Chapter 1
Sasha “Look at you, standing comfortable in a kitchen where you don't belong.” I didn't need to turn my face to know who was speaking, I recognized the voice. Amelia, the Alpha's sister. The sizzling sound of the frying pan replaced the silence that came after her words. I turned back to look at Amelia who was staring at me with her face filled with venom. She'd always remind me everyday that I don't belong in the pack house, and not in her brother's kitchen. But what was I to do when the moon goddess had chosen me as the Alpha's wife? The mark was here, proof that I'll be his Luna. But his sister doesn't like me, and she hates seeing me around. “You act like you own this place and I hate that guts of yours!” Amelia stepped forward and crossed her arms under her breasts. “I'm just trying to cook a meal for the Alpha, Amelia” I said calmly. Amelia laughed. “I forgot that's what pathetic people like you do” My throat tightened but I swallowed my words and only let her continue ranting. “Don't forget my brother didn't choose you because he wanted to,” she reminded. “It's because the moon goddess’s taste in choosing a mate for him was just too poor” “Enough, Amelia” Someone's sharp voice cut through. “Before this becomes a report I give to the Alpha” I snapped my face to see my sister, Sabrina. Sabrina stormed to us, standing tall in front of Amelia whose face was twisted in anger. Amelia's jaws clenched as she stared at my sister. “And you think my brother will punish me for a wench like her?” “Whatever!” She added, storming out of the kitchen. “f**k you both!” When she was gone, I released the breath I had been holding and rested my back against the kitchen counter, my hand gripping the edges tightly to steady myself. Sometimes, I agree with Amelia. This place is not for a low omega like me and I shouldn't have been chosen as the Alpha's mate. Hands suddenly dropped on my shoulder and I realized I had forgotten Sabrina's presence. “She don't get to decide your place here, Sasha” Sabrina consoled. “You were chosen for this, and the moon goddess is not dumb” “You'll be the Luna, even Amelia can't change that,” Sabrina added. Tears blurred my vision and I wondered what I'd do without her. I hugged Sabrina in a moment of urgency and cried in her arms. “I'm scared, Sabrina,” I cried. When I talk about being scared, I mean Amelia’s constant attacks, the way everyone in the packhouse stares at me whenever I walk by, the way the people whisper words behind my back, all because I've been chosen to be Luna. Sabrina caressed my back and hugged me tighter. She didn't say anything, she just allowed me to cry. I liked her for that, she never told me to hold it in, she'd always tell me to cry whenever I needed to. After a few minutes, she broke the hug and held my shoulder. “Don't be scared, Sash. As long as I'm here, no one will hurt you” My gloomy face lit up with a smile. She's right, as long as she's here, I can face anything. Sabrina isn't my blood sister, but I've grown to relax in her embrace, warm touch and encouraging words. When I lost my parents at fourteen, Sabrina appeared out of the blue like a fallen angel that had been sent to be my backbone. She's an omega just like me, but is respected by the society and not scorned. She took me in and took care of me. We became sisters, inseparable. “Thank you, Sabrina” I nodded with a reassuring smile and the smell of the burning pancake omelet made me turn away from her. “It's burning,” she laughed. “I know right?” I laughed too. “The alpha can't eat this, I made it specially for him” My face turned gloomy again, my lips turning into a pout. “The mating ceremony is tomorrow” she placed her hand on my shoulder again. “You can always make him anything after that” Sabrina is my safe place. She always has a way of making me feel good with her words whenever I'm down, and I'm always grateful to have her by my side. “You are right, but I will make this again” I smiled widely. “I will leave it to you then, I hope the Alpha likes it” she walked away, a huge smile on her face. Getting chosen as the Alpha's consort happened out of the blue. It was so sudden and unexpected that it made me lock myself up for a whole day just to process things. They call me a nobody, so how was an omega like me supposed to rule the pack as the Luna? I poured the pancake into the bin and made it again. This time, I avoided all sorts of distractions and focused on the meal until it was done. I poured my heart into serving the meal and matched it with a fruit juice, placing them both on the dining table. The alpha had left for a meeting hours ago and should be back soon. I waited patiently while I sat down on a chair, looking out for his arrival. Will he be coming? Will he like it? My chest tightened as every second passed by and finally, the doorknob turned. A wave of excitement crashed into me and I stood up immediately, ready to welcome the alpha. The excitement on my face disappeared when Amelia walked in, instead of Alpha Damien. Her face landed on me first before she looked at the dining table settings. She scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Wasting your f*****g time” She walked upstairs and I dropped back to the chair in disappointment, dragging in a deep breath. Why is he late? Why is he not here yet? For six months, I've lived in the packhouse. Yes, it's been six months since I've gotten chosen as Damien's mate, but we’ve barely seen each other even though we live together. I just wanted to do something for him. An hour passed before the doorknob was touched again and this time, the Alpha entered. I stood up and greeted him. “Welcome, Alpha Damien” He didn't respond. He walked towards the staircase but stopped when he saw the dining table. “What's all these?” He asked. “I made pancake omelets for you” The alpha walked to the dining table and his gaze lingered on the plate for a second before he touched it, his hand devoid of hesitation as he tipped the plate over to the ground. I gasped, my eyes widened in shock, lips trembling in disbelief. I watched the meal I had prepared with extra care on the ground, ridiculed. “You should know your place, Sasha.” He said, voice cold and ruthless. Why? Why did he do that? Words suddenly got caught in my throat and I found myself unable to utter anything until he vanished up the stairs. A hysteric laugh erupted from upstairs and I snapped my face to look. Amelia was standing on the landing, watching from the railing with a smug smile on her face. “Serves you right” She left right after, and I dropped to the floor, the feeling of despair washing over me. Had I thought my miserable days were over? No, they weren't. This looks just like the beginning. Finally, I understood I didn't belong here, not at all.
