chapter 1
CHAPTER 1
I dragged myself out of bed at the sound of my alarm groaning at the fact that it's Monday once again .
I went downstairs and saw Mrs Ammerson (who has been like a parent and friend to me. I've known her for 6 years and I'm happy we met) downstairs playing my breakfast .
I walked up to her and kissed her cheek
“Morning” I murmured and she just rolled her eyes at me while I grabbed my coffee cup from the table and took a sip happy with the caffeine boost
“ You have a mail” Mrs Ammerson said handing me an envelope and going to sit on the couch to continue her crocheting
“A mail! What am I? 80?” I said with a scoff while Mrs Ammerson glared at me
“ Okay fine, don't get me wrong you know I only get electronic nails not this type of mail. Who is this old fashioned hag by the way?” I asked finally taking a bite of my toast making Mrs Ammerson roll her eyes at my antics
“ Open the f*****g envelope you i***t and see for yourself” She said not even look at me and I gasped feigning offence at her cussing making her snicker .
I scarfed down the rest of my meal and opened the envelope to see a cheque of 20 million dollars
“The f**k!” I shouted in surprise
“A whooping 20 million dollars what the actual f**k? is this real?” I said pinching myself
“WE ARE GOING TO BE RICH!!” I shouted with a smile Mrs Ammerson smiled
“Shouldn't you check the note?”
“How did you know there is a note?” I asked as I pulled out a paper from the envelope
“ Well I don't receive emails since I'm an old hag” she replied, glaring at me making me laugh.
Miss Adeline Rosewater I'm sure you have seen the cheque by now your presence is required at the Caster Enterprise
10:00 am
Not a minute later.
I showed the note to Mrs Ammerson and she collected it from my hands, equally curious. After reading it she looked at the time on the wall clock and smiled warmly at me. The note just confused me and the only way to find out what the whole check was was to go there.
“OMG Adeline!” Mrs Ammerson shouted
“It's the Caster Enterprise!!” She shouted
Well you see Caster Enterprise is one of the biggest companies here in New York and they have subsidiary companies around the world as well as other branches. Getting mail from them is a big deal. Although the face of the Company is the COO not the CEO, no one knows anything about the CEO, not even his name.
“I'm freaking out” I squealed, matching Mrs Ammerson’s spirit and hugged her before running up the stairs to prepare. It was 8:27 so I had barely 2 hours to prepare and reach there and since I don't live in New York City but at the outskirts which is like 20 minutes away in Ridgewood.
I entered my bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my hair and showered. Coming out of the bathroom and wrapping a towel around my head and another around my body I unplugged my phone from where I had plugged it in last night and called in sick at my workplace which is also in New York. I worked at a restaurant as a manager. It isn't a very big restaurant but my salary is really good.
I pulled out a white button up shirt with a short pink buttoned commuter plaid vest and white suit pants. I applied some lip gloss and mascara. As for my brown hair I styled it in a loose bun. I grabbed my white channel bag,put on my jewelries and put on my white stiletto heels.
I grabbed my phone, lipgloss, gum and my other essentials and stuffed them into my bag. I gave myself a once over in the mirror and walked out of my room satisfied with my look.
As I walked downstairs Mrs Ammerson whistled making me laugh
“Damn you look hot” she said standing up making me laugh again
“Damn give me a 360” she said and I did making her whistle again while I laughed at her antics
“Girrrrl you have a really nice shape you look beautiful as always don't let anyone tell you otherwise” she said giving me a kiss on the cheek.
“Thanks mama” I replied with a smile, hugging her
“You should take the envelope and cheque with you and can use the opportunity to check if the cheque is real” she said smiling warmly at me while putting the cheque and note into the envelope that had ADELINE written boldly on it.
I took the envelope and put it into my bag, grabbing my car keys and house key from the centre table. I left the house and climbed into my 2020 white Nissan Versa and drove off waving to Mrs Ammerson as she came outside to watch me drive off as she usually did. It warms my heart that she never failed to see me off even if I was just going to the mall.
