As the creature grew closer to the source of the scent, he noticed another creature, a fox, already advancing towards it. No doubt the fox had picked up the blood scent as well and was now advancing towards a black figure on the ground. Damien shifted to his human form and approached them, the fox on noticing him immediately scurried away into the woods, afraid. Damien continued to approach the figure on the ground and as he got closer he realized it was a woman, stabbed and slowly bleeding to death. He crouched down next to her. He sniffed the air, she was definitely not human so a werewolf. The slow rising and falling of her chest told Damien that she was still alive but not for long.
'The foxes will have a feast tonight, that's for sure', Damien thought to himself.
He stood up and turned around to leave when the small rustle of leaves caused him to stop. He turned around and the woman's eyes fluttered open slowly.
"He... Help me", the woman said so softly that Damien wouldn't have heard her if it hadn't been for his sharpened abilities.
Damien stared at the woman. She was alive but barely and the last thing Damien was was a hero so he turned around and began to walk away.
"Please...", the woman pleaded but Damien didn't stop.
"Pl... Please... I.... I want to live"
Damien stopped walking.
He turned around and looked at her. Her eyes were struggling to stay open as she looked at him pleadingly. He sighed and slowly retraced his steps back to her. By the time he crouched down next to her, her eyes had already fluttered shut but she was still breathing. Damien carefully picked her up and began to walk home.
As the sun rays filtered into the room, Danielle's eyes fluttered open. The first thing she noticed was the bed she was lying on. It was really soft and very big, she struggled to sit up but a sharp pain shooting from her abdomen forced her to lie still. The pain also reminded her of the memories of the previous day, of Colin's betrayal. She couldn't believe he had actually tried to kill her. She should have listened to her council members when they had refused to accept Colin. She should have listened to Terrius when he had warned her against Colin because of his rogue wolf blood.
Terrius. What would happen to Terrius? Would he simply believe whatever story Colin told them about her death?
Danielle remembered Colin's plan to bring in the rogues. Would Terrius be safe? Danielle knew Colin disliked Terrius because of how much he was against him. Would her pack be safe? And where was she anyway?
She slowly looked around the room. The room was large and luxuriously furnished. She tried to remember how she had ended up here but her memory was fuzzy. Just then the door opened and a young woman in a servant uniform walked in carrying a bowl. The woman stopped when she noticed Danielle staring at her.
"Oh you're awake my lady?", the woman asked as she hurriedly walked towards her bedside.
Danielle didn't say anything in response.
"How are you feeling? Are you in pain?", the young woman asked, smiling at her.
Seeing her smiling at her, Danielle thought her harmless.
"Um... No", she answered.
"That's good", the servant answered.
"Um, where am I?", Danielle asked.
"I'll go get the doctor, you should see the doctor first before anything", the servant said as she dropped the bowl on the bedside table and turned around to leave.
"But..", Danielle couldn't say anything else because the servant was already out the door.
A few moments later and the door opened, the servant from earlier came in behind her were two men. The first man was stout and short and the stethoscope on his neck told Danielle that he was the doctor. It was the second man however that made Danielle's breath hitch in her throat and held her attention. From how he was towering above the other two, Danielle could guess he was at least 6ft tall, he walked in confident fluid movements, the curls in his short black hair moving smoothly. His deep set eyes stared back at her with no emotions and his mouth was set in a down turned position. His angular face, cleft chin, hooked nose and arched eyebrows gave him a sort of roguish charm that was pulling her in strongly.
The servant stood at the side of her bed as the doctor came up to her, the tall stranger however leaned back on the edge of the bed watching her.
"Do you feel any pain?", the doctor asked Danielle and it took a conscious effort for her to pull her thoughts away from the handsome stranger to answer his question.
"Um, no, not really. Only when I try to sit up or move"
"Hm, that's understandable. The blade went in pretty deep, it was only by a miracle you survived and you were lucky the blade barely missed your vital organs", the doctor told her and she winced at his words.
She remembered Colin's murderous gaze, he had really wanted to kill her and he would have succeeded. But who saved her? How did she end up here? Her eyes wandered to the man leaning at the edge of the bed, he seemed familiar to her.
"I'll check the wound now", the doctor said and Danielle nodded.
The room was silent as the doctor checked on the wound.
"It should heal up well. I would advise not moving unnecessarily and putting pressure on it", the doctor said.
"Thank you", Danielle nodded.
"Then I'll take my leave now", he said as he turned around and bowed to the man leaning at the edge of the bed.
The man nodded at him and the doctor left.
She stared at him curiously. He caught her stare and looked at the servant, nodding at her. The servant bowed as well, then left leaving them alone.
The silence in the room was thick and stifling.
"Where am I?", Danielle asked finally, breaking the silence.
"It doesn't matter, you can leave once you've healed up", the man spoke in a low monotone.
Danielle started.
"Leave? But.. but I have nowhere to go", she said thinking of Colin's plan to become Alpha of her pack.
The man stared at her for a few seconds.
"That's your problem, isn't it?", he said as he turned around to leave.
It was then Danielle realized why he felt familiar, he was the one who had saved her last night. She remembered seeing someone's back as they walked away and it was him. He was going to leave her for dead and now he was essentially throwing her out again, was he that cruel?
"Why did you save me?", Danielle asked before he could leave.
Damien stopped for a few seconds then opened the door and left without a word, leaving Danielle alone in the silence.
