A Beige Coat
The sky was dark, the night cold. The rain had just stopped leaving behind puddles and drenched surroundings as a mark of it. A man in a beige overcoat drenched from head to toe as going downhill. One look at him and you can tell he was going back home from work. He was emanating a eerie and dispirited aura. His shoulders slumped, head tilted down and feets dragging on the wet concrete didn't seem like he was okay. He reached a*****e in the alleyway on his way home to dry his head and get something to eat. Inside, while he was buying himself some instant noodles, his eyes came upon a poster of new zoo opening in the city. The employee on the cashier counter noticing his gaze gave him some information about the offer on the opening day. He had drifted off and was dazed thinking about the diverse and colourful animals he would spectate if he went there but also was saddened thinking about the caged creatures. He then imagined them in their habitat and the freedom that comes with it. There was a desire to live as them and as the idea of it once birthed in his mind, he was finding it more and seductive. He visualized himself with animals in a jungle off-going everything. Just him and his animal companions, sleeping under the sky, eating what the nature provides and much much more. The idea of this kind of unfettered freedom fascinated him and he chuckled as he thought of him being like the fictional character Tarzan. As he got back home, showered and made himself a coffee he was still stuck with the same thoughts. He made himself comfortable on the couch, took out his trumpet and started blowing out a tune which sounded vibrant and full of life. It was almost a reflection of his emotions. As the fireplace shone light in the room, you could see a lone man grooving and enjoying himself. The picture that he portrayed was kind of endearing. The next morning he woke up as the rays of sunlight hit his face. He found himself on the couch. He had aches all over his body kind of reminding him that he was alive. He squinted his eyes to adjust to the morning light. He looked at the windowsill where the light was shining through. As he adjusted to the light he saw bird which looked like sparrow but was actually a tree pippet. As he went about his morning routine of showering and getting himself ready for the day, he was lost his thoughts from the impossible dream his. The dream to live like that and then he thought about his current life. He was again made aware that it was just a unrealistic ideal for him. A few days after that a friend from work had knocked on his door as he was not at work for days and there was no news at all. He tried to twist the door handle and suprisingly it was unlocked. He went in and saw a pair of legs hanging. As his gaze travelled up he made sense of the reality. The man had hung himself. He was dressed in his favourite beige coat that he was wearing on that rainy day.
