FIRST DAY
“Miss Black, welcome.” A woman in her mid thirties greeted Katerina as she entered the office.
The woman wore a modest skirt and white top and had quite a motherly smile to her.
‘Human.’ Her wolf, Calathea, said in her head as she caught a whiff of the woman’s scent. ‘I thought this company was owned by a wolf?’ Her wolf asked as Katerina gave the woman a smile.
“It’s a pleasure to be here, Mrs. Morrison.” Katerina said as she ignored her nagging wolf. “I’m so thankful you accepted my application.”
“The company was very impressed with your story on how you lost your family at a young age and have been doing your best not only to support yourself but your younger relatives too.” Mrs. Morrison said as she gave Katerina a sweet smile.
“I just felt the need to step up.” Katerina replied as simply as she could.
‘Also because we didn’t have a choice because our nature drove us to -” Calathea began to say before Katerina scolded her.
‘Let me get through today peacefully first. Please Calathea.’ Katerina begged her wolf.
‘Fine.’ Calathea responded before she finally receded to Katerina’s mind.
Katerina couldn’t help but feel relieved as her wolf went silent. She knew most people would judge her for that thought. A wolf was meant to make you feel complete, to make you better, but ever since the incident that took her family from her Katerina couldn’t stand her wolf.
“Why don’t I show you around, then later you can join us when we present our plans and performance to the CEO?” Mrs. Morrison said as she led Katerina around the office. “Our team often works with the CEO, so the earlier you get exposed to his errr. . . odd mannerisms the better it will be for you.”
“Odd mannerisms?” Katerina asked as she gave the woman before her a confused look.
“Well, you’ll see it for yourself later but I guess there is no harm in telling you now.” Mrs. Morrison said as she looked around and bit her lip. “I mean everyone knows about them, I guess it would not be bad to tell you.”
Katerina gave the woman a smile as she patiently waited for her to speak.
When Mrs. Morrison was sure that no one was within earshot, she gestured for Katerina to move closer to her so that she could whisper.
“Sometimes he just vanishes, not physically, but mentally.” Mrs. Morrison whispered to Katerina as her eyes darted around, checking if anyone was in her vicinity.
‘Probably speaking to his wolf.’ Calathea commented in Katerina’s head.
Katerina couldn’t help but agree. That was probably why the CEO seemed to be out of it at times, Katerina personally knew how much practice it took to seem like you were listening while having a separate conversation in your head.
‘He’s probably never needed to hide the fact that he was talking to his wolf, unlike us.’ Katerina said in a sad tone.
“That’s it?” Katerina asked. “What if he was just tired? I mean aren’t CEOs often exhausted due to all the work they have to do?”
Katerina tried her best to play innocent. This company may be owned by a wolf, but there was no telling how many humans were working here.
The person from Human Resources that had interviewed her was definitely a wolf, she could smell the slutty she-wolf from miles away.
‘Probably one of the CEO’s playthings.’ Calathea scoffed in her head.
Katerina knew that her wolf couldn’t help feeling all high and mighty, it was in her nature, in her blood to be that way. For wolves it was harder to deny their instincts than for humans, that’s why the mate bond was always stronger for wolves.
The other employee that Katerina had met was the Vice President for Marketing, he had a ranked wolf’s aura, which was odd to Katerina. From what she knew, the CEO of the company was a rogue.
He found it amusing when she was shocked but didn’t even mention it after. She also couldn’t help but notice that he was checking her out. Maybe he would ask her out for coffee one of these days, who knew.
“Well, sometimes, the CEO growls at people.” Mrs. Morrison said as she looked embarrassed, probably because she had been told in the past.
“Growls? You’re joking right? People don’t growl.” Katerina said with a light and nervous laugh. Humans didn’t growl, but wolves sure did, especially when they were angry.
“That’s the same thing my husband told me, but last month when we had our annual reports he was furious and I swear I heard a growl.” Mrs. Morrison said, quite embarrassed by what she had said.
Katerina couldn’t help but feel bad for the poor woman, it was normal for humans that interacted with wolves regularly to seem crazy to the people they lived with.
“I will see for myself then, Mrs. Morrison.” Katerina said with a kind smile.
‘You are being too kind.’ Calathea scolded in a stern tone, her wolf not liking the kindness Katerina was showing the woman. ‘Stop giving her hope, the sooner she dismisses it as her imagination the better it will be for her, you know this.’
Katerina chose to ignore her wolf as she kept her attention on Mrs. Morrison.
“You don’t have to be kind to me, Katerina.” Mrs. Morrison said as she shook her head. “I know I sound crazy.”
Katerina frowned at the elder woman’s words. It was quite sad to hear that Mrs. Morrison had given up on sounding sane.
“The CEO may also try to errr. . .” This time, to Katerina’s surprise, Mrs. Morrison hesitated to continue her sentence.
“Try to?” Katerina asked as she tried to pry the information from Mr.s Morrison.
“He might try to sniff you.” Mrs. Morrison said as she seemingly sounded embarrassed. “When I first met him I swear he tried to smell me. It was odd.”
Katerina couldn’t help but laugh.
To Mrs. Morrison it seemed like Katerina found her story ridiculous, but in Katerina’s head, she couldn’t help but compare it to how she had picked up Mrs. Morrison’s scent earlier.
‘This CEO wolf sounds like he doesn’t even care if our kind is discovered.’ Calathea scoffed.
‘He is a rogue, he doesn’t believe in our rules.’ Katerina told her wolf with a sigh.
“Look, Katerina, I know it sounds silly, but you asked.” Mrs. Morrison explained, to which Katerina simply smiled.
Mrs. Morrison took a deep breath and shook her head, she knew that Katerina didn’t completely believe her.
“Let me introduce you to the rest of the team then we can go over to the VP to say hi.” Mrs. Morrison told Katerina as she led her to the Marketing Department’s area.
