someone like you. I don't even want a mate who f***s. You are not going to tell anyone about this, are you? If you tell anyone, I will f*****g kill you and your whole family, do you hear me?" The danger was not to be taken lightly. Rebecca was having a hard time believing what she was hearing, but at the same time, she just... knew. She had always been considerably larger than the other members of the pack for a significant portion of their time together. She had tried going on diets and even starving herself in an effort to achieve the goal weight that she had established for herself. Absolutely nothing that she tried ever turned out to be successful. Her mother and father despised the fact that she was constantly starving herself. "Most especially not someone like you," she replied. That could only point to one conclusion: he did not find her attractive in any way. He didn't have any interest in having s****l relations with the overweight woman. That brings us to the conclusion, doesn't it? Rebecca maintained her fixation on her companion and watched as he re-entered the establishment where they were drinking. Her cheeks were wet with tears, and she felt a stabbing pain right through the middle of her chest. She was completely incapable of reasoning. This had to be the most embarrassing sensation that could possibly exist in the entire world. "What takes place if the partners in a relationship decide they never want to be together again? If they are unable to tolerate one another, why do they live together? It was a question that she had posed to her parents a number of years ago while they were eating dinner together. They had shared a laughter between the two of them. "Oh, honey, you shouldn't worry about something like that happening. When you finally discover the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with, you won't want to part ways. You are solely concerned with being in their presence. There is no denying the magnetic pull that comes from your significant other. There is no way that can happen." Her potential partner did not want anything to do with her. He had a deep-seated animosity toward her. He was repulsed by her behavior and appearance. There is no way that anyone could ever discover the truth. After reaching her highest point during the transition, Rebecca immediately dropped to her lowest point when she discovered the intense secret. She could never tell anyone that she had found her mate or that her mate didn't want her. Either one of those things was out of the question.