✨✨✨
Reaching Caster Enterprise with the name C.E and its logo sitting boldly on the huge building.
I checked the time on my phone and saw that it was 9:47 am meaning I had 13 minutes left. I parked my car and stepped out into the building strutting in like I owned the place like my mama (Mrs Ammerson) always said I should always walk with confidence.
The office did not announce its wealth loudly; it assumed it. Light poured in through tall windows, diffused by sheer glass walls that softened the space without closing it off. The ceilings were high, the air cool and faintly scented with polished wood and clean linen, as if the building itself were carefully groomed each morning.
The floors were wide-plank oak, muted and matte, absorbing sound so that footsteps passed like whispers. Desks sat in deliberate alignment—broad, uncluttered surfaces of pale wood and brushed metal, their cables hidden, their screens dark until touched. Chairs curved to the body without drawing attention to themselves, designed for long hours without discomfort.
Stopping in front of the receptionist I greeted her with a smile which she returned
“Welcome miss Rosewater, the entire staff was notified of your presence today, come with me” she said smiling softly speaking before I could say anything. I was shocked at the information she just gave me which didn't go unnoticed by her as she chuckled softly.
We stopped at an elevator which she opened with her ID and she gestured for me to go in then she bowed softly as she stood outside which surprised me
“Aren't you coming in?”
“No mam, just press the 54th floor” she replied while I nodded and stepped in.
I didn't notice the normal buttons on the elevator, instead a touchscreen keypad came in and I typed on the 54th floor and it started moving.
“Welcome Miss Rosewater” I heard immediately the elevators doors opened and I screamed in shock and moved back
“What the f**k” I muttered and glared at the guy
“My apologies I was asked to welcome you as you step out I didn't mean to scare you” he replied making me roll my eyes as he bowed
“It’s fine where am I to go?” I asked and he nodded
“It's this way” he said and I nodded while walking behind him,my heels clicking on the beautiful marble floors, trying not to look around too much so I wouldn't grab more attention from the other workers.
We stopped at a glass automatic door which he used his ID to open and he stopped.
“What now?” I asked annoyed with the whole ‘royalty’ drama
“The COO would see you once you enter” he replied, bowed and left making me roll my eyes
I stepped in before the doors could close and I realized that here was more silent than the other side although outside wasn't noisy it was so quiet either.
Meeting rooms were enclosed in glass that dimmed at the press of a finger, turning transparent collaboration into private focus. Inside, a single stone table anchored the room, surrounded by leather chairs and a wall-length display that glowed softly when in use. Nothing hummed or clicked unnecessarily; technology lived quietly beneath the surface.
Along the edges of the floor, lounges replaced waiting areas. Low sofas, textured fabric, and carefully chosen art gave the impression of a private gallery rather than a workplace. Coffee machines stood on stone counters, gleaming but understated, the kind that promised excellence without instruction.
Plants rose from corners and divided spaces naturally, their green breaking the discipline of lines and glass. No space felt rushed or accidental. The office carried the confidence of people who expected to do important work there—and had already done so many times before.
I walked into the meeting room which opened before I could touch it, which surprised me because so far I noticed that the company has tight security.
Sitting at the end of the table was a man with black hair gelled back, black eyes that looked empty wearing a black tailored suit that fit his probably 6 '3 frame and his shirt hugged him in all the right places, he was packed that I could tell. Without even saying a word he exuded power. I finally moved my eyes back to his face and noticed him smirking at me which made my cheeks heat up at getting caught ogling him.
I heard a throat clear which made me notice the other man, equally as hot but with blue eyes and probably 6 ‘1 which made me flush again. I recognized this one as the COO
“You can sit Miss Rosewater, we have been waiting for you”
The COO said and I nodded and sat down at the opposite end.
